Final Fantasy is Overrated
Lets examine the most overrated gaming series of all time.
Final Fantasy is a series where it needs a decent storyline, because without a decent storyline, it really isn’t worth playing. There is nothing that fun in Final Fantasy games. The idea of “leveling up” is just a way to disguise the fact the game is not fun. If they give you a goal to level up and become super powerful at level 100, then you’ll be distracted from noticing that the game isn’t all that fun. At least with Pokemon, you had to collect all the Pokemon, and collect badges. But with Final Fantasy, the only motivation is to level up and to me, that is just shallow game play. Someone said to me, “Well you don’t have to level up. You’re not required to.” Really? Then how the hell are you going to defeat the enemies in later worlds? You see other games have bad story-lines, but they are very, very fun to play. That’s fine with me because that’s the point of gaming. Fun. With Legend of Zelda, you get the feel of exploration. The fun is finding new areas and dungeons to explore. With Final Fantasy, you never feel that exploration because you walk on some field, and every 7-10 seconds, some random invisible enemies that you can’t see will start up a battle with you.
Final Fantasy series continues to stick to their turn based battles in this day and age, and quite frankly, I think everyone is bored of them. The turn based system was created during the NES days because that was the easiest way to create an RPG back then. The didn’t have the graphical power to have real time battles on the NES or SNES. But the wonders of technology has improved the capabilities of what games can do, and I think it is just silly to see such an outdated, prehistoric system like turn based systems continue in current gen videogames. What worked in the early 90’s feels bland and boring now.
The character designs in Final Fantasy games are so generic and boring too. It’s your cliche, spikey or long hair dudes meeting with other long haired or spikey haired dudes. People want to treat these character designs like they are something special, but the only reason you treat them special is because you’ve grown attached to them after playing the videogames. If you laid any Square Enix character design on the table next to other generic anime artwork from other studios, you’ll see there is nothing special about Square’s artwork. Just more cliche anime stereotypical bullcrap.
People ask if I’m looking forward to the new Final Fantasy. What’s there to look forward to? I’ve already played it. The new Final Fantasy’s graphics is PS3/Xbox 360 and its gameplay is NES/Super Nintendo. Seriously, the turnbased gameplay has not evolved since NES/SNES. When Nintendo brought out Zelda and Mario on Nintendo 64, it wasn’t just 3D graphics. No, they took the 2D gameplay of those games and tried to translate them to a 3D world. Final Fantasy on the other hand, the only thing 3D about the game is the graphics and animation. But the game isn’t 3D. Pressing X once to make your character attack while this automated animation of him attacking an enemy is not fun. And then waiting, while 10 different enemies have to TAKE TURNS to attack your character is not fun. So you basically sit there and wait your turn while creatures are ripping you apart. There isn’t a lot of strategy to this. What is the strategy in waiting your turn to attack your enemies? The only strategy is you need to get 100 of those “pick me up” thingys where you can bring your other characters back to life if they die.
The storylines in Final Fantasy games are overrated. Ever notice that people rarely talk about the stories in Final Fantasy games except for Final Fantasy 7. And the only thing anyone ever seems to remember from FF7 is that some female character died. The game was like 3 CD’s long, and all people ever talk about was how shocked that this female character died. You barely hear them talk about the other characters. Final Fantasy 8 was like 4 cd’s long, and nobody ever talks about that game’s story. That’s funny because Final Fantasy fans always talk about the stories being what drives them to play the games.
I shouldn’t even call them games though. I mean lets think about it. The only reason Squaresoft left Nintendo to make games on PS1 was to put CGI movies on their games. Final Fantasy games are basically 40 percent gaming and 60 percent movie. Squaresoft is so obsessed with making movies that they’ve made 2 or 3 Final Fantasy movies. Honestly, maybe Square should just leave games and just make movies if they want to make movies so bad. Oh wait, even with movies they fail. The movie critics always pan them.
The only good thing about the Final Fantasy games is the music because the music does a great job of manipulating you into feeling like you’re playing something more epic than it actually is. The only music Squaresoft is hearing is cash registers ringing up whenever suckers continue to rebuy ports of old Final fantasy games on Nintendo DS and PSN of games they already bought in the past. I’m looking at you Chrono Trigger DS.
There are plenty of RPG’s with good gameplay and great storylines. And they won’t put me through 10 hours of watching cutscenes. If I wanted to watch a movie, I would watch a movie. I didn’t buy a videogame to watch 3D Anime. But maybe the hardcore Final Fantasy fans did because they assumed there would be some hentai in the cutscenes.

Very well done…
So I take it you think Final Fantasy is poo?
You’re an idiot!
i only read the title, and the description, but i couldn’t agree more
Wow, really? have you even played Final Fantasy? Or are you just not old enough to have played them when they were first released? You obviously don’t understand the complexity of any Final Fantasy story, because you are still stuck trying to beat a game with no story; ala Super Mario Bros. And lots of people talk about things in FF 7 other than the fact that Aerith died. Ever hear of Sephiroth? He’s only one of the most bad-ass villains of any game. And Final Fantasy isnt just turn based like they used to be. There is a lot more strategy involved in defeating a boss. And dont give me any of this crap about “Oh, there isnt anything to do but level up!!” If you would just take the time to figure out that there is 10 times the amount of side quests, mini games, and secret items in Final fantasy than your little Zelda games, you wouldnt be making retarded posts like this.
FF games have boring storylines and the gameplay mechanics suck? RIGHT ON!!! I HATE turnbased battle systems, unless the game itself is good and fun to play. Earthbound on the SNES is an example of where turn based fighting worked and was pretty bad ass. You had all those colorful designs and outrageous enemies. Just a great game! Also, Legend of Dragoon, got boring sometimes with it’s turmbased fighting, but the storyline made you get through it. But other than that, I’d much rather run around and beat the shit out things, like Illusion of Gaia. You still leveled up in that game, so it’s an RPG.
Anyway, my experience with FF 8….the first and last FF I played through. I got stuck at one part of the game, for about 40 minutes trying to find a button to press to open a door. SERIOUSLY, I was facing the right direction and pressing the “X” button but nothing. Finally, I hit the right pixel to open the door. Second, I got stuck at a boss battle, and the game wouldn’t let me leave to go level up. Sure, I could of leveled up at the place I was at, but I only got 4 exp. for killing the enemies in that level that RARELY popped up. So, at 40 – 60 hrs. into the game, I was NO WAY IN HELL starting over. So after trying to junction all these items, I used a gameshark and creamed that boss. Third, a witch attacking people in the past from the future is part of the storyline WTF??? How does that make sense?!? Other people, who thought FF 8 kind of sucked, totally agreed with me it was a shit part of the story. Also, the Laguna and Squall, Father and Son thing…NEVER HAD A FUCKING CONCLUSION. Unresolved storyline either = room for a sequel or Unresolved storyline = shitty storytelling. Lastly, the ending to this game was SO NOT WORTH PLAYING THROUGH!!! It was like one of those anime videos people put on Youtube set to music they picked to describe what’s going on, EXCEPT IN CGI.
I tried FF 10, but 25 minutes into the game, I’m like, “UGHHHH…When is something cool going to happen?” Stopped playing that. Squaresoft, If you want to make a game that doesn’t suck ass, make a sequel to ACTRAISER or something like one of those games from the Soulblazer Trilogy. Throw that turn based shit away! Some people have lives and aren’t willing to sit through turnbased battles that occur every 7-10 seconds. They are smart enough to figure out after awhile, it’s a waste of time. Also, stop with the faggy and gay anime looking characters. That’s the biggest hair up my ass about the whole thing. Seriously, what happened to when RPGS used to be about knights in armor, princesses, dragons, warriors, and shit like that. The SNES RPGS, for the most part were, the FUCKING BOMB!!!
IT’S AERIS (aerith in Japanese) WHO DIED! IF YOU LISTENED TO PEOPLE LIKE ME RANTING ON HOW AWESOME THE STORY LINES ARE FOR FINAL FANTASY (I can’t find the time to play all of them, I agree with that) HOW ABOUT YOU ACTUALLY PAY SOME FUCKING ATTENTION BEFORE YOU WRITE YOUR GOD DAMN ARTICLE!?!? THAT TURN BASED SHIT MIGHT DRIVE YOU INSANE AND WASTE A WHOLE LOAD OF SHIT OF TIME BUT IF ONE ACTUALLY GAVE FUCKING CRAP ABOUT THE STORY LIKE ME AND RESPECT THE CREATORS I WON’T GIVE A SHIT AND ACTUALLY ENJOY THE FUCKING STORYLINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WHINING ASSHOLES GOTTA LEARN TO APPRECIATE SHIT!!! IF YOU DON’T LIKE CRAP HOW ABOUT Y’ALL SHUT THE HELL UP AND TALK ABOUT CRAP YOU DO ACTUALLY APPRECIATE AND MAKE OTHERS APPRECIATE IT!?!?!? *P.S. UNRESOLVED STORY LINES ARE CALLED CLIFFHANGERS!!*
**P.S.S. I’M CURSING CAUSE THAT FUCKER JESSE IS CURSING. AT LEAST I DON’T DESCRIBE “crap” AS “gay” AND OFFEND SOME PEOPLE OUT THERE, CAUSE I ACTUALLY GIVE A SHIT (I hope a little kid doesn’t come across this)!
(Judging from your name KUNGFUPOO; you shouldn’t write an article on a game series created at east asia [I know kung fu is from China people, geez] or else there be some BIAS in it)
Wow, I should really stop typing in CAPS LOCK for so long…I’m such a hypocrite sometimes, but hey-only on special occasions like these.
OMG! Despite what I posted above, the “Final Fantasy VIII Laguna Battle Theme” causes my head to explode due to over stimulation when I hear it. The beginning of that song…OMG. This game had some hot music! Laguna was a pretty awesome character, I guess that’s why I am so sore over his storyline with Squall not having closure.
I play games to get sucked into and then completely blown away by a good story. That’s why despite all the hack and slash action in games like Devil May Cry 1-3 (I haven’t played the 4th DMC) and God of War 1 and 2, there’s not really an in depth story, so I can’t label them as great games everyone must play or they are missing out.
Okay…Okay…I’ll admit it, besides the problems I had mentioned above, FF 8 was decent. Not horrible and not the best game ever. But would I ever sit down and replay through all 4 discs again? No way in hell…Of course, that’s also a common thing with a lot of the older RPGS. Once you beat it, and you know all of the storyline, there’s not much incentive to beat the whole thing over again.
“Final Fantasy is a series where it needs a decent storyline, because without a decent storyline, it really isn’t worth playing.”
Wrong. A big reason FF7 was great was because the storyline was so horrible, you relied on hotly-debated fanboyism arguments, or participated in those yourself, setting the storyline how you liked it, considering there were hardly any facts, there was just enough to work with
“The idea of “leveling up” is just a….. ..in later worlds?
That’s kinda right, but leveling up also adds more time to the games. And on a note of ff7, It’s very possible to beat the game skipping every non-mandatory battle, and add many other restrictions(I’ve beaten it with skipping battles, no materia, initial equipment, with a little help on some bosses from a guide) Also, I hate people that compare pokemon to turnbased games. Yes, pokemon is turned base, and yes, enemies randomly pop out, but the gameplay, the ideas, and the fact that you can use over 100 different “things” instead of 4 or so npcs just makes comparing something to pokemon incredibly unrealistic. Maybe not like comparing mario to grand theft auto(which some people do(hence mafio mario)), more like mario to zelda 2
“You see other games have bad story-lines, but they are very, very fun to play. That’s fine with me because that’s the point of gaming. Fun.”
At this point, all games have unoriginal boring stories, with the once-in-a-while GOTY winning story, such as bioshock. Back in FF7 there was still some unexplored storylines. Aside from all that mumbo jumbo, I will say it once more, FF7 HAD no legit storyline, just a string of general agreements made by cosplayers with foam broadswords, but the game was still fun. I don’t understand why this has only happened to FF7, but it might be beacuase of that fact that it had no storyline to really go with, but it had many tidbits of info and facts that you could work with, and had no restrictions on due to too many facts. And of course games dont need a storyline, look at mario. If you think about the storyline, its saving a bunch of mushroom heads and there princess, who’s probably never gone to first base with mario and probably screws bowser due to getting kidnapped by him so much
“Final Fantasy series continues to stick to their turn based battles in this day and age, and quite frankly, I think everyone is bored of them.”
Also wrong, many games come out turn based , most of them being japenese RPGS, and final fantasy has a cult of fans that creep you to the spine. Its far from being unliked, but eventually square-enix will be making ff purely for the moeny and dish out the exact same game only this guy has blonde hair and that guy doesn’t stab himself..as constantly.
“The turn based system was created during the NES days because that was the easiest way to create an RPG back then.”
The legend of zelda; released 1886
Final fantasy; released 1887
sorry friend, turn based came second. Also, SNES was chock-full of real time games, from legend of zelda, to secret of mana, to mystical ninja. Sure they were’nt as real time as today, but they were more common practice then you think. I found it funny how you used zelda as an example but didn’t think about it being non-turn based :S

thats not stereotyped, thats anime damn it! Anime characters must have insane hair, no excuse. Aside from a few.
but in all seriousness, many games follow the same thing. The lone dude with a shady background wh oproably stabs himself. The bright girl that gets killed, to darken the already bleak mood. The best friend whos a sarcastic jerk. You know the drill.
ypical bullcrap.
“People ask if I’m looking forward to the new Final Fantasy. What’s there to look forward to?…… ……..The only strategy is you need to get 100 of those “pick me up” thingys where you can bring your other characters back to life if they die.”
I could go on about this, but I’ll leave it at people like different things, and many people love turn based, and since overrating means its only good because its popular, not because its an fun, and the general public are ok with turn based games( and i mean atleast people who grew with n64/playstation era) its not overrated. I mean the turn based thing, not final fantasy. When it was released it wasn’t overrated. But not its totally overrated, still a great game, but yeah, overrated.
after all that you went eway off track and started bashing other things, in a annoying fashion. By the way you missed the part where you go “now that i’ve talked about final fantasy in a whole, lets talk about final fantasy 7″. You could’ve just been bashing any squaresoft game and it wouldve made sense. Need to talk about whats bad about ff7 alone, not the whole series :S
also, I didn’t come here to rain on your hard work of making this, I commend you for being another peer who’s brave enough, I just felt like doing some negative criticing, for doing one is always fun. But i still loved reading how you said your article, so hit the “I liked it” Love your articles by the way, some of your opinions are fun to read
Personally, I write articles whenever I get inspiration, which is why I only got like 5, so you keep it up man!

By the way you missed the part where you go now that ive talked about final fantasy in a whole, lets talk about final fantasy 7. You couldve just been bashing any squaresoft game and it wouldve made sense. Need to talk about whats bad about ff7 alone, not the whole series :S
also, I didnt come here to rain on your hard work of making this, I commend you for being another peer whos brave enough, I just felt like doing some negative criticing, for doing one is always fun. But i still loved reading how you said your article, so hit the I liked it Love your articles by the way, some of your opinions are fun to read
Personally, I write articles whenever I get inspiration, which is why I only got like 5, so you keep it up man!
wow cant put apostrophes or quotes on this site, got a forbidden error. So much for learning proper english from publishing hahaha.
Final Fantasy is a series where it needs a decent storyline, because without a decent storyline, it really isn’t worth playing.
Wrong. A big reason FF7 was great was because the storyline was so horrible, you relied on hotly-debated fanboyism arguments, or participated in those yourself, setting the storyline how you liked it, considering there were hardly any facts, there was just enough to work with
The idea of leveling up is just a….. ..in later worlds?
Thats kinda right, but leveling up also adds more time to the games. And on a note of ff7, Its very possible to beat the game skipping every non-mandatory battle, and add many other restrictions(Ive beaten it with skipping battles, no materia, initial equipment, with a little help on some bosses from a guide) Also, I hate people that compare pokemon to turnbased games. Yes, pokemon is turned base, and yes, enemies randomly pop out, but the gameplay, the ideas, and the fact that you can use over 100 different things instead of 4 or so npcs just makes comparing something to pokemon incredibly unrealistic. Maybe not like comparing mario to grand theft auto(which some people do(hence mafio mario)), more like mario to zelda 2
You see other games have bad story-lines, but they are very, very fun to play. That’s fine with me because that’s the point of gaming. Fun.
I dont understand why this has only happened to FF7, but it might be beacuase of that fact that it had no storyline to really go with, but it had many tidbits of info and facts that you could work with, and had no restrictions on due to too many facts. And of course games dont need a storyline, look at mario. If you think about the storyline, its saving a bunch of mushroom heads and there princess, whos probably never gone to first base with mario and probably screws bowser due to getting kidnapped by him so much
Final Fantasy series continues to stick to their turn based battles in this day and age, and quite frankly, I think everyone is bored of them.
Also wrong, many games come out turn based , most of them being Japanese RPGS, and final fantasy has a cult of fans that creep you to the spine. Its far from being unliked, but eventually square-enix will be making ff purely for the moeny and dish out the exact same game only this guy has blonde hair and that guy doesnt stab himself..as constantly.
The turn based system was created during the NES days because that was the easiest way to create an RPG back then.
The legend of zelda; released 1886
Final fantasy; released 1887
sorry friend, turn based came second. Also, SNES was chock-full of real time games, from legend of zelda, to secret of mana, to mystical ninja. Sure they werent as real time as today, but they were more common practice then you think. I found it funny how you used zelda as an example but didnt think about it being non-turn based :S
Just more cliche anime stereotypical bullcrap.
thats not stereotyped, thats anime damn it! Anime characters must have insane hair, no excuse. Aside from a few.
but in all seriousness, many games follow the same thing. The lone dude with a shady background who probably stabs himself. The bright girl that gets killed, to darken the already bleak mood. The best friend whos a sarcastic jerk. You know the drill.
People ask if I’m looking forward to the new Final Fantasy. What’s there to look forward to?…… ……..The only strategy is you need to get 100 of those pick me up thingys where you can bring your other characters back to life if they die.
I could go on about this, but Ill leave it at people like different things, and many people love turn based, and since overrating means its only good because its popular, not because its an fun, and the general public are ok with turn based games( and i mean atleast people who grew with n64/playstation era) its not overrated. I mean the turn based thing, not final fantasy. When it was released it wasnt overrated. But not its totally overrated, still a great game, but yeah, overrated.
