Gauls Guide for Travian
Primarily a guide on self-resource production and how Gauls can improve their gaming.
Overview
This is just a guide I decided to make; any additional info from more experienced players will be welcome and included in guide if I think it is needed. This will be primarily a guide focusing on primarily self-resource production and being too much trouble to raid. Any info from raiders on how Gauls can improve their being a nuisance will be helpful, just go with the thought of how many will read this and be your problem.
Why?
Gauls are said to be a defensive race, and it is true their basic unit is primarily defensive in use and they need more resources to start raiding. While they still aren’t very good at raiding when they get the minimum of 3 phalanx due to small carry capacity, they excel at being too much trouble themselves to be raided in the beginning; while Teutons are raiding and Romans being raided, you are sitting behind a wall of pitfalls laughing at the raiders falling in and Romans getting ground to dust. Also one of your later units is said to be the best raider in the game: the Theutates Thunder (TT) which is the fastest unit in the game. Your merchants are also the fastest of them all, meaning in the market other players will see your offers first, and you get resources out faster to allies. So this is why Gauls are by far the best ones, so you Teutons, have fun while it lasts, and Romans, so sorry you are Romans.
The Beginning
So I assume you’ve just picked Gauls and are lost with what to do with your current resources. First thing you should probably do is invest in the resource fields so your have good production for future expansion. Upgrade one or two grain fields then invest in clay wood and iron so maybe with a up2 wheat, 2 clay, 1 wood, and iron as last since you don’t need much right now. That (correct me if I’m wrong and ill edit) should just about deplete your resources if anythings left put it in a lvl 1 or 2 cranny, remember yours hold twice as much so nearby raiders will be disappointed when you get out for now just up fields and cranny and get a lvl 1 trapper when you get a few extra resources and save up for those first 10 traps to make raiders mad.
Oh, No
So there something in your nice little hole pouting about being caught, eh? Well not to worry, you can be a nice (or smart if the guys 100+ pop compared to you, or noticebly larger teuton) and release the poor fellow, or you can be the little kidnapper and ransom him back. If its romans you will probly get a fare price for a couple of them because there very expensive so the guy will probly spare a fare amount; with teutons its hard to tell, they might have a lot because they’ve raided everyone near them dry, but their units are fairly cheap, so they may just kill them off and build more, so maybe try to get ransom but don’t wait too long. When you release you only lose half of the traps occupied but when they come and rescue them then they destroy 2/3 of the traps so be smart and use your own judgement. With experience comes wisdom, with wisdom comes good things. Remember, you can only get 1 hour of production in ransom so maybe just a few at a time for it.
First Few Days Out of Protection
So your now out of protection, eh? Well, expect changes. That Teuton over there with the 60 pop and 50 macemen has been wanting a bit of fresh meat, and that Roman who survived him is seeing a possible target. No worries for WE ARE GAULS, and we make it a hobby to disappoint them this early in the game. If you’ve had maybe 5 days of protection you may have all lvl 2 resource fields a lvl 10 cranny and at least a lvl 1 trapper and 10 traps. Now its time to start a military you want a lvl 1 rally point and lvl 3 main building, then its time for barracks. You should start upping trapper and getting a warehouse and granary if you haven’t already, once you main building 3 and you have rally point, build barracks. After it’s built, don’t get a military yet.
First we need to show those two local power houses we’re not worth it, so get another lvl 10 cranny and some more traps. Now that they’re trying to farm you a important rule is…BE NICE…yes, it’s astounding, but worst thing to do is be mean. In most posts about being a farm, many farmers say they stop if asked, and some will let you grow some and raid less. Occasionally it even gets you a good alliance from the farmer. So just be nice and it normally benefits you; I know, shocking, nobody else believes at first either. So, just be a diplomat and act nice and polite even if they don’t. If you have multiple superpowers around you, they may even help.
So You Got a Stable Economy and Sent Those Jealous Guys Packing?
Great, now you can start building a small military and upping your economy. You should also start shopping for an alliance, maybe even one that one of those farmers is in? Well, first save up and get 3 phalanxes for you need that many to successfully raid an undefended village. If you’ve been watching, you should know which of those other guys are inactive and safe to raid. If your not sure that you’ll get anything just don’t try to raid with phalanxes at all. But if you think you can, just slip in and try to get some resources before the big farmers do, simple as that, just sneak in and get some. As your building up get an embassy and leave it at level one; thats all you need for a alliance. Don’t forget those fields, we’re not Teutons, or even as good as Romans with negative wheat, so make sure to keep it positive. Now that your resource production is up, you can trade your excess on the market. The best trades are often 1:1, or even trades, but often you can get almost as much as twice the amount your selling with patience, but putting the trades pretty close in amounts is often the quickest to sell.
Now just keep upping your fields and getting other buildings as you go. As you start getting maybe 60/hour resources maybe start upping your barracks to lvl 3 for the academy so you can start on your way to the much better raider: Swordsman. You’ll need a blacksmith, too, which you get at lvl 3 academy, so get it to lvl 3 and get the blacksmith. By now I’m guessing your fields are fairly improved, about lvl 4 or 5 for resources and 5+ wheat, and you can save up for the cost to research the swordsman. Also after you build swordsman send a few phalanx with them, it adds more carry capacity, which means quicker profit.
Note: This is one-time research cost, not the unit cost. It will allow you to forever more make the swordsman in this village.
So after you’ve got a few swordsman and are becoming competition for those other two give yourself a pat, you’ve gotten far. So from here I’ll just give a basic outline of goals you could have.
Long-term Goals
You should get TT’s as soon as is possible for you, since this allows for extended distance raiding due to the 19 field/hour pace. Also it is not suggested making your primary village a capital since you will want either a 9-cropper or better yet a 15-cropper as your capital for high level wheat fields and thus larger army support. In a 15-cropper with lvl 19 fields and lvl 5 bakery and mill you can have 45,000 wheat production, and with luck maybe have some oasis that can raise that even further. Also, think about what your first hero will be. Will it be a raiding hero like a TT, or a defensive one like Druidrider? Also, don’t forget to get regen on first level. A good set up for first few levels is 3 attack/defense and 2 regen. As you may have figured out, getting more villages is also a very good goal. Gauls even have cheaper Settlers than the other tribes, although they are still very expensive.

nice guide thanks!
Cool guide. Thanks:D
good stuff, Gauls kick ass!
It is a good guide for those who are new to the game, but offense for gauls is a hell of a lot faster for growth. You can get TTs in the first 3 – 5 days out of protection, so look out for an offensive guide.
Great guide!
Gauls OWN!
i got a question. the guild said to build capital on a 9 or 15 cropper. However, in order to get a 9 or 15 cropper a palace must already be built to get settlers =/
You can make a new village by making settlers in indeed a palace OR a residence. You should always make a residence in your first village cause it is your capital anyway.
Once you got a 9/15 cropper (prolly second or third village) you build a palace there and then you can make that your capital.
great guide soooooooooo helpful
i don’t have an option to builda palace what should i do?
I honestly have to say.. as an experienced gaul, this is not a good guide to follow. Swords should never be researched until your hammer village is up, and any decent gaul has TTs by day 3-5.
I will however, be sending this to all of my gaul farms. I would love for them to play this way.
This guide is one of the oldest guides on Gauls. And it is designed for beginners to the game.
But as you play and gain experience, you are to adapt and play your own unique style
I got like 15 teutons in my 7×7 . All of them raids me . So , i just build more traps and stack with 100 phalanx . thats all it needs to kill all of their raiders ! Some of them had deleted their account because i`ve been raiding them as soon as i get my TT!
Gaul rocks !
