Finding Your Best Gun on Call of Duty: World at War and When to Use It
This is a comprehensive guide to all the guns in Call of Duty: World at War and what maps to use them on!
This guide is intended to help towards the Wii version of the game, although you may find tips on Call of Duty: World at War if you have the other versions. Even if you don’t think you need the help, you will probably find something you didn’t know before.
The first thing that anyone reading this guide should know is that there is a difference in Hardcore TDM and regular TDM (TDM = Team Deathmatch). In regular mode, your hud is completely visible to you, this includes; radar, team scores, ammunition, and game time remaining. In Hardcore TDM, you have no hud available at all, other than seeing who has killed who.
Boot Camp
For users who have just got the game, Boot Camp is where you want to be. You are in a room filled with people around your level and skill. You are only allowed in between levels one through eight (1-8). However, you can be invited by a friend into bootcamp if you are a higher level. There are also some cases of cheating where you can get any perk on a level 4 account, which will not be explained in this guide for obvious reasons.
If you are playing in Boot Camp, you are either too low of a level to create your own class, or have just earned the ability to do so. If you are not able to create a class, I strongly suggest you go with the preset Thompson sub-machine gun class. It comes with a perk combination of Tabun gas and Gas Mask, meaning you can throw gas and be unaffected by it. Use this until you are able to make your own class. From there on out, create your own classes how you see fit. Your best bet in staying alive and getting kills is to use a sub-machine gun, Although a good perk combination will let you play better with a class such as rifles.
Free For All [FFA]
Free for all is a great place for beginners to start their way up to finding their true skill and weapon set. There are some who abuse free for all, and by this I mean high skilled players going in and playing against unskilled players. Good players can finish a FFA in 2-5 minutes. To get straight to the point, you will want a gun that will have a good deal of ammo, along with good power. The most used gun is the MP40. It has a lot of ammo and a good deal of power. It is recommended you use this gun until you have gained some skill. After getting 150 kills with it, you unlock a dual magazine which allows you to literally spray the gun and pray you kill someone. I strongly reccomend you not using any rifles when playing FFA. Sure they may make your aim a little better, but a free for all is not where you want to use this weapon.
Team Deathmatch [TDM] & Veteran
Team Deathmatch is probably the most played mode in the entire game. Again, the most used gun here is the MP40. It’s all about preference here. Those who use MP40 have a very easy shot and racking up the most kills without even trying. If that’s not your style, pick the gun you like. Machine gun? Rifle? Even a bolt-action? If you’re going with a rifle, I suggest the Gewher, it shoots fast and deals some power. Use the perk “Stopping Power” to ensure you are hitting maximum damage. Bolt-Action rifles are a one shot kill when using Stopping power. However, as a sniper you should be hidden at all times. The perk camoflauge will help you, along with bouncing betties to block off the areas you can’t see while in the scope. Also, when sniping you should be hiding in bushes. Do not snipe in maps such as Dome and Asylum, there are not many good spots. The best sniping levels are Cliffside and Hangar.
You should also know that there are glitchers going around trying to kill you from areas not possible to reach through normal gameplay. Be on the lookout when playing on Makin, as there are more glitchers there than any other map.
Everything said here applies for Veteran mode as well. From my experience, playing in Veteran mode only gets you against low level players, as the high levels are too afraid to go into it.
Hardcore Team Deatmatch [HC TDM]
My personal favorite game mode. The skill level involved in HC TDM is far greater than any other mode. As previously mentioned, HC TDM has no HUD other than who killed who. This is the mode where you can find your true best gun. Your choice of guns are unlimited here, as you have a chance with any of them, even a pistol. I will later list all of the maps and the best solutions for each.
Your strategies in HC TDM could be anything from, major run and gun, to stealthy as a ninja. The ninja player will use camouflage and a suppressor on his gun, this will make enemy recon planes completely useless against them. The gunner will run around with a powerhouse gun ranging between a submachine gun and a machine gun. The point is to destroy anything you see, however you should be on the lookout for the ninja players.
My absolute best recommendation for HC TDM is to use Second Chance as perk 3. This allows your teammates who are also using the perk to heal you when you are shot. At the same time, you have your pistol out to shoot anyone that tries to kill you (you cannot move in this process). Even if a teammate doesn’t heal you, you are still able to get some extra kills while downed.
Looking to complete some marksman challenges? HC TDM is also the best mode to do so. The damage system is very realistic, meaning 1-2 shots will finish someone off. It’s a fast way to finish those annoying challenge for guns such as trench gun and double barrel shotguns.
Breakdown of best weapons for maps
Cliffside
FFA: For any FFA, your best bet is the MP40 unless you know you are better with another gun.
TDM: Here you will have teammates, so you can sit back and snipe if you wish. Otherwise, submachine guns.
HC TDM: Really any weapon you want. They are all great here. The best would be STG-44 or FG-42
Asylum
FFA: Refer to Cliffside
TDM: This is a decent sized map which gives you several options- Submachine guns are the best bet on a TDM.
HC TDM: From my experience, Machine guns are overused here, but go with what you want.
Castle
FFA: Refer to Cliffside
TDM: You can go for sniping if you are using stopping power, otherwise a submachine gun.
HC TDM. A wide range of weapons available for use here. Rifles, or Submachine. FG-42 and STG-44 are great.
Courtyard
FFA: Refer to Cliffside
TDM: This is a small map, you will run into enemies often. I would stick with a submachine gun
HC TDM: FG-42 and Thompson are great here from my experience.
Makin
FFA: Refer to Cliffside
TDM: For any map I see MP40 overused. If you don’t have anything better, go for MP40.
HC TDM. Sniping works great on this map, just watch out for the glitchers.
Hangar
FFA: Refer to Cliffside
TDM: Refer to makin
HC TDM: Sniping works great here. Other than that it’s all about preference.
Upheavel
FFA: Refer to Cliffside
TDM: Go for sniping if you have stopping power, otherwise MP40 or your favorite gun
HC TDM: Sniping is great, but be on your guard. Rifles, and submachine guns are most used here
Dome
FFA: Be on your guard, you want ammo at all times. Sleight of hand will help along with bandolier
TDM: MP40 is the most overused weapon in TDM, which is why I keep saying this. Otherwise go with your main
HC TDM: Using Bandolier and sleight of hand is excellent here. You are constantly running and gunning any enemy you encounter. It helps to reload fast and have the ammo. If you run out of ammo, pick up someones gun and keep going.
Overview
The most overused gun in Call of Duty: World at War is the MP40, in anything other than HC. My personal favorite is the Thompson sub machine gun. It takes some skill to use and you can’t really spray it. I use the suppressor and play in HC. On the maps that are good for sniping, why not try it? it’s a great way to work on those challenges.
If you have good aim, you can use a rifle and destroy those who spray the MP40. Just keep working on it. As for Bolt-Actions, only use them on certain maps. Trying to main them on every map might work after a while, but it’s faster to use other guns and keep your skill up with them.
Hopefully this guide has helped you somehow, so the only thing left to do is load up CoD and put it to the test.
