Minecraft

Minecraft is a relatively new and massively popular indie game. At the time of this post, 3,049,351 people have registered and 972,883 people bought the game. The sole creator of this game is Markus ‘Notch’ Persson who until recently has worked alone creating Minecraft. Minecraft has been under development since May 10, 2009. At the moment Minecraftis in it Beta stage and is getting better everyday with frequent updates from Notch. Minecraft costs 15 euros. (About $20)

What is Minecraft? Minecraft is drugs mixed with a blocky world. Are there actually drugs? No… well maybe, but I am referring to the great addiction that many people find to this game. The objective of Minecraft is to survive. You start out as a blocky person in a brilliant blocky world, with no objective. Soon you learn that you can create, and destroy. You build some primitive weaponry and tools and begin exploring. You find caves, floating landforms, snow capped mountains, oceans, lava pits, rivers and many more things… And then, it gets darker. And darker. Soon you are lost in the world, with no shelter, no light, and soon, no sanity. You search around for a way to get a grip in this dark new existence. You start hearing noises… in your head.. as well as from the vast surrounding area. And suddenly you spot movement in the blackness. There are creatures moving toward you, there only intent is to kill. You try to run but soon learn despairingly that you are surrounded, and in an instant you hear “Sssssss”. And suddenly all hell breaks loose. You find yourself back where you started. No items and no tools. But you begin to learn how to deal with the environment, you build a shelter, you craft weapons, and you prepare yourself for the night to come.

Multiplayer (SMP)

There is currently multiplayer for Minecraft which allows many people to be in the same world to build, fight mobs (or each other), and have fun. Multiplayer is still in early stages and can be laggy and crash.

Mods

There are many ways to change, and add, things in the game. You are able to change the textures within the game and modify nearly everything. Unfortunately creating mods yourself requires knowledge of Java and how to code in Java. But you can still go online and download others mods and texture packs.

How to Install Texture Packs

Modes

Currently there is single player, multiplayer, and classic. Classic is a place for freebuilding, you have infinite of all the blocks and you can just build whatever you like. Classic also has multiplayer and is free.

Crafting in Minecraft

There are many things to craft and do in Minecraft. You can make tools, swords, bows, compasses, watches and many other things. There is also a variety of misc. items you can use. The creation possibilities in Minecraft are, literally, endless. There is a substance called ‘Redstone’ than can be placed to create wires which can be connected to certain objects to make them do certain things. Technically, with redstone you could create a mini, functioning, computer. Redstone can be connected to make logic gates, clocks, and many other things.
