Mega Man 6: A Review

This is the 6th and last Mega Man game on the NES.

The last Mega Man made on the NES and it was none other than Mega Man 6. This came out during the last years of the NES life span and was different from the others. While retaining most if not all of the elements from the previous Mega Man, you got some new items along the way. Rush could be an adaptor with the Rush Punch and Rush Jet. There was also the ability to choose your path in four robot masters stages with one being real and the other being fake. You only get one chance to get it right unless of course you die and then you can start over the stage.

A little note on how to know which one is real and which is fake is pretty simple. The one that is the hardest to get to is the correct one. It always works out that way and that would mean being a bit creative and getting to the area without dying. This is your one tip for the game and it has a set pattern on how to complete them. I always started with Flame Man and then moved on to the next one being Blizzard Man and so on and so forth. You can do this but if you want to go to someone else instead to start, then that’s fine.

The story in this game is that there is a tournament to determine the best robot and it’s held by none other than Mr. X. Mega Man sees these robots but then he decides to go ahead and try to take over the world. A cliché plot but it is what it is. You fight the Robot Masters of course as always, which is pretty simple. There are adaptors that you win by defeating two of them being the Rush Jet and Rush Power.

Beat is still there but it’s maybe not as difficult as Mega Man 5 considering you don’t have to pick up letters. All you have to do is find the right boss in four Robot Master stages. The best way to get that Bird would be to go to the boss that has the hardest path. The easiest one however is the fake boss. While you get the power from that, you don’t get the letter and get closer to obtaining him.

There are two castles and this would be the last Mega Man game to use that feature. After you defeat Mr. X, you find out it’s none other than Dr. Wily directly. You k now what Wily wants to do, that’s right take over the world. After you defeat Dr. Wily, you finally capture him, tie him up, and send him off to jail. Then you get the standard ending and that’s it.

Maybe this just my opinion but I would have to say this is perhaps maybe the second easiest Mega Man game out there. You can put this game down for a while and then when you go back to it, you can remember what power beats what and avoid dying so frequently. That does take some practice overall though.

As far as the verdict on this game, I say it’s worth playing every now and then. I know, not everything can be up to a certain level of standards but the game itself is fun and does have some challenges along the way. If you couldn’t tell, each Mega Man has something different about them whether it’s major or minor depending upon your view.

I would recommend it if you are a major Mega Man fan as it is acceptable and usually these ones never disappoint and I’ve always had a personal enjoyment about the Mega Man Classic series. My only regret was that I never saw it in stores anywhere otherwise I would have gone for it. Should they get on the Virtual Console? If they’re by now, I don’t know what they are waiting on but they should get them on there as these are fun and I hope Capcom allows it to happen. With Mega Man 9 coming soon, it would be fitting to give this a look. Of course, if you can’t find the actual NES game, you could always go to Ebay or buy Mega Man Anniversary Collection.
