Three Upcoming First Person Shooters

A selection of upcoming first person shooters that fans should look out for in the second half of 2009.

First person shooter games are becoming ever more popular. The Halo series on the Xbox 360 is one of the most well known franchises in the world. Games such as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 are getting ever closer to receiving the coveted 10/10 rating on sites such as IGN. Whereas first person shooters were previously only played by dedicated shooter fans in times gone by, now they take the top place on the online played hours lists on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. As we enter the second half of 2009, a new selection of anticipated blockbuster shooters are getting nearer as fans wait eagerly for the next installment in their favourite series.

Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) – PS3/Xbox360/Wii

Modern Warfare 2 is the sequel to the 2007 Game of the Year, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The game has dropped the “Call of Duty” title, possibly because of the relatively low quality Call of Duty titles produced by Treyarch in the past few years, such as Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World at War. Like Modern Warfare, MW2 is set in the very near future, in a world where terrorism has led to a full scale war. This approach by Infinity Ward will likely be appreciated once again by fans who had begun to tire of repetitive World War II games. Look for this game launching in early November.
Expected Release Date: November 10th, 2009 (Announced on Gamestop website)

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (BFBC 2) – PS3/Xbox 360

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is set shortly after the event of the original game, that released in Summer 2008. In the original, “Bad Company”, a squad in the American army filled with military personnel with prior offences, were sent into eastern Europe to capture a dictator. When they discover there are mercenaries involved, they decide to go after the gold pay themselves. Presumably, BFBC2 will continue in the footsteps of the original, with engaging online combat, features vehicles, such as tanks, APCs and helicopters. Hopefully, the online will live up to the standard set by DICE in all of its previous games.
Expected Release Date: September 28th, 2009 (According to EA website)

Massive Action Game (MAG) – PS3

Massive Action Game is a Sony Playstation 3 exclusive, designed by Slant Six Games, the studio behind the Socom series for Playstation. Massive Action Game is set to be a revolutionary first person shooter in terms of online play, allowing battles of up to 256 players simultaneously. In this sense, MAG is set to give gamers the closest depiction of war in a video game to date. Both teams will each be split into 8 man squads, each with their own objectives and tasks. As players fight more often, they will gain the ability to control full squads and give orders to the members of their squad. If these tasks are carried out, both the squad members and the squad leader will gain bonus experience. MAG could be the game to change the way first person shooters play in the future of gaming.
Expected Release Date: November 24th, 2009 (According to VGReleases website)
