Star Trek: the Top 10 Free Fan Made Games

Here are what I think are the top 10 best free games based in the Star Trek universe. They are all either completed and released or are in development.

Excalibur

Probably the biggest Star Trek fan game that is currently in development. In the style of Bridge Commander, the user takes control of a ship, however as well as being able to explore space; the player will get the chance to move around certain sections of the ship. Some early development screenshots have revealed some beautiful 3D ships and locations.

Supremacy

A remake of the commercial Star Trek game, Birth of the Federation. This promising game not only aims to remake Birth of the Federation, but also improve the many flaws that hindered the original game. A demo has been released.

Birth of the Empires

The Birth of the Empires project is on the same lines as the Supremacy game, only time will tell which one will be more successful. However, because of legal fears the game is being developed as a moddable non-Star Trek game, and a Star Trek mod being provided separately.

The Neutral Zone 2

Currently in development is a new version of the popular fan game Star Trek: The Neutral Zone. This has early promise of being a great tactical 2D arcade style game.

Red Alert

A very fun tactical 2d space flying game, it only has five levels and is slightly too easy, but it does provide a fun diversion.

Enterprise

Enterprise is a scrolling shooter in the vein of such classic games as 1942 and Aero Fighters. You command the starship Enterprise NX-01 through a space battle with 22nd century aliens. Along the way, you must rescue shuttlepods, protect your fellow starships from danger, and aim for the high score! I found this game to be a fun diversion, but slightly too hard to complete, and I don’t think it offers much replay value.

The Invasion of Cardassia

Based on the final battle of the Deep Space 9 series, this game gives the user the chance to take control of the USS Defiant and fight against the Dominion-Cardassian alliance. It’s great fun to play the first time, but it slightly lacks a certain bit of fun.

Final War 2

A small Starfleet Command style game, where you can create your own battles with ships from the Federation, Romulans, Klingons and the Borg, or you can play recognisable battles from the Star Trek universe.

Asteroids

A Star Trek themed take on the classic asteroids game, there isn’t much here, but retro gaming Trek fans will enjoy this, as well as people who want something to play in their five minute breaks.

Blaze of Glory

A very addictive puzzle game, that is similar to games like Tetris or Dr.Mario. To complete the game you have to match three or more symbols.

    Thanks!

I’ve just had a look at that, I couldn’t connect to the server as it says it’s down on the website, but it looks quite fun.

I think I’ll revise the article sometime, (maybe top 20), as every so often a new one pops up or a previously unheard of one is found.
