Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Review
A review about Call of Duty 4, one of the best ever FPS games and one of the most played online games.
Call of Duty 4, released in November 2007 by Infinity Ward, is a first-person shooter game, released only for PS3, PC, Mac and Xbox 360. Modern Warfare is different from the previous Call of Duty games for the war which we play in campaign mode is not a real war. However, the fact that it isn’t real doesn’t mean it’s story is worst than other Call of Duty games or that the whole game is. On the contrary, Modern Warfare won many awards, which I will name further on in this article, including the Best Gameplay of the year in 2007.
Gameplay
First of all, probably the most important feature of COD4, is multiplayer online. Althought this feature is for one player per console only, the online feature is considered by many players as the most important feature in COD4, be it because of it’s maps, weapons, perks or game modes. The most popular of these are for instance Team Deathmatch (popular game mode), last stand (very useful perk) and Chinatown (popular map). When playing online, the player’s performance gives him experience points which let you level up your character if enough points are gained. Once level 55 is reached, the player has the “prestige” option which will attribute an insignia to the player, reset him to level one and take away all the bonuses the player had accumulated. The better your insignia, the more respected you are by other players. This option can be repeated 10 times. In online play, the player is also given challenges which, if completed, will grant players new features which are lost in prestige. For instance, the player can customize his classes (guns, perks, grenades, etc…), unlock new weapons, abilities, etc…
The second very important feature in Modern Warfare is the campaign, which, unlike Call of Duty 5: World at War’s campaign, is singleplayer only. Not unlike the previous Call of Duty games, the player takes the roles of various characters which will be given different objectives throughout the missions. In order to help the player complete these missions the HUD will guide the players through the missions telling them where to go in order to advance to the next level. The HUD indicates the distance left until the next objective and the direction the player must take to get there. Now, throughout the campaign, players have AI controlled allies which help players. These allies can’t be given orders; they do as they please.

After it’s release in November 2007, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare obtained many awards from Internet sites as well as gaming authorities, such as GameSpot, GameSpy, IGN, etc… Some of these many awards are for instance, Best Graphics 2007 (GameSpot and GameTrailer), Best PS3 Game 2007 (GameSpot and GameTrailer), Best Sound Design, Best Shooter, Best Military Game (IGN, X-Play), Best Story and Character of the year, Best Gameplay, Peoples’s Choice of the Year (British Academy Video Game Awards) as well as many other well-earned awards.
