Games and Series That Shaped Me Into The Gamer I Am Today: Resident Evil

This blog shows how Resident Evil shaped me into the gamer I am today.

I have been playing games since I was just 4 years old. Since that time there have been many great (and not so great) games that have made their mark and have shaped me into the gamer I am today. In this series I will talk to you about the franchises and all the individual games that have made me into who I am and hopefully made me the better person for it. I hope you will enjoy reading this as I am having a blast writing it.

The subject of this particular blog is a very famous franchise that pioneered it’s genre. I am of course talking about the Resident Evil series.

I remember being very young when watching my mum (yes my mum was quite a gamer back then) walk through that now famous corridor and jumping out of my seat as that dog jumped through the windows and started tearing her apart. It really did scare the hell out of me but, I just kept coming back for more! To me, (remember I was about 6) this game had the best graphics out of anything I had seen before in my entire life. I saw the backgrounds and the zombies and the guns to be very realistic and looking back, and playing the game now, nothing could be further from the truth. That nostalgia facor hits me now, as I watch the famous first zombie cutscene and listen to Barry saying some of the worst lines in gaming history. I still enjoy this game even today, and I will probably enjoy it for many years to come.

We now skip forward to the time that really affected me and Resident evil 2 came out. Again, watching my mum play it made me think of it as even better, the fact that it started in an ordinary street somehow blew my mind and today I can’t quite put my finger on why. After watching my mum play it for a while, one day I couldn’t stand it any longer and asked if I could play it. I remember her warning me extensively how scared I would be and I remember saying that nothing would scare me. So, I turned on the Playstation, and started a new game on the Leon disc. I simply loved the voice that said “RESIDENT EVIL….2!!!” because it really did scare me slightly and made me want to play the game even more! Anyway, I was so excited, I skipped the opening cinematic and cut straight to the first area of the game. I was surrounded by zombies but I was surprisingly completely calm. I remembered what my mum seemed to do at this part and simply plowed through them so I tried the same thing. I died. When my mum died in the first and second game, she told me to leave the room but then I saw a chance to glimpse at what she didn’t want me to see. I saw the zombie knock leon to the floor and start eating him. I wasn’t scared by that at all. Then, Leon screamed and blood splattered the screen. That really did scare the living shit out of me so I turned of the Playstation and bolted out of the room and hid under my bed. I then refused to play or watch Resident Evil 2 again.

Watch the first ten seconds of this.

Now, Resident evil 3 was the one I remember the most out of all the Resident evil games I have ever watched or played because with this one, I had this bought for me rather than my Mum buying it for herself. As long as my Mum wasn’t using the TV, she would let me play this one on my own like my other games (Spyro and Crash Bandicoot FTW!). I remember first starting up the game, pausing it every 10 seconds or so to give on the fly updates to my parents. I remember being astounded by the fact you had an Assault Rifle, Infinite Ink ribbons and loads of guns and ammo already in the item box. I was in heaven. I remember simply blasting zombies left and right with god knows what, having the time of my life until, I reached the Police Station. Walking through those gates and watching brad get impaled by Nemesis was one of the more shocking moments of my gaming life. I then chose to fight him. I loaded my weapons and blasted him with everything I had. He just wouldn’t go down. I also couldn’t comprehend the fact that he could run at me and throw me o the ground. I died many times during this encounter (remember my age!!!) but, when I did kill him, I felt ecstatic! I was really proud of myself and proceeded through the Police station with an ear to ear grin. Then the bastard smashed through the window next to the dark room! I was shocked as I thought I had killed him. I saw a pool of blood surround him as though I had killed any other zombie. The fact that he was still alive and the fact he had a huge rocket launcher just blew my mind (both figuratively and literally!).

This really shocked me back then.

Unfortunately this is all I remember until a couple years back so we are going to have to skip forward a few years to RESIDENT EVIL 4 (Wii Edition)

Just over a year ago, I got Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. I had noticed that RE4 had come out back in 2005 but, I never really wanted it that much. That is until of course, I got my own laptop with Internet. I read up online about all the latest gaming news and saw that a Wii version of Resident Evil 4 existed so I decided to buy it. Boy, I didn’t regret it. This game completely reinvented Resident evil. The new control scheme (made even better with the Wii), absolutely oustanding graphics (I didn’t have a 360 or a PS3 back then) and an interesting story that I could actually half understand, made Resident Evil 4 one of my all time favorite games hands down. Another thing that makes RE4 stand out is the fact it is one of the VERY few games I have 100% completed and I still play today, even if it is to torture Leon or do an Infinite Weapons run to remind me of old times :D

Speaking of torturing leon >:)

That brings me to the end of this blog as the rest of what I could write is happening right now
