How to Play Music in CS

This is a guide on how to play music that others can hear while playing Counter-Strike Source.

STEP 1:  The first thing you must do is go to you CS:S cfg folder, which should be located at C:Program FilesSteamsteamappsyour Steam namecounter-strike sourcecstrikecfg. Next make a file in notepad called autoexec and make it a .cfg file. In that file put this.

alias hlss-START “voice_inputfromfile 1; voice_loopback 1; +voicerecord; alias ToggleWAV hlss-STOP”

alias hlss-STOP “voice_inputfromfile 0; voice_loopback 0; -voicerecord; alias ToggleWAV hlss-START”

alias ToggleWAV “hlss-START”

voice_fadeouttime 0

Now save that file to you cfg folder. If it asks you to overwrite, say yes.

STEP 2: Now you need to download HLSS or Half-Life Sound Selector. You can download that and some other programs we will need later on here. http://www.hlss.us/index.php?p=1. Once you have downloaded HLSS, open it and press file then options. On the window that pops up click browse and navigate to C:Program FilesSteamsteamappsyour Steam namecounter-strike source. Now click ok, then click ok again to close the window.

STEP 3: Now start up CS:S and go into your console by pressing ~. If it doesn’t open then go to options and click advanced then enable the developer console. Once in the console write bind del “ToggleWav”. Delete will be the button that will stop and start your music. If you want you can change the button, just switch out del for something else.

STEP 4: To play the music it needs to be a wav file, so to convert MP3 files to Wav you need to download this dBpowerAMP Music Converter. You can download this at the same place you downloaded HLSS. Once you have opened dBpower Amp, it will ask you to locate a music file. Find whatever song you want and press ok. This next bit must be done exactly right. It should say, “converting 1 file to Wave”, be 16 bit (cd), 11025 Hz, and “One ‘Mono’”.  Now click convert and it will convert the file. Congratulations, now you have a .wav file.

STEP 5: Now we need to reduce the bass in the song or else it will sound horrible in game. To do this we will use GoldWave, which can be found on the site we used for HLSS. Once you have opened up GoldWave load the .wav version of the song you want. Make sure it is the wav and not the mp3 version. Now go to effect, filter, equalizer. There’s a bar that says master dB. To the right of it, it says 0.00. Change 0.00 to –17.

STEP 6: Now open up HLSS and click the green plus to put the song into CS:S. Find the file of the song after it is .wav and the bass is reduced. For shortcut, put something like F8. This is the button you will press to select the song. Once in game you will press F8 to select the song then delete to play it. Before you go in CS:S press the green thumbs up on HLSS. If you want to add more songs, press the thumbs down first.

That’s all. Enjoy playing music in CS:S!
