Christmas Video Game Console Wars of 2009
The holiday season is approaching fast and the new video game gen console wars continue. For the past three years the Nintendo Wii beat out all the other consoles. This year will be different. Who will win the Christmas wars of ‘09?
For the past three Christmas seasons, Nintendo Of America has been outselling all the other video game consoles with their Nintendo Wii. The years of 2006, 2007 and 2008 were all top selling holiday seasons for the Nintendo Wii. But now it looks like the fire burning for the Nintendo Wii is starting to fade. In a recent article on the net, Iwata said that the Nintendo Wii has “stalled” and sales are starting to decline.
For the first time, the Nintendo Wii was beat out by the Playstation 3 in September video game console sales. And also for the first time since the PS3 was introduced into the video game market, it finally had a month where it beat out the Wii. Game retailers have also been reporting that the Playstation 3 has continued to sell strong since the price drop to $299, and the introduction of the new PS3 slim system.
This momentum appears to be continuing through the holiday season, well into November and maybe even into December. During this generation of the video game wars, the Nintendo Wii has always remained on top for nearly the entire time. Its been the Nintendo Wii in first place followed by the Xbox 360 in second place, and then the Playstation 3 in third position. If sales continue to be strong for the PS3, Sony could fly into the top spot of this current video game generation, yet again.
Being on top is nothing new to Sony. During the last two video game generations, the original Sony Playstation and the Sony Playstation 2 were both kings during their time. It looks like the Wii fad could be dying out. Anything can happen though, when it comes to the video game wars. So who do you think will be on top this holiday season of 2009? Here is my prediction for the top selling game consoles for the Christmas season of 2009. This is only my opinion, the sales reports will tell the real story early next year.
The #1 selling console for Christmas 2009 will be the Sony Playstation 3. Fans have been screaming to Sony that they should release the price of their console. It used to be as much as $599 and now its half the price at just $299. Sony just didn’t drop the price, they also released a newer slick version of the Playstation 3, the PS3 slim. The console has been out for three years and there are a number of AAA top titles at great budget prices. Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Metal Gear Solid 4 can be purchased for under $30 now. Plus you’ve got a Blu Ray drive and Wifi access along with the Playstation Network all built into the PS3.
In the #2 selling position will be the Xbox 360. This console also boosts a number of AAA titles at great prices and their are a number of exclusive titles that you can only get for this Microsoft video game system. The $199 price point is hard to resist. For the same price of the outdated graphics for the Wii, you can get next gen graphics and games for the same price. Plus, Walmart is having a sale this weekend where you can get an Xbox 360 for only $99. Technically you get a $199 360 with a $100 gift card. This is sure to spike holiday sales.
In the #3 selling position for the first time will be the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo has claimed the top spot for a number of Christmas seasons, but this year they will be in last place. The number of top titles for the Wii have steadily declined, and consumers are looking away towards the Nintendo Wii. People have gotten bored with the motion controls and are ready for something new and different. With console sales spiking for the PS3 and Xbox 360, Nintendo falls back into third place this year. With some interest in the $199 price and the release of a new Super Mario Bros game, some sales are made, but not enough to claim the top spot.
What do you think? Which video game console is it that will reign king of Christmas 2009?
