Are Nintendo Gamers Afraid of Growing Up?
Why Nintendo gamers refuse to leave the past.
Nintendo fans are a strange breed. Many of them are in their 20’s, 30’s, or even 40’s, and they continue to support Nintendo consoles no matter how many mistakes Nintendo might make. While everyone might have their own loyalty to a company or product, Nintendo fans are loyal to a company that is well known for making children games such as Mario, Animal Crossing, and Pikmin. It’s embarassing to go over to a grown man’s apartment and see him playing as cuddly cartoon characters. Nintendo fans cling on to their childhood and they refuse to let go. They don’t know how to be like Xbox and PlayStation fans who have moved on from Nintendo’s preschool games, and play more adult and sophisticated games such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
Sure, Nintendo consoles get some M rated games time from time. Nintendo 64 had games like Perfect Dark, Turok, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day. GameCube had Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness, and Killer 7. And Wii has Madworld, No More Heroes, and House of the Dead. But you look at the piss poor sales for most of these games, minus the mediocre sales of Resident Evil 4, and you’ll see that most Nintendo fans are just zombies who keep moaning “Marioooo, Mariooooo, Marrioooooo” because they only want to keep playing Mario games and nothing else. The Conduit, Madworld, and No More Heroes all sold terrible. Conker’s Bad Fur Day sold terrible on Nintendo 64. Perfect Dark didn’t even sell that well on N64. Killer 7 sold like garbage on the GameCube. I know we are in a recession, and you can’t buy every good game on the market. But instead of buying Super Mario Bros Wii, how about you act your age and get something more mature instead of trying to relive the days of owning an NES and SNES. That’s all these Nintendo fans are doing. They keep praying and hoping that Nintendo will create games that will make them love gaming again just like when they were 6 years old.
Well sorry kid. You’re not 6 anymore. Nintendo turning the Metroid series into a Halo wannabe isn’t impressing any adult gamers. Your friends think you’re a loser for owning a stack of Mario games while they play Madden. Majority of adult Nintendo gamers, and there aren’t many of them because not everyone is a loser, are usually big time nerds. Adult Nintendo gamers like to flex their nerd muscles and memorize system specs of each of the competing consoles so they can argue over who is more powerful on message boards to make themselves feel smarter since everyone in real life thinks they’re dumbasses.
The Wii is the least powerful graphics wise. It has the worst online gaming of the 3 consoles. It has the least 3rd party support of all the systems. And it has the least hardcore first party software out of all of Nintendo’s consoles. And the only reason adult Nintendo gamers hang on to their Wii’s is because of the virtual console. The virtual console was put on the Wii because Nintendo knows their fans are a bunch of dorks who don’t want to act their age and only relive the past. These dorks buy Zelda games every few years just because their clinging on to that branch of hope that it’ll be the next Ocarina of Time. Instead of clinging onto Nintendo to help you relive your childhood, maybe you should go to a bar, cling on some breasts, and get laid. I’m not talking about the women that most Nintendo fans date or marry. Those women are ususally pretty ugly compared. I’m saying, lose some weight, and get a girl with some double D breasts.

Sure I’m just a teenager, but you have just insulted true fans of Nintendo. So you’re telling me that I’m a complete nerd fanboy of Nintendo just because I actually like them?
This article is bullshit. I’m getting a PS3 next year, but that doesn’t mean I’m turning my back on the company that saved video gaming, not to mention brought me into it.
On top of that, the Nintendo Wii does not suck. It’s a matter of opinion. I’m sure you people are just Nintendo haters.
Also, we hold on to the Wii for many reasons. WiiWare, motion controls, Nintendo first actual online system, Virtual Console, and that Nintendo actually makes good games.
Many people on the Nintendo Life site are adults, yet love the Wii with a passion. They aren’t people who are willing to constantly defend the console or Nintendo like me.
Also, why would we be afraid of growing up? We like to remember back to the old days, got a problem with that?

funny, most people playing MW2 on xbox live are little kids. I own all 3 consoles and I’m getting sick of the arrogance of PS3 and 360 owners. I think they are the ones who need to grow up. Nerds trying to be cool and acting like kids play wii when the truth is, all the mature level headed people play wii.

As I recall, someone, I think it was C.S. Lewis, said something to this effect:
“When I grew up I put aside all things childish, including the search for adulthood.”
I don’t know if that’s an exact quote, but boy does it apply here. If a game is childish, who cares? Why the hell does it matter? What really matters is whether the game is fun to play.
Hell, this isn’t even specific to the wii: think about viva pinata for the 360. It’s as childish as could be, and yet because it’s fun it has an audience far wider than just children. Hell I would choose VP over modern warfare any day.
I won’t try to make the argument that NSMB Wii is better than MW2, and you know why? The games are too different. NSMB is a platformer, MW2 is a shooter. The games are both fun, but they are too different to compare. I will say that I don’t like MW2 that much because it’s got a short single player campaign, and largely unchanged multi-player. The first one was good because it was a new concept, but this one is just lackluster. I’ve already beaten it on my PC, and it really didn’t strike me as any better than decent.
Also, I think the 360, no matter how powerful it is, is the worst console of the generation. Not because I dislike the games but for two reasons: One, all 360 games are available on either PS3 or PC with maybe three or four exceptions, most of which are likely to get ported over to PC at some point, considering all the others in their respective series have been. Two, controls. I’m a PC man, and I cannot stand dual analog. Mouse is all that works for me. Well, besides Wii-mote, that is.
Finally, why pick MW2 as the height of mature gaming when there are so many better games to pick? I would probably go with Theif: The Dark Project, or Farcry (which I consider to be criminally underated).
I’m a pure PC fan. And yes, Nintendo is…pretty old. But people have their opinions, and my suggestion is; respect them.

I strongly disagreed with your article. Nintendo is reinventing gaming for a new generation. With the Wii in particular, it can be looked at as modern day NES. A lot of there games have managed to preserve the spirit of what made them amazing games in the early years. The NES was inferior graphically to some of the other gaming consoles of the day but it did far better then the other ones because of there innovative way of creating games. That’s where “re-living are childhood” comes into play. Recently some of the games from Nintendo have managed to bring awesome franchises to the next generation while at the same time preserving there classic feel. Appeals to new gamers while satisfying veteran Nintendo gamers. If it weren’t for Nintendo, gaming would not be what it is today. So leave us older gamers alone. There is nothing wrong with re-living our childhood. You’ll find this out yourself when you one day say to yourself, “man I remember when I was playing blah, blah…etc.”. You’ll see. It may not be refering to Nintendo directly but your going to want to go back and play those “old” and “classic” 360 games or PS3 games. Mark my words, your time will come.
Well, after reading this article – I have come to the conclusion that you, sir, are a douche. Everyone has their own opinion, I understand. Plenty of people hate the Wii because of many things and tend to rant about it. But you just seemed to just flip every one of the users who play any Nintendo console off, just out of the zeal you feel about rated ‘M’ games. Just because it doesn’t involve gorey violence and sex doesn’t mean the game isn’t great, or mature for that matter (Not saying they can’t be great either). It just seems to be the handful of pricks like you who just love bashing on video games for not fitting the mold for newer generation games and knocked it up a notch and get the fans involved in an attempt to try stroking your own ego at the same time (Which you miserabley failed according to most of these comments.) I get annoyed just hearing an arguement between two consoles and wish the particepants would just drop it and stick to their own thing (We all have our personal preferances, hell you could stick to your own console.) But it’s dicks like you who decide to be an arrogant zealot and show the world how fucking gay it is to actually have gamers like you in the community.
