How to Set Up the R4ds
A tutorial on how to set up the R4DS.
What you will need:
- 1x R4 DS cartridge (where you put the micro SD card into).
- 1x Micro SD card (can be up to 4GB)
- 1x Micro SD card reader (comes with the R4).
Step 1:
Go to R4ds.cn and download version the latest firmware available. insert your micro SD card into the micro SD card reader that came with your R4DS then plug into the computer. Simply drag and drop ALL of the files included onto the micro SD card.
Step 2:
Then drag and drop any .nds file onto the micro SD card reader or an mp3 file if you want to test it out on either music or a game. For legal issues I cannot supply you with a website on how to get yourself any roms.
Step 3:
Safely remove the micro SD card reader from your computer and then take out the micro SD card. Slot your micro SD card into the R4DS cartridge and then put it into the Nintendo DS.
Step 4:
Turn on your Nintendo DS and it will load up the menu screen. If you put an mp3 file onto the card go into multimedia if you are loading up an .nds file go into games. The other option you can choose is for loading slot 2 devices a.k.a GBA games.
Step 5:
Now find your game/MP3 and play it. Viola! You have a full working R4DS!
You can buy an R4DS from a lot of places on the Internet. For links on where to buy an R4DS go here and look in the “Where to Buy” section.
How do you know if your R4DS is broken?
- If the loading screen takes more than 30 seconds to load
- If your micro SD will not fit into the R4DS
- If your R4DS will not play any roms
- If the firmware does not work try re-downloading
Note: If your micro SD does not fit in properly but you can still get it into the R4DS your spring has been broken. This is a really known problem that unfortunately can’t be fixed and happens to most R4DS’s
IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WHERE THE LOADING SCREEN DOESNT LOAD IT MIGHT BE THAT YOU HAVE DOWNLOAD A FAKE FIRMWARE FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE. ONLY DOWNLOAD THE FIRMWARE FROM www.r4ds.cn!!!!
What Comes With The R4 Package:
- 1xR4DS cartridge
- 1xR4DS cartridge holder
- 1xR4DS firmware CD (Has older version of firmware on it)
- 1xMicro SD card reader
A micro SD card is not included in the pack. However most websites that are offering R4DS’s have combos that include a micro SD card but for a higher price than normal.

When You Download That firmware it is a windows media file, and when you double click on it, it says it has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.

Do I need to upgrade my firmware? I’ve noticed there is a newer version on the R4 website.
We have 4 ds lites in our family and I have an R4. Have been using it for a while, but found it stopped booting up occasionally. When this happened, standard cards would not boot either. Eventually, no cards will boot now, and it has happened on all the ds lites we have !!! They are meant to be passive, but I’m not convinced. Has anyone else had these problems, and managed to fix it?

I think the game developer keep coming up with new method to block the game being played on R4. So you need to go to r4ds.com to download the latest firmware. I think it is ver 1.18 now

yes knights its illegal to download games for ur r4 but they can be used as a backup for games / music / movies that you already own. to get it working copy the system files from http://www.r4ds.com its v1.18. then just click and drag any nds files onto your sd card. personally i name a folder nds and use this for games and another dgp for movies (as this is the type of file for movies). i always find that a quick look on utube will help with most problems.
My problem is that i cant seem to use a 4gb sd card.the r4 works on a 1 & 2 gb sd card but wont work on anything bigger. was wondering if anyone could help. i also have a m3ds real and this supports up to 8gb. thanks

thanks Ah yes, have tried everything and couldn’t understand where i was going wrong. and again for anyone else if you are having any problems with the r4 google youtube and simply enter R4DS. the videos are very helpful. for ds games try romsite.net (u can only download 80mb per day, probably get a couple of games), or download from a torrent site (this is the best method as u can download loads at the same time – i used utorrent and typed in ds roms).
was also wondering if the r4ds version 2 (r4ds revolution) supports the larger sd cards as this is what i have.

I have bought the R4 card and the microsd card reader (USB) was included. . i have also received a scandisk microsd 2gb memory card.
when i put the card into the usb reader, it installs the drivers and the properties are saying it is working correct… but when i open my computer and click the icon to open the memory card it says please insert a disk into removable disk (F:) i have vista..
i have been looking at forums on the internet and it seems quite a few people have this problem but noone has resovled it. there are alot of people guessing how to resolve but none work..
has anyone had this problem and how was it resolved. .

Hi I have just bought 2 r4ds’s and I am having the same problem LOADING….. it is the r4ds itself as I have tried an older cartridge which I have and even with the new sd card in and all of the software it works fine…so the problem lies with the newer r4ds cards.
I have got version 2 and i followed the link and downloaded v1.11 kernal download and then extracted it and put my r4 card in it just says could not finf menu data, why cant it find it?
You guys having trouble loading. You’ve probably got a high density sd card. You need a standard one. I think they come in up to 4g but maybe only 2. Be sure you’re getting a standard one or it won’t work in the R4. Alternatively, get a newer R4 and use whatever size card suits you. The newer ones say specifically that they have high density support (up to 32g or something like that). Also, you’re gonna want to put your roms in a different folder as gerryman suggested above. Some of them will either lock up, or not play at all in the main directory.
By the way, if you’re wondering, I just got the newer R4 because of this exact problem.
It kinda sucks that now I’ve got an old R4 that I’ve barely used because I didn’t know enough to look for the newer one. But who am I gonna complain to?????

I’m using a 2 GB Lexar micro SD card and everytime I try to load it up in the DS it either gives me a loading… screen and never loads or an error message that couldn’t find ds-menu.dat file. I’ve tried different versions of kernels and different methods but it still wont load. Any Advice???????

Hi all I have bought 4 r4ds and all work well, but I have just bought a r4 III upgrade card for a friends boy and transfered all my files from my r4ds and it won’t load just has a black screen and says loading, could somebody please explain to me simply what I have to do to fix it as I have no idea.

First delete all but the Games folder on your SDHC, then replace them with the files/folders in the zip file that you download. It will then work flawlessly.

Hello. I have an r4 III upgrade card and themes do not show only a purple screen with a box blinking. I am able to play all the games, but the theme is ugly. Does anyone know how I can fix this so I can add my own themes.

When i put my Micro SD card into the Micro SD card reader, any of the games I put on it do not come up on the games list. Do you know what is wrong?

if you have the R4 Revolution SDHC, try downloading the kernel from this site ‘http://www.ndslr4.com/soft/25-en.htm.’ the r4 sdhc requires a different kernel from the older versions. hope this helps

I had the Loading Screen error. I re-formatted and re-installed probably 30 times. I did all the logical updating and dragging and blaa blaa blaa. I finally sent an e-mail to the company I bought it from and the e-mailed me what appeared to be the same files I had already installed repeatedly. For whatever reason it worked and never messed up again… untill I had some new roms I installed and it would not play them. As soon as I tried to update files to newer version, I am now back to Loading screen lol.
Guys and Girls. Spent ages on this \”Loading…\” as I\’m sure all of you have. Turns out there is a R4DS fake. It\’s a N5DS Labeled as a R4DS.
Anyway, onto the solution. On the label it will say (most likely) **R4SDHC** This is key to finding the right Firmware. A quick google and hey presto. This will work even if you don\’t have a SDHC Memory Card inserted. People believe me I am glad to put this error to rest.

hellspeak R4 does not support 8GB micro sds only up to 4GB

My brother in law just purchased R4DS Upgrade. He has tried the 3.07 firmware and other firmwares. they don’t work, it doesn’t even recognize there is a card in the slot. just says that there is not a card

Right been having the same probs as most people on here with my R4sdhc but got it sorted now so thought I would post my wisdom
R4DS – Can only be used with a sd card upto 2gb
R4SDHC – Although it says upto 32gb I have found that whatever you put over 4gb will not show so no point buying over that size.
If you have the r4sdhc then download kernel 1.25 from http://www.ndslr4.com/download-en.htm
If you are using the R4ds then download kernel 1.21 or lower.
Download the relevant kernel and then extract it using winrar or similar. There should be 5 files which need to be transferred to an empty SD card.
When they are transferred eject the memory stick from the PC and put into your R4 cart and try on your DS. It should load with the themes (which can be changed by pressing select) but no games on there.
Now take out the cart and put the SD card back into the PC. Now transfer you games over to the card in the same directory as all the other files. I have tried setting up games folders but it stopped the games showing so by doing it this way they all show.
I had a nightmare sorting my card but now have a lovely 4gb card with over 70 games working perfectly so hope this guide helps and if not then just ask.

I was having the loading errors with a new R4SDHC card i bought and I tried all the kernels and firmwares listed here and the only one that worked for me was the one posted in comment number 60. Try that one and hopefully it will sort out your issues.

hi – i previously had an edge card for my ds which i had no problems with until the kids lost it – bought them each a ds for xmas so purchased 5 r4sdhc cards for them – i can not get these to work!!
I have downloaded the newest kernal, expanded it – saving the expanded bits on the card and ditching the unexpanded version – not worked. Have left both on the stick – still not worked!! have downloaded kernal 1.24 and 1.24 and 1.18!!! all i get is ‘loading’ when i put it into my ds! where am I going wrong???? i’m working on mac os x

For everyone having a loading screen try downloading the CHINESE version of the Kernel software. I had the same problem as you guys and I was tearing my hair out but tried the Chinese firmware as a last ditch effort and lo and behold it worked!

Try all the languages. I actually bought mine in Taiwan which led me to think I may need the chinese version but you may need a French, Spanish or some other one!

I think I have figured out your problem. It would seem as though 1.19 is a fake firmware… it will work fine on cloned R4 cards (like mine) and is the better firmware to have but it will not work on Real R4 cards (like yours).
This leads me to the conclusion that you should try the 1.18 official firmware (Chinese Language).

have the rdsdhc – which is apparently a fake?? (* or rather I have 6 of them – which is even more frustrating) either way I have downloaded pretty much every kernal on the r4ds site and still seeing ‘loading’.
I think the R4SDHC are up to 1.25! They are different firmwares to the oldschool R4 cards! Have you tried those yet (English and Chinese)?

Search Google for WINRAR… you need to install this program to your PC then you can right click on the file and extract the contents to your PC.

ok ive tried 1.21, 1.25 and even the random 3.07 one which was completely different to other kernals. I also have the sdhc and nothing works. Mine didnt come with a cd which is weird i thought. Another unusual thing was that instead of getting the usual endless loading screen, mine has a white screen with a picture of a micro sd card with a \\\’happy face\\\’ on it.. the it changes into a sad face and says \\\”menu?\\\”. Im guessing its the r4sdhc equivilent of the endless loading screen. Help me please.

To answer a lot of questions on this forum:
There are clones out there. If you have a clone, you need to get the appropriate kernel from the website on the box. The R4 kernel will not work with clones.
Can anyone confirm that the r4’s with sdhc are clones?

I had white screen & red menu, contacted supplier http://www.r4i.co.uk & on their site is a download centre & download the software for your R4 card, they even supply an idiot guide of how to load it (helped me). Its working fine now

I’ve tried your guide and it’s not working. I’ve downloaded the latest kernel from r4ds.cn and placed all of the contents of the “English” folder into my sd card. Then placed the sd card into the r4 and turned my DS on. The r4 doesn’t load.
I know the Kernel is real, it’s from the R4 site itself
I’ve formatted the card so there shouldn’t be any virus or anything in it

make sure you have the suitable firmware for the card…

Unfortunately he’s in Canada for 12 months and i now have no idea how to putr new games onto my card. Have have found sites to download them from but when i put them on my card they are not read. What am i missing?
As he had already loaded games he has already formatted the thing but on a different computer does this matter? I am not very good at technology and so most of the manuals are making no sense to me what so ever.
