10 Farmville No-Nos
Published by Mitchell Carrington on September 10, 2009 in Online
If you want to gain the most cash and levels, then these are the 10 things in FarmVille that you should avoid at all cost! Note: if you play just for the fun of it, and want a good looking farm, this article doesn’t apply to you!
- Avoid buying buildings too early in the game. Buildings cost a lot of coins and don’t offer a way of making coins back (aside from earning ribbons). They do, however, gain experience, which is good if you have a lot of spare coins to use – so if you have a lot of cash, then this is a quick way to gain levels, but it will drain your cash.
- Avoid buying more decorations than you need. As with buildings, decorations mostly offer looks, experience and ribbons. Decorations are usually cheaper than buildings, so this is an easy ribbon to get! You can even sell your decorations after if you just want the ribbons and experience. Decorations are best to be bought when you have a lot of spare cash.
- Farm cash is scarce, so be careful what you spend it on. Fuel refills can benefit you time wise, but once you use them they are gone. Buildings and decorations, however, are permanent. Spending farm cash on fuel benefits you in the short term, whereas buildings/decorations benefit you in the long run.
- Avoid buying seeds that have a poor cost-to-profit ratio. Fuel can be scarce, and wasting your fuel on crops that will only get you a bit of profit is pointless. Experiment with crops to see what benefits you the most. Please take into consideration the amount you play each day, as this should affect your choice of crop.
- Avoid plowing, seeding, and harvesting by hand. Be sure to use the appropriate vehicle to save you lots of time. If you honestly like clicking 4 times more than you need to, then do it the old fashioned way. It will save you fuel, but it will take 4X longer.
- Avoid buying animals, as there is no farm equipment that automatically collects what they have to offer. It’s like manually harvesting your field. Same goes for trees. Only use trees and animals for the ribbons, then sell them (unless you really like the noise they make and don’t mind manually collecting their offerings).
- Avoid expanding your farm unless you have enough cash left over to fill it with crops. I suggest to always expand your farm, but make sure you still will have enough cash to fill it with crops (you’ll give yourself a hard time if you spend all your money on expanding and only have enough coins for 3 crops).
- Avoid helping neighbours out. Don’t waste time helping someone on their farm (scaring crows, raking leaves, etc.), as you get very little coins and XP for your time. I suggest helping neighbours until you get your ribbon. When you help your neighbours, they don’t gain anything (other than a notification). It’s not like gifts where they benefit from it. I do recommend giving gifts though, as they will probably return the favour!
- Avoid going on at the same time each day. Make the most of your fuel (as it refills every few minutes) by playing more often. You will be able to get the most out of your fuel this way, as every few minutes you get 1 fuel refill. So why not go on once every few hours to make the most of your fuel?
- Avoid making your farm’s layout look good (unless you are trying to impress people or have a good looking farm, which isn’t a bad thing). Just cover your whole lot with plowed land as you will get the most money out of your land this way. You can also cover it with animals and trees, but I suggest crops as you can make use of your tractor/harvester/seeder.

Great work..Very truley said…
Great tips!
Thanks! Love Farmville!
Great tips! Farmville is becoming so popular, it’s surprising!
I didn’t know it could automatically harvest yr crops.
great…everybody says what you should do…finally someone said what you should not…
What about us folks that only play for fun? We like the deco, the buildings–it’s just a game, but some people get so serious about it!
this is not a good guide man. this is a guide for people who only care about money and leveling. If that’s all you care about then why even bother? it’ll be super boring. I mean competition is fun, but this is taking it too far. Farms should be pimped out. Get buildings, get decorations. Its all cool.
btw i visit peoples farms
@Doctahhtran
Thanks for the constructive comment!
I do like to visit other people’s farms too! I do agree that it can get boring just leveling up and getting coins. But this is what this article is for, it’s for those people who just want to gain a high level and make the most out of the time (profit wise). I do plan to write an article with tips for those who want a good looking farm, as that is important to
@Julia L. White
I agree that the buildings and decorations look great! You are very right. This article is targeted towards those who are in it for coins and a high level. I supposed You could follow this guide until you reach your goal level/coins, and then spend it all on cool buildings and decorations.
@SurrealPsycho
Thanks! Glad you like it
& Thanks at everyone else who likes my article. For those who didn’t, I rewrote it to better explain my advice. Hope you like the new version!
I think this is a terrible guide actually. I’ve been powering out Farmville for about a week and a half now and a lot of these tips are based on your schedule, your goals, and your playing style, not what’s best overall.
I didn’t find these tips helpful. buying decorations and buildings is important as you are also buying experience and you can always sell them if you wish. It’s all about getting up to the next levels and being happy with your farm:)do the math when planting your crops. make sure you’ll be on in time to harvest and add the cost of the seeds, the 15coins it costs to plow and take that away from the final cost. I wouldn’t recommend doing the 3/4 day seeds as they take up the space so it isn’t as worth it as it seems.
your fuel regenerates so u mine as well save up and expand ur farm
It’s a good guide if all you want to do is get coins. But if you want to have some fun, then it’s too cut & dried. I made an American flag out of hay bales at one point. Took up lots of space and took a really long time, but all my neighbors loved it and it looked really cool. Sometimes I plant blueberries all day and harvest them every four hours, then plant tomatoes overnight. That’s when I want to gain levels. Sometimes I build barns, gazebos, ponds, etc. I move everything around all the time. I love Farmville and I have a blast playing it. After the animals could move I went on all my neighbors’ farms and made signs that said things like “Let me mooooooove!” It was fun.
Yeah, if you love decorating your farm, this guide should be avoided for sure. I just am putting the bare tips for a bare farm. When I get a lot of money I like to decorate too, it’s also very good experience (but it’s a one time thing). Once I expand my farm, I intend to decorate the additional space.
pff you like vehicles
you didn’t say a much better tip to do stuff faster
locking yourself in its way better then vehicles
Locking yourself in still means you have to do them one by one, which involves a lot of clicking. If you can put up with tonnes of unnecessary clicking, then go for it. I personally prefer vehicles because it uses 4 times less clicks. Which is significant if you have a huge property.
ok. I paid to expand my farm, but It has not changed. How do you make it bigger?
I didn’t know the fuel refilled hourly! I sold my tractor right after I bought it because I thought it was a waste! GAHHH!!!
Laura, if you paid to expand your farm it should have already done so. It doesn’t expand by too much, but you should notice an increase of land at the bottom and left sides of your field.
I must say, having played quite a bit of farmville, I totally disagree with some of your “no-no”s. Vehicles are a HUGE waste of money, you should AWLAYS expand your farm if you have the opportunity (this is the best use of farm bucks), helping neighbors out will give you big rewards due to the achievements. What you’ve said about decorations and buildings is true. Once you have enough cash you should simply buy enough hay bails to get the pack rat achievement and you should buy enough rest tents to get the architect acheivement. the money earned from the ribbons and earned from selling back everything you bought won’t leave you with too big of a deficit but it will leave you with a ton of xp
Actually, you should help your neighbors. Crops don’t grow that quickly, so you have plenty of extra time to help and gain a bit of money and exp.
Honestly many of these No-Nos I disagree with. If you have planted your farm and have money left over to buy more land do it right away even if you don’t have enough to fill it up. You might be able to plant a couple crops for some profit.
Help out your neighbors as much as possible, while the 100 or so extra XP might not be a whole lot the ribbons make it worth while.
Use the animals gifted you until you have all the ribbons which won’t happen for a LONG time.
You are going to have to harvest/plow/plant mostly by hand. Never buy fuel because it is not worth it. Buy only one piece of machinery because there is only enough fuel for one at a time. it saves very little time anyways
Early in the game if you buy 20 rest tents you get 15000 coins and a thousand plus XP for a bonus. Very worth while.
Same goes for decorations. With hay bales you get 5 XP per 100 coins plus the ribbons in the beginning
why dont they let us buy fuel with coins instead of FV?
the whole don’t help your neighbors thing is ridiculous. especially if you did just spent a big chunk of your coins on a farm expansion or a building or something. the 20 coins you get from helping neighbors can really start to add up, especially if you have a lot. and the 5 xp you get from each neighbor when you help them also really starts to add up. helping my neighbors is often what got me to a new level without waiting for crops to grow.
i also athink that vehicles are a completely waste of money. i stupidly bought all three of them and now i never use them. the fuel is not worth spending what little farm cash i have and what little fuel i do have doesn’t last long and i usually end up doing most of my farming by hand. it doesn’t take that much longer.
