The 3Ds Will Outsell The NGP, Guaranteed
The 3DS is Nintendo’s upcoming handheld and the NGP is Sony’s upcoming new handheld. The 3DS will outsell the NGP, I guarantee it.
With the reveal of the new PSP, the NGP, many people have feared that it will blow away the 3DS. There is nothing to worry about, I can guarantee that the 3DS will outsell the NGP just as the DS outsold the PSP.
The 3DS Targets a Wider Audience
Just like the Wii, the 3DS targets a much different audience than the NGP. The 3DS targets those who play games to have fun and the NGP targets those who play games because they feel they have to. As you can see from the sale numbers of the Wii, the 3DS’s audience is much larger.
Of course, there is overlaps. This overlap, however, benefits the 3DS much more than it benefits the NGP. Many “hardcore” gamers, the NGP’s audience, will be willing to invest more into video games, which means they may buy both systems. On the reverse, not very many “casual” gamers, the 3DS’s audience, are willing to invest much into video gaming. This means that most will only buy one system and that system will be the 3DS.
The NGP’s New Features Annoy its Target Audience
If you look at the audience of the NGP, “hardcore” gamers, and their complaints with the Wii and DS you can see that very few of them want a touch screen, back pads, or motion control on their handhelds. They said that motion control was annoying on the Wii and the touch screen on the DS isn’t good for video games. Why would they change their opinions when it comes to the NGP?
It’s not just the audience, though. The games the NGP is said to get and the games the target audience likes will only be harmed by the new features. Besides the second analog stick, a touch screen, back pads, and motion control will make playing FPSs and similar games very difficult.
The 3DS Was Announced and Will Be Released Sooner
The 3DS was announced at E3 last year and the NGP was only announced recently. Many people have already set their minds on buying a 3DS. Few people have changed their minds, which means the NGP will have that many less buying it.
The 3DS is also scheduled to be released sooner. This will improve sales for obvious reasons, but if you look at it in relation with the holiday season in December you see how many more sales it will gain. You see, some kids will get the 3DS in March and after. They will let their friends play it and then those friends will also want the 3DS. They will ask their parents for it and possibly get it for Christmas. The NGP has nothing like this going for it.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the 3DS will obviously sell better than the NGP. Besides all of the above reasons, which were related to marketting, the 3DS has a much better, unique game lineup going for it. The NGP just has more of the same, realistic games.

Ha well there is one thing you are forgetting. The fact sony has some games only released on their systems. Like LBP. And sony seems to be getting better at marketing their own games unlike the early PS3 days when virtually every good game was available on both PS3 and 360.
But ya this probably won’t be enough but still 2 ANALOG STICKS!!! haha that’ll be sweet. Yep i’m waiting on NGP
Haha, wow the 3DS is a useless cash in on a soon to be forgotten technology. A lot of people can’t use it and those that can will instantly regret the fact that they spent a huge amount of money on a gimmick.
The NGP will be the next generation must have hand held, unfortunately Nintendo have gone the wrong way with this one.
Thanks for the comment, Yngve Fiermestad! I appreciate your opinion but I must disagree.
Instead of writing out why in the comment section, I may make another article detailing why it is not a gimmick and will not be a forgotten technology.
Personally, I believe the NGP is a better system. I will not argue, however, that the 3DS will probably sell more consoles, meaning more people will buy games. I don’t believe that the NGP’s new ‘gimmicks’ will off the current fans. I can’t help but be overjoyed by the new system’s specs. The Nintendo series is known for appealing to the casual gamer, not the hardcore gamer. This explains, of course, the addition of M-rated games to the lineup. Oh, wait, no it doesn’t.
“…the NGP targets those who play games because they feel they have to.”
Um, what? Did we get brainwashed into playing these games? I’m pretty sure nobody ‘has’ to play games for some reason, unless they develop games for a living… I take this to mean that you think the NGP will appeal to the more hardcore gamer. I completely understand that, and I agree. Few people are hardcore gamers to the point that they need a more pricey, fancy system. Most people will be okay with the 3DS. Me, I’ll stick to my Sony PSP for now, and eagerly await the release of my “failure system”.
I do agree the 3DS will outsell the NGP because the casual audience will flock to it.
However, I disagree with your thoughts about the new NGP features being disliked. The second analogue stick has been long awaited. Combined with a grip, FPS will finally be playable on a handheld in a way that doesn’t make you curse every 5 minutes.
The touch screen is also desired because the NGP will have apps and is able to play movies and music. Drawing apps and the ability to pause your song/music by touch will be appreciated.
The back sensors can also improve the comic book reading experience by allowing a more comfortable way to hold the console and tapping to get to the next/previous page.
Remember that a lot of PSP owners do use those extra media capabilities and the new features will help. The touch screen will also make it possible for popular iphone games (and there are some good ones) to be ported over to the NGP. Developers that don’t want to use the touch screen won’t have to – unlike with Nintendo where, although they didn’t have to, they were strongly encouraged to use it whenever possible. This is one of the reasons why some games had touch tacked on. With the NGP, Sony has stated that the touch screen is an extra feature, not a primary, so they won’t be pushing developers to use it for games that don’t need it.
I personally love my DSi more than my PSP, but I’m looking forward to the NGP more than the 3DS (I haven’t bought the 3DS yet. No money at the moment)
I’m not saying the features won’t ever be liked I’m just saying that when developers use the touch screen experimentally for a game that people won’t like it.
Well, people were pretty excited for the 3DS and it’s not selling well yet. People were really excited for the PSP and it never sold well.
