On Flash Games: Good Games 4: Bowmaster Winter Storm

Recommended if you like Worms or Angry Birds.

Hello, dear reader, and this is my review of Bowmaster Winter Storm. I played a good deal of Bowmaster Prelude a few years ago and checked in on a lark to find a whole new game!

At the base level, Bowmaster games remind me of Worms or Angry Birds – an Artillery game, where the fun and skill of it comes from selecting trajectory and power of your attacks and seeing where they land. Bowmaster Winter Storm allows you to select from one of two modes of shooting: one that’s closer to shooting a bow in real life, where you click anywhere on the screen, and ‘draw’ your shot back, determining trajectory and shot power; and an easier mode where one merely clicks and shoots.

Now that you know how to fire, monsters come at you, and you must shoot at them to defeat them. Each kill yields experience points and gold, which, after each level, you can spend to upgrade your character and pick new powers. This RPG + Artillery gameplay is a real draw, I scoff at Worms and Angry Birds, but once there’s experience and a sense of progress, there’s a certain attraction for me.

Winter Storm introduces classes, the Hunter, the Destructor, and the Mage, and the difference between them seems largely cosmetic, excepting a special skill for each: the Hunter has the Spike Trap arrow, the Destructor the Wacky Bomb arrow, and the Mage has the Chain Lightning arrow.

Graphically, it is aesthetically pleasing, cartoonish graphics and guffaw-inducing levels of gore (selectable, I prefer Lone Wolf and Cub level, ha!).

All things considered, Bowmaster Winterstorm is a good game, and I recommend you give it a shot.
