Adaption Corner: From Anime to Game

I thought it’d be a cool idea to discuss about a Porco Rosso videogame.

Adaption Corner: From Anime to Game:

How lucky! I’ve returned with a new “Adaption Corner”, not to continue on with Hitchhiker’s (That article is under consideration), but to discuss a little thought I had while at the beach located in the region of Brittany, which itself is location on the west coast of France; a fitting place considering how much closer I am to Adriatic Sea now….well not much closer….not close enough to say I’m closer to the word. Ok so I’m not that closer than if I were back in Britain, but a beach was enough to bring my mind onto a idea for a game based on the anime film “Porco Rosso” or “Crimson Pig”.

The whole of the Adriatic Sea to be recreated with all the locations from the film in Sandbox form along with a whole load of RPG (Upgrading your seaplane, improving your bounty hunter status) and Action adventure (Aerial combat, freely exploring islands or towns on foot). The campaign of the game wouldn’t follow the film or more precisely you wouldn’t play as Porco, let me explain. You character is a rooky pilot who is either male or female; who you can customise their appearance (No crazy hairstyles, clothes or anything beyond the stuff available in the 1920’s). You get the choice to create a secondary style of clothes for you pilot at the beginning that would act as your civilian attire.

The storyline of the game as mentioned wouldn’t follow the film (That would be limiting) but would let you be present at certain events from the film itself….running alongside it without ever interrupting the flow of events. What would be the storyline then? Well if this is a RPG it got to do with something important…..important. Oh I got one! (Insert storyline here). Wow! What a tale that would be!

The graphic style of the game would attempt to recreate the style from the film, attempt to caption the feel of the openness of the Adriatic Sea….nothing realistic and more inclined for a style like the film itself; maybe something like Wind Waker except a bit more serious in appearance. Audio of the game would use the soundtrack from the film and more, while voice acting would be used throughout (Frank Welker again for seaplane pirates).

You know the whole film feature of Halo 3 and being able to record certain points of a match, well this game would feature an extensive theatre mode like that but better (Well something more in-depth at least). Record a mission and then edit it into a impressive film you can upload onto the PC and share with others.

Along with the main campaign there’ll be the traditional side-quests to pad out the game, but would serve to provide with additional funds, clothes and maybe little quirky add-ons for ya seaplane (New paint colours, stickers or comical skins like a tie-fighter instead). As with all side-quests they would vary from racing, aerial stunts, dogfights or more bounty hunter missions (These would vary from escorting boats to defend from seaplane pirate to picking up packages). And there will be no balloon based stuff.

Along the way like any game with vehicles involved you’ll be able to fine tune your seaplane in an extensive garage mode where you’ll customise the engine, weapons and a lot of other stuff involved with the inner and outer workings of a seaplane. When buying new parts you’ll have to wait for it to be delivered by boat (a mission to escort yourself becomes available though you won’t get experience or money from it).

Your status as a bounty hunter is key for more experience, money and better missions along the way. So in the game the better you do a mission, the better your status becomes sooner. Once you gain respect among other pilots with status you’ll get the chance to form a seaplane pirate gang (How you go about doing mission throughout the game is up to you and so will affect the type of people you can hire). You get less money on missions, but they become easier to complete with having a gang to assist you.

A bonus mission right at the end of the game will let you faceoff with “Porco” himself. Along the way you’ll face characters that featured in the film from the main seaplane pirate gang to characters featured for only a few seconds….a sort of expanding of roles from the film.

Thought of the Day: July 24th:

Five days to face denial for death….this is a premise I’m going to use for what I’m going to write. A sort of twisting tale that presents the recent events riding on while present events from before the five days runbackwards (Presenting the same character in two different lights from after and before). The thought of how it came to me in my mind excited me on how it could work as a book or film or even a comic…that was my thought for today.
