Call of Duty: World at War Bonuses
A short guide to help the player understand the pros and cons of the bonuses in Call of Duty: World at War.
There are three different types of bonuses you can get in “Call of Duty: World at War” during multiplayer. These are shown below.
Recon Plane
The Recon Plane is a bonus granted when a player has gotten 3 consecutive kills without dying. When the player activates this bonus all enemies (excluding those with the Camouflage perk) will be shown up upon the mini-map for 30 seconds. In Hardcore games it will make the both the mini-map appear and the enemies show up too.
Advantages
+) Grants the player/team with a tactical advantage over the enemy as their positions will be revealed for a 30 second duration.
+) Allows Artillery Strikes to be positioned effectively based upon enemy presence.
+) Easy to acquire and use.
+) New players rely on the Recon Plane too much, so it is easy to pick them off if you have the Camouflage perk activated.
Disadvantages
-) Many of the disadvantages are ruled insignificant if the enemy has a Recon Plane too.
-) It is easy to become too reliant on what shows up upon the mini-map as opposed to what is actually occurring in the game.
-) Players often call in 2 in close succession, which wastes a lot of the time that could have been used on the Radar.
Artillery Strike
An Artillery Strike can be used when a player has reached a streak of 5 kills without dying. An Artillery Strike bonus allows the player to select an area to bombard with approximately 8 explosive shells, using the mini-map.
Advantages
+) Very effective at killing a group of enemies if it is positioned correctly.
+) Causes the nearby earth to shake and shudder, disorientating enemies enough to catch them off guard.
+) Covers up the noise of grenades and gunfire (especially useful in Hardcore).
+) Very accurate if used with a Recon Plane.
+) With experience it can be used as a defensive barrier in front of a building or objective.
+) Can be used to kill an advancing pack of dogs.
Disadvantages
-) In normal modes an Artillery Strike will also disorientate friendly players.
-) An Artillery Strike can kill the player who calls it if he/she strays into it’s blast radius.
-) On Hardcore games the Artillery Strike will kill friendly players as well as enemies.
-) The Artillery Strike can be slow to fire, thus enemies may have moved out of the allocated area by the time it has fired.
-) Damage is significantly reduced through buildings and walls, making it easy to find cover- especially on smaller maps.
Dogs
Dogs are the final bonus which can be acquired in Call of Duty: World at War. The bonus, as it suggests, unleashes a pack of dogs which attack all enemies for 60 seconds. They are given to the player when they get 7 kills in a row without dying.
Advantages
+) They are very effective at killing enemies, especially in close-quarters maps.
+) Not only do they kill enemies but they will distract them, allowing the player to pick of enemies easily with minimal threat of being damaged.
+) When enemies attempt to kill the dogs by gunfire they will show up on Radar, revealing their position.
+) All the kills the dogs receive will be added to the player’s kill count and the team’s overall score.
+) 60 seconds is a long time for dogs to be on the field, providing a very good distraction in Objective team games.
+) They will not attack friendly members of the team, nor can the player kill his own dogs.
Disadvantages
-) When they are killed they give the enemy team between 2 and 3 points each, depending upon the type of game.
-) You may be trying to get kills with a specific weapon and the dogs can “steal” your kills.
-) Dogs cannot climb ladders and often do not enter the water meaning that on maps such as Makin players can make an easy escape.
