Borderlands Review
My review on Gearbox’s Borderlands out for XBOX 360, PS3 and PC.
Borderlands Review
Where to begin with this game? First of all, I must admit that I have been waiting on this game for a very long time. I mean come on, an RPG and a first person shooter combined? To me that mix is just simply genius. Even though I was highly anticipated in this game, it’s my duty to write a fair and just review.
I’ll start off with the story plot. This would probably have to be the main drawback of this game. Basically, your on an alien planet and your job is to discover a vault that holds who knows what. That’s pretty much it. You couldn’t possibly find a more generic plot than that. But for a game like this the story doesn’t matter since it’s all in the gameplay.
The game does a great job adding in the RPG elements into the game even though it’s still mainly a first person shooter. You allocate skill points each time you level up. Each character has three different branches that you can distribute these points to, each offering their own special perks. I think Gearbox does a great job with this but with four add-ons out, they really could have expanded on this.
Gameplay is like any other shooter you’ve played in the past fews years. If you’ve played Call of Duty than you’ll feel at home with the control scheme. I really like the blurring effect when you aim at an enemy. Other than that everything else is pretty standard.
The real innovation behind this game would have to be the weapon creation engine. Each weapon in the game is randomly generated and comes with all different kinds of scopes, elemental damage, stock parts, etc.. If that wasn’t enough each chest, vendor, or loot drop isn’t scripted which means you’ll never know what you’ll get each time you start up the game.
Overall, if your looking for some good ol’ fashion first person shooter action or a good looting game, Borderlands is for you. If your looking for a story driven game, your better off buying a game like Fallout or Mass Effect. In the end, I’d have to give Borderlands a hot 9 out of 10.
