Minecraft – Becoming a RPG?

The open-world sandbox game Minecraft is slowly turning into an RPG…or is it not?

The popular and viral sandbox game Minecraft has been in development for almost 2 years already. It’s been through a Alpha and Beta stage and now it has been fully released. The company behind Minecraft, “Mojang”, is still updating the game every week. They release development builds of the game to the crowd every week, they are called snapshots. The purpose of this is that most of the bugs get reported by the community before they update the real game.

So Minecraft is a sandbox game right? Well, a lot of things have been changed since the start of Minecraft. Mojang has added a lot of features throughout it’s development. Things like alchemy and NPC’s are slowly getting into the game. The lead developer of Minecraft called Jeb wants to make Minecraft a RPG styled game, turning away from the Sanbox style.

Is this the right thing for Mojang to do you might ask? The majority of the community aren’t complaining about all the new updated and RPG features. A good size of it, mostly the old school players, are actually not updating anymore. They like Minecraft as a sandbox game, not a RPG game.

Will Minecraft turn into a RPG game? Will Minecraft lose it’s hype and community? Time will tell…
