10 Reasons Not to Play a MMORPG

Thinking about starting a mmorpg? Think again.

A MMORPG is a “massive multi player online role playing game”. You most likely have heard of them;  World of Warcraft, Runescape and Maple story are just a tiny sample of the hundreds or thousands of these games out there.

Reason 1: You have a decision

My article is to convince you not to start, play or continue a MMORPG. You are the only one who decides if you play or if should you ever consider losing your life to these game companies.

Reason 2: Friends

Your friends will change, No one in the real world will be your friend if you spend every hour behind the computer screen, your new friends will be pixelized avatars, girls who are actually middle aged men. Have fun.

Reason 3: Honesty

Nothing is honest in a MMORPG, the promises by these games always have a catch, if event items your strive for have time limits or the unknown people behind their monitors are actually not who you think they are. MMORPGs must be connected to the internet, the number one rule of the internet is to trust NOBODY and never reveal any personal information.

Reason 4: Scammers

Cowards who in real life are nerds stay behind their computers for hours looking to scam people in MMORPGS, they will even make friends with you and when they are close enough, ask you for your password to “share accounts” and then hack you. Sarcasm and emotional hints don’t get translated through the Internet well. If you don’t want to be fooled by little kids who scam, keep away from the mmorpgs.

Reason 5: Community

In virtual worlds, people will ignore you, when you try to talk to them, ask for directions or a simple hello, expect to get ignored. I’ve played over 20 mmorpgs, i can’t say that this goes for all mmorpgs, but i must say that runescape would have one of the worst communities ever.

Reason 6: Time

A life of a mmorpg gamer is basically wake up, mmorpg and eat while doing so, mmorpg, more mmorpg, eat mmorpg, mmorpg, eat mmorpg, mmorpg. sleep and then repeat.

Reason 7: Social Life

Your social life will be sucked away from you, why go out when there is still a world to explore /sarcasm. You will rather play than go out and be with your friends, how do i know this? because i have experienced it, how can i say this about everyone? because my online friends were always on when i was, some even sleeping in the day and playing in the night to avoid lag and the summer heat.

Your school and work will be poor and you would do badly. there is no “play a little a day” your time for studying and other things will be turned into mmorpg time.

Reason 8: Your money

The only reason these games exist are to take money, many of them target little kids, if you are a parent and your kids want to play, go to google and search how kids steal credit cards for these games to buy virtual items that last for a limited amount of time, where you could buy the real item in real life. Subscriptions are also costly, don’t be fooled into the “free ones” no mmorpg is ever free, they will give advantage to the players that buy from their store, giving them super stated items, and leave you behind in the dust. So if you want to save your money, don’t mmorpg!

Reason 9: Addiction

It is an addiction, some people need to take prescribed drugs to stop playing. you can’t suddenly STOP. you will come back after your stop turns into a small temporary break. un-Installing the game will not help because its always available for download again. I’ve gone back to a game over 20 times after each attempted stop.

Reason 10: It never ends

A mmorpg is always filled with new content, good? No it means if you are weak and start playing you will waste alot of time  and not be able to stop. after you get things done, new stuff will be ready to steal time from your life. It will never ever end. and before you know it, you are living inside the world.

Conclusion

Its your life, but my suggestion is don’t play. It has screwed up my life pretty bad, but I’ve completely given up. I was probably using about 10% of total time since 2003 – 2008 playing mmorp-games. probably half a year in real life time. Play a regular game, where they actually have an ending.

Good Article ! Anything aimed at ending MMORPG is a good thing :)

If you care to gander at my recent article, the best thing you could get after playing an MMORPG is enough experience to work for the company, like Blizzard. Which I did ! And even that is not worth the time commitment.

Some of your reasons for not playing a MMORPG are valid. However others are easily arguable. Keep in mind that I am not advocating playing MMORPGS though. Just disagreeing with some of your reasons, in numerical order.

    1. This isn\\\’t really a valid reason. More like an introduction. Yes, people do have a decision to play games, however, when they decide to play the game or not, there are lots of other smaller decisions they must make as well, which can either lead to good or equally bad things. It can be complicated.

    2. Not every online friend you make is a middle-aged man. You\\\’d be surprised to see how many honest players exist out there. I\\\’ve only met a few people like that; none of them are my friends at all. My close friends are the ones who I have been able to actually verify whether they\\\’re real or not. And, if I haven\\\’t verified that someone is real or not, I don\\\’t trust that person nor do I let myself get close to them.

    3. Agree with this one.

    4. You can still play games and NOT get scammed by people. You just have to educate yourself on what kind of scams exist in the game, how to stay away from them, etc. A lot of people end up getting scammed because they didn\\\’t take the time to learn about the game, thus they weren\\\’t fully aware of what could happen to them. Also, if you play a MMORPG you could always build up your levels or unlock things yourself just so you never have to rely on anyone but yourself. And, if you\\\’re stupid or naive enough to give out your password, that is your fault. When it comes to account (or pixels) security, common sense dictates that you should NEVER trust anyone but yourself.

    5. Where\\\’s the proof that Runescape is one of the worst communities out there? I happen to play Runescape myself and I\\\’ve never had a real problem with the community. What you put in the community is what you get out of the community. Have you tried going on RS\\\’s official forums or joining a clan? Also, do you actually try to interact with people or do you just prefer to train quietly as well? Also, there are tons of other reasons for why people won\\\’t talk in an online game, although I won\\\’t go into depth about that on here. If anything I\\\’d say you should be glad that you don\\\’t get flamed instead, which is worse IMO. You cannot just say (or imply) that a game\\\’s community sucks without any proof.

    6. It\\\’s called time management. Sure there are kids who do nothing but play MMORPGS, regardless of the reasons behind it. I do agree that is a problem. However there are also plenty of people who have learned to balance real life so that playing games is just an activity and not an actual addiction. I could easily give you lots of examples of gamers that I know who play games a lot but still find time to care for their family, go to work, take college classes (and pass them), and so on.

    7. Similar as #6. There are exceptions. FYI I am a college student and my grades aren\\\’t bad. I also played Runescape in high school; I always got As except for an occasional B. Never got a C. I know a lot of student gamers like myself. So don\\\’t act like everyone will get bad grades just because he or she decides to play a MMORPG. Also remember that a lot of kids still have parents to keep them in check when it comes to grades.

    8. Kinda agree with this one. But, it depends on what you make of it. Some people don\\\’t mind paying for games, while other people would rather spend their money on something else that can be equally bad. Also, you could always get other people to pay for you, so that you never have to spend money on a game.

    9. Never heard of someone getting so addicted to games that he or she needs medicine to stop. But if that actually happens, that\\\’s his or her problem. While your reason #9 is valid for people who have addictive personalities, you\\\’re making it sound worse than it really is. Not everyone will come back to a game 20 times; some people just have stronger willpower than others.

    10. Sure it will end, when the companies decide to shut down the games. But I do concede that if the company does a good job it\\\’ll take a long time for the game to die, though. Again, you can prevent yourself from living inside the virtual world. Refer to #6.

some things may be arguable, some things may be in in extreme situations, but after being a mmorpg’r for over 8 years, you experience and find out about the evilness behind mmorpgs, Dlol, you mention that some people can quit easier than others, many gamers are kids, they see no point in quitting and therefore their life becomes destroyed with missing out on the importance of life. I admit i was someone who had a problem with mmorpgs, they stopped me from living my life. but its over now, and this is a message to warn others that stumble across this article.

you know whats so funny, I’ve talk about his so man times to myself, but I play MMORPG! I’m an addicted, but I have my reason! I don’t get a long with people in real life, The people that surround me are all self fish! My mind is constantly linking to thoughts, not good thoughts! The reason I play MMORPG, is because it’s a fantasy! I know fantasy isn’t real! I get that, no one has to be telling me whats real and what isn’t, Also I understand paying money for in game items! Might seem worthless, but it also depends! Trust me theres many reason why kids play this game! Either, they enjoy it way to much, but why do they enjoy them so much! Huh? have you thought about that… I know my reason! I actully have planty… and maybe to you it’s just an excuse! But your right, the addiction is bad! My dream is to own my own MMORPG, but my will be different, you see, I play so many of them! I understand why people waste so much of there time! It’s not only the game fault, It’s the person that’s playing the game! They need to learn to control them self’s! The game fault is that many of them like to make you play for hours just to try to level to the next! It’s stupid, and you are correct it’s a waste of time! Why play 4 hours just to level probably 4 to 5? Do you understand me… It’s stupid! In game items, I think that they should just make items that will make your character different from the rest of them! The one thing I hate in real life and in a game! is when you look like another player! Since I’m purely random… if you probably notice already, I’m a gamer! and I totally agree with you! just make sure you think more then what you put on this page! Because some people like me, Are lonely and it maybe a lot hard then you think for some people to get a long with others. when you notice how 75% of guys are stupid, dogs, and idiot’s are and how 63% of girls are blind, foolish, and just love drama! Trust me, It’s really true! I’m not just a gamer! I study everything around me! I have my own Belive’s. So what about you?

Agreed. Mmorpg’s are very addictive and VERY hard to stop, but there is one trick that he didn’t mention. This is what i did to stop playing 12Sky, even though i was a Master lvl 1 in it, i simply gave out my Username and Password and uninstalled the game, keeping in mind to remove all personal information before doing so. But yeah i did this and never returned cause that was a good 1 year worth of leveling up that i had done, but with one move it was all gone. I didn’t stop playing online games Completely, now I’m a First person shooter addict, but these games don’t really take much of your time, you get bored quick.

I play MMORPG games and i still have a great social life im not addicted at all the one i play on is Adventure Quest Worlds and you actually deal with real life people you become friends they are mostly honest, not many hackers they have all got their accounts blocked. im not an addict to anything except Cigarettes, i only go on the game 1 time every 2 days, im level 11 (only goes up to 20) warrior class rank 10(highest rank). there are no scams, money grabbing schemes etc. they offer you a year membership for $40 you also get limited edition weapons all the time. its not addictive its just fun.
