Happy Birthday to The Sony Ps2
This week the Sony Playstation video game console turns nine years old. Way back in 2000 is when the PS2 console was first introduced. The console continues to sell in stores all across America even after all of this time.
During the last week in October of 2000, the Sony Playstation 2 console was released for the low price of just $299. The Nintendo 64 had just released Legend Of Zelda Majora’s Mask and was at the end of its life, when the birth of the Sony Playstation 2 just happened. Now after all of these years its hard to believe that you can still buy the console and games in department stores. When will the PS2 ever die out?
Sony stated years ago during the Sony Playstation 2 generation that the console would have at least a ten year life cycle. At the time it was hard to believe, but now it is nine years later and games are still being produced for the system. To date, the console still sells over 100,000 systems each and every month. At one point this year, the Sony Playstation 2 was actually out selling the newer Sony PS3 system.
The Sony Playstation 2 looks to be the most popular video game console of all time. So far it has sold 140 million systems across the world. And how many games are available for the Sony Playstation 2? Right now there is a library of about 10,000 different games that you can choose from. And the PS2 is more affordable than ever, as you can get it for just $99. The Playstation 2 isn’t going to be phased out anytime soon. The console and games will continue to be produced through next year and beyond.
When the heck was the last time a Nintendo console lasted this long? You’d have to think back to the time of the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Even years after the Super Nintendo was being produced, the NES console and games could still be bought in stores. The NES was released in the mid 1980’s in the United States and the last game was released in 1994. Every Nintendo console since then has died an early death. The Gamecube, which was the PS2 competitor died on the market many years ago.
So, Happy Birthday Playstation 2! And thanks for continuing to bring the video gamers out than many many years of video gaming goodness. Will we still see the PS2 on store shelves in another nine years? Probably not. But if the sales momentum for the Playstation 3 does pick up, then this console might also see a ten year life span also. The Sony PS3 has got off to a rough sales start due to its high price. Recently Sony released a new PS3 with a lower price, and sales seem to be picking up. Lets hope the PS3 has a long life ahead too.
