Farm Town and Farmville: Why The Obsession?
What is going on with Facebook and the world nowadays, when all people seem to do is play Farm Town and Farmville.
I’ve been amazed by a recent phenomenon. Everywhere I go, every way I turn, people seem to be playing Farmville. It doesn’t matter if it is 12pm or 3am, there is always someone playing. I was on Facebook last night at about 2am. One of my friends had just taken some pictures of their Farmville farm. They then asked me why I stopped playing. I said it was boring and they just responded with a “puzzled look” smiley. These farming games are like some sort of epidemic, there is just no stopping them. Why should the world worry about swine flu, when we seem to be losing people to farming games quicker than we can harvest our fields?
This trend came to my attention a while ago, but it was only a few days ago that I realised just how rampant these games were. In my university, we have an area known as the Stand Up And Surf (or SUAS) area. This is a clever play on the fact that the “SUAS” is the Irish word for “up”. While I was walking past, I saw a girl who was using one of the computers. These computers are theoretically only for use on college websites: to access blackboard or check your student email account. Few students actually abide by these rules, but most avoid social networking sites (like Bebo, Myspace or Facebook) or sites like Hotmail, because they are so recognisable that everyone will know you are breaking the rules. This girl was breaking these rules, but not for something in any way important. She wasn’t sending a loved one an email, or checking something important on a news website. What she was doing was clearly much more important to her; she was harvesting her crops in Farmville. That’s right: she was skipping lectures in order to harvest her crops, in a Facebook game.
There must come a stage were this kind of behaviour, and these kinds of games, must be stopped. This girl is deciding to skip classes, ignore her education, so that she can play a game.

I know, right! Why is it such a fun game!
This could be said about any game. If a person will skip class to play a game, they will probably skip class for another reason (if the game didn\’t exist).
You probably skipped class to write this. Ha. First off, Farmville has blessed us with the knowledge of farming. It has given us a a Farming simulator that helps understand the difficulties of being a farmer. Great application, I hope they make more knowledgeable games like this one.
You dont seem to mind to take time to complain about thei girl skipping class? move along if the game isnt for you..stop bitching!
people have been “skipping classes” for video games ever since they first came out. get over it. it has nothing to do with the fact that it’s a Facebook game, tons of people miss class for all sorts of games. and don’t think that it didn’t happen when videos games were just being created in the 80s and 90s.

Actually, what I find funny about facebook games is that people who don\’t generally play games will play them… you know, if you play world of warcraft, you\’re a geek, but somehow when you play farmville, it\’s cool….. this I don\’t understand.
Realistic farm simulator??? \”so and so has discovered a lonely red cow on her farm\” … yeah, that happens all the time.
Oh, and farming is just so exciting.
dude if you dont like it dont play it!! point!.
WHY THE OBSESSION? you are the one obsessed with people playing farmvile…..lol@BIG CRY BABY…move on dude……you sounds like a farmville stalker…why don’t you go to class instead of spying and sticking your nose on farmville’s business!
True that, people even pay for “farmville gold” and what-not…
