RuneScape Combat Guide

This extremely detailed strategy guide tells you everything you need to know in order to excel at RuneScape. Also includes a small reverent hunting guide for the ones who are looking for the extra fun in RuneScape.

Runescape revolves around combat. Most things are combat related, even skills such as firemaking. You use fires, to cook food, to either sell to people who use the food to eat, or eat the food yourself. This is why combat is so important in the runescape economy. Read on to find out where to train your combat efficiently.

Before We Start…

we need to make sure you know a few things.

-Always wear the best armour you can which suits your fighting conditions such as dragon hide for magical monsters etc.

-Always wear the best armour you can, as in addy if you have 30 defence, rune if you have 40 defence. If you can afford it. Defence contributes majorly in exp gain. It determines how long you can train in a certain area. If you are training and must go to the bank every few minutes, the training spot is obviously not the right one for you.

-The scimitar is the fastest weapon for experience. It is fast, versatile, accurate, strong, and can fight in accurate, agressive and defensive mode.

-Before you start you must also have lots of food. Do NOT plan on training, and when you’re low on hp, fish. This only works when there is no bank around but there are fishing spots (Karamja). Always keep a lot of food stocked up in your bank.

-If you have high enough magic level, bring teleport runes. Do not rely on home teleport as it can not help you escape from sticky situations.

-When finding a training spot you must consider a few things. How much damage does the monster do? How far away from the bank is it? How crowded is it? How much damage can you do to the monster?

-If you have extra money, use strength potions while trianing. More damage = more experience.

-Finish the stronghold of security. Refer to another guide for this. It is a free 10k which will help you financially and also allows you to navigate the areas with ease.

Training Places

Level 1 – 20

It does not really matter where you want to train right now. Just attack anything that looks in your level range, though i will place some suggestions.

Men and Women

Probably the first attackable creature you will find once you hit the mainland from tutorial island. They are situated all around the world.

Monks

this and all screenshots below are created by the author

Monks are low levelled. They deal very little damage and if you get damaged too badly, talk to one of them and ask him to heal you. This is what i recommened for most people.

Chickens

Though you will not be able to stay here till level 20, you can kill chickens. They are basically free experience each. They do not damage you and the feathers they drop are useful for fishing or can be sold. The raw meats are also useful for food and can be used to train low cooking levels. I am not going to post a picture because they are easily found all over Lumbridge.

Goblins

Also another alternative. They are weak, have 5 hp and can drop low levelled drops that can be sold to general store. They are also found all over Lumbridge so i will not post a picture.

Cows

Cows are found also, all over Runescape. They drop hides which are very valueable. I suggest that you bank them so that you can sell them later. Like chickens, they also drop meat which can be used to level cooking.

Rats

Rats in the varrock sewers are also free experience. They do not do damage, the spawn rate is high but they are worse then chickens because they do not drop feathers  :( Your choice, just incase chickens are too full.

Levels 20 – 35

These levels are quite flexible. You can still stay with creatures such as cows and goblins if you can kill them quickly.

Al Kharid warriors

As the name suggests are found in Al Kharid. It is multiple combat area here so i suggest you watch your hp. If you are feeling cheap and do not want to use your own food, find someone being attacked by warriors and attack his warriors. This may sound nooby but if you are low on food this is worth it. It is right next to a bank so this may also be useful. Be careful though, when you attack a warrior, any warrior in sight will come and gang you. This may be good for people with higher defense.

Barbarians

Barbarians in the barbarian village are good experience. It is relatively close to a bank, they have medium hp, low attack and defence. It may get quite crowded but, multi-combat areas allow you to noobishly steal others barbarians. Also this place is close to the monastry. Incase you have no food, you may want to ask some monks to heal you.

Stronghold of Security : Minotaurs

When this was released, it made major changes to how f2p people played. The stronghold now contains many of the best training places for f2p. This is located in the middle of the barbarian village (which i hope you know how to get to now). Climb down a hole, and voila. There you are. The first level is packed with monsters suitable for your training. Stay here for a decent amount of time. You will level very fast. :)

Lvl 35 – 50

This is a long stretch. You may want to try finding suitable places yourself if you are not happy with my suggestions.

Varrock Guards

These are situated all over Varrock. They are easily killed and some are even next to a bank. Literally. They have fairly slow spawn but they have a weak attack and high hit points for their levels. They may sometimes become a bit crowded. Again, no image provided. They are all over Varrock.

Deadly Red Spiders

Around the higher levels, around 45 ish, if you have decent armour and defence, go to fight deadly red spiders. They are located in Karamja and in the Varrock sewers. They are great experience because they can auto attack you but they also gang you. This is a disadvantage for low defenced people.

Hill Giants

These are easy to kill and they drop big bones which are very useful for your prayer or can be sold for high prices. They can drop some stuff that is useful if you low alchemy it with your explorer ring.

Lvls 50 – 80

Now the levels are harder. By now, you should have finished the dragon slayers quest and you should be wearing full rune, or if you’re not as rich, full addy would be fine.

I suggest, if you are at the low level 50s, your inventory should look something like this.

Strength potions are for people who can afford them. If you can’t afford them, just replace them with food. The teleport can be teleport to anywhere though i do prefer Varrok as it is right next to the Grand Exchange so i can sell all the uncut gems i get from random events.

Stronghold of Security : Level 2

You can start here at level 50 though bank runs would be frequent. The monsters here have low hitpoints and low defence and are aggressive. They also hit a maximum of 4 and auto attack without multiplayer combat which makes this spot perfect.
To get here, go through the portal (assuming you have completed the maze), and then go through the east gates.

Once you are here, just stand there and watch as your experience sky rockets. Once the creatures stop auto-attacking you, do this.

stand exactly where my character is. Then run back South, to where the monsters are. Repeat. =]

This is the fastest experience for training to level 80 but you do not get any money from training here because Flesh eaters don’t drop much. Though i do recommend you pick up the steel arrows for training ranged. They drop them quite often. Though if you are bored of these guys you may want to go back to hill giants or go to lesser demons but i only recomend that for levels 70+…

Lesser Demons

Levels 75+

Lesser Demons have low defence but they have the potential of hitting quite high if your defence is not decent. They have the advantage of being quite near fishing spots but the disadvantage of being out in the middle of no where with no banks. They also may drop rune medium helmets which can be sold for a decent 11k each. Lesser demons are a popular place to train for rangers and mages since there are safe spots so it might be a bit crowded at peak hours.

Stronghold of Security : Level 3

Go through the portal that leads to the end of the maze in level 3.

Follow the red line and train there. Stand there and let the monsters attack you. Don’t bother about picking anything up, these guys don’t drop anything. When they stop auto attacking you, do this :

Stand exactly where i am standing and flick protect from magic on just to prevent the monsters from lowering your strength. To get here, simple go East from the training spot. After standing for 3 seconds or so, go back to the spiders and they will auto attack you again.

Moss Giants

Moss giants are easy to kill, do not do much damage and drop big bones which you can bury for prayer exp. They drop some nice items which can be low alchemied for the money with your explorer ring. They are located at the end of varrock sewers. With the new updates, you do not have to bring a sharp weapon to cut through webs anymore. Simply squeeze through. Though they may get crowded at peak hours they are a good alternative to train with if you get bored.

Rev Hunting

Revenants are ghosts in the wilderness that were supposed to replace pkers when Jagex decided to remove the wilderness. Though they are on a completely different level. They have very high stats and hit very high for their levels. The revenants can be found in packs or wandering alone. They have high healing potential, can battle in all three types of combat, and also they have boosted stats.

The list of revenants are as follows.

  • Revenant Knight
  • Revenant Dark Beast
  • Revenant Ork
  • Revenant Demon
  • Revenant Hellhound
  • Revenant Cyclops
  • Revenant Werewolf
  • Revenant Vampire
  • Revenant Hobgoblin
  • Revenant Pyrefiend
  • Revenant Icefiend
  • Revenant Goblin
  • Revenant Imp

For high levels, if you are unsure of your skill and are afraid of death, here is what you should take.

With an inventory of

If you are very confident of your skill, or just extremely rich you should go with :

And an inventory of

The R2H is there for the finish. If you are lucky, you should be able to finish them off with your 2h before they can eat to heal. You should fill the boot slot up with fighter/colourful boots. The amulet can be exchanged for a power amulet, if you feel you are lacking defence. While fighting, the prayer protect from magic should be left on. If it isn’t you will take a lot of damage from magic

If you are planning on taking on revs that are same level as you or higher, preferably go with a group. Like the old wilderness, revenants can only attack you within their level range. For example if you are level 80 and there is a level 39 revenant, he can not attack you. But if he is level 40, he can attack you.

Conclusion

The combat skills help players with many things. Attack is the skill that makes you hit more accurately, strength is the skill that allows your character to hit higher, and defence is the skill that helps keep many alive. There is no particular order you should train them in as they all benefit the character just as much. Though training will get a lot harder in higher levels it is worth it. To get to level 99 in one skill takes many months and even years.

I hope you have enjoyed and learnt alot from this guide. Though many of the training spots are for designated levels, they are just a rough guide. You could be level 50 and have lower combat stats then other level 50s because of your prayer. Everything in this assumption is an approximation of your strength.
