RuneScape Cryptic Clue Fest Complete Solution
December 7, 2009 has long gone so this event is over. Thanks for the $1 I earned in the few days this guide gained 300 views!
The complete solution to the Cryptic Clue Fest in RuneScape. Enjoy!
Due to a mistaken case of "identical content", Triond won’t let me post the clues in text so I had to put the forum’s actual image posts on here.

For 4 days, Jagex released a new clue in the Cryptic Clue Fest each day during the 2009 Thanksgiving event. The clues were posted on this forum thread. Here are the solutions to every clue. Remember you only have until December 7, 2009 to finish!
Each day’s clue contains a riddle about the NPC you’re supposed to talk to, and different types of riddles each day for the items and how many of them you’re supposed to bring to that NPC. If you bring no more and no less of the required items to the NPC, they will give you a clue about the next NPC to talk to.
How this guide works is that each day is divided into 3 sections: NPC, Items, and What To Do. The NPC and Items sections explain the solutions to the clues given, and what the answer is. If you’re not interested in the solutions, just skip to the What To Do section, which just tells you the items and who to bring them to.
If you didn’t do the secret first part of the entire thanksgiving event already, click here.
Day 1
NPC
The clue for day 1 is “To a sponger of Lumbridge is to whom you must speak, He asks folks for money, week after week.”
Lachtopher, in Lumbridge, is the answer. If you’ve ever talked to him before, he will have tried to beg for money from you, as the clue says. He tends to wander in the area southwest of the general store.
Items
The clue for the items you must bring to Lachtopher is a table and 3 word clues for the items you must bring.

How it works is that each word clue describes a 4 letter word that can be made with 2 of the letters on the left of the graph and 2 letters on the top. Then the item the clue is about is the one pictured in the square that the letters of the 4 letter word center on.
Item 1: The first clue’s solution is CAKE, which we know have lots of calories and frosting, the sweet kind. Find CA and KE on the table, and you see that the item they correspond to is rope. So bring 3 ropes in your inventory. You can buy ropes from Ned or a general store.
Item 2: A grizzly is a bear, and the pun BARE also means naked. BA and RE point to the square with a picture of a bucket. Bring 2 buckets. They are also available at general stores for like 2 gp each.
Item 3: You RATE things depending on their quality. Good Youtube videos get high ratings, bad ones get poor ratings. The square that RA and TE focus on is a banana, which you can pick from banana trees in Karamja. Make sure you get at least 5 bananas.
What To Do
Bring 3 ropes, 2 buckets, and 5 bananas to Lachtopher, who is found in Lumbridge generally southwest of the general store.
Day 2
NPC
Lachtopher will tell you “Your next contact is a server of drinks near the border of the lawless lands. They’re all a bit rough up there, but he’s a real smiling swine. Got that? Good.”
The “lawless lands” refers to the wilderness, where it’s dangerous (or at least to SOME people). The “server of drinks” is the bartender in the Jolly Boar Inn, which is near the wilderness, northeast of Varrock.
Items
The clue for the items may sound confusing at first.

The clues for the items are actually the same color as the forum post’s background, so they’re technically invisible. But the visible words indicate to look between the lines and that there are many things that are not always as they appear.
To see the actual item clues, you must select the whole area, either with your mouse or by pressing Ctrl-A. The highlighted text reveals something new:

These are the actual clues, which are pretty simple.
Item 1: You need milk to bake cakes in RuneScape. Bring 2 buckets of milk. You can get them from using normal buckets (use the ones from yesterday’s clue) on milk cows in the cow pen near Lumbridge.
Item 2: More playing with words here, they are referring to 7 fishing baits, to catch your contact, which could be herring or the NPC you want to talk to. Fishing stores sell fishing bait.
Item 3: In Roman numerals, C means 100, X means 10, V means 5, and I means 1. This roman numeral is pretty simple compared to others because it doesn’t deal with numbers 1 more or less than 100, 10, and 5. So CC is 200, XX is 20, V is 5, and II is 2. 200 + 20 + 5 + 2 = 227 coins.
Item 4: You use hammers to build houses and hitting nails. The clue says to bring 4 hammers, which you can get from any general store.
What To Do
Show 2 buckets of milk, 7 fishing baits, 227 coins, and 4 hammers to the bartender of Jolly Boar Inn, northeast of Varrock and near the Wilderness.
Day 3
NPC
The bartender says, “Are you listening, lugnut? The fella you need retails pricey rocks in the west of the white city. Have a chat with him tomorrow while you’re carrying the right items and he’ll oblige you further.”
Herquin, in his shop Herquin’s Gems in Falador, sells gems (pricey rocks) in west Falador.
Items
This day’s clues are math problems and brain teasers.

Item 1: The trim and hem need 10 threads. The collar needs half of 10, or 5 threads. The sleeves need 4 times 5, or 20 threads. The sides need 20 divided by 5, or 4 threads. The entire coat needs 10 + 10 + 5 + 20 + 4 = 49 threads. If the tailor buys 55 and makes the coat, 6 threads will be left over, which is how many spider eggs you need. Get 6 red spider eggs. They spawn in the Karamja volcano as well as the varrock sewers.
Item 2: A lot of the information in this clue is unnecessary, because Fred and Geoff have split the land evenly. Therefore, no matter what speed they grow their crops or prepare their fields doesn’t matter, because in the end they will both have grown as much as their even share of land will allow, which will be the same. They sold their total produce for 400 coins, and since they grew the same amount of produce, Fred gets 200 coins, which you also need.
Item 3: Each of the lines in this clue is about a letter in the first word and not in the second. When you find all the letters, they spell out an item that you need. In the first line, a letter that’s in JUNGLE and not RECTANGULAR is J. For the second line, the letter is U, which is the only difference in the words BLUNDER and BLENDER. Solving each line in the same manner reveals the letters J-U-G-W-A-T-E-R, or jug of water. Carry 3 jugs of water along with the other items in your inventory. You can get them by buying jugs from a general store and filling them with water at a water source.
What To Do
Carry 6 threads, 200 coins, and 3 jugs of water to Herquin in his shop in west Falador.
Day 4
NPC
Herquin tells you to “Head on to where the ground is granular and the solar spectacular, then quiz the fellow who likes to peddle pasttimes to parched passers-by. He’s a good sort and should provide you with what you are looking for.” He also says “Oh, and while you’re over there talking to our contact, you might like to buy some of his little contraptions – they can be great for organizing good laughs with friends.”
The granular ground means sandy ground, solar spectacular refers to the hot and intense sun in the Al Kharid desert. The fellow there, Faruq, sells items used for playing games with a clan, just like what the clue says.
Items
This is the hardest and most confusing clue in the whole event.

As some of you know (if you’ve read Postbag from the Hedge), the Chaos Elemental is a rather cryptic character, and responds to everything in what seems to be completely random words.
For the solution of this clue, the Chaos Elemental gives you a pattern that subtracts 8 each term. “What follows” is 3. Use 3 “to skip over the answer”, or skip to every 3rd letter of the Chaos Elemental’s first response, and those letters will spell out the items you need.
This is the response with every 3rd letter bolded:
Its no Mirasol all Gentle cats can tilt red Romulans rear crease bulbs salt gate
The bolded letters spell out smallnetairrunecabbage, or small net, air rune, and cabbage. They are the items you need. The amount of cabbages you need is 3 subtracted from 10, or 7. Sir Tiffy says you need 3 small nets, 10 air runes, and 7 cabbages.
What To Do
Bring 3 small nets, 10 air runes, and 7 cabbages to Faruq in Al Kharid.
The Final Clue
You thought you were done when you talked to Faruq. Unfortunately, he gives you clues about the group’s leader:
Our leader is south of a furnace and east of a store, seek him out and you’ll search no more.
He’s north of a bard and west of a river, find him now for he calls you hither.
As for what you’ll need, it’s a bit muddled, but I know a place you can read up on this kind of thing. As I gaze into my crystal ball, I spy something about “Active game player rescues our cliff imp?”
NPC

On the world map, you can find a house in Lumbridge in the location Faruq described. In the image, you see that the house is north of a musician, west of the River Lum, south of the furnace, and east of the general store. It’s awfully close to where Lachtopher walks around.
Items
The phrase “Active game player rescues our cliff imp” is an anagram of Creative Gameplay – forum specific rules, which is the rules of the Creative Gameplay section of the forums. Below the rules, they added the clues for the items you need:

Puzzle 1
The solution is a logic kind of thing. If Mark is telling the truth, then Kathy is lying and Crow is telling the truth, which is that both Mark and Kathy are lying and that can’t be right because Mark is supposed to be telling the truth. Also, only 1 person can be telling the truth so Mark and Crow both telling the truth is impossible. Same with Crow – if he’s telling the truth, then Mark and Kathy are lying. If Mark lies, then Kathy must be right and Crow must be wrong, which also makes no sense.
This leaves Kathy. Her claim that Crow is lying means that Crow was wrong, but that doesn’t mean both Kathy and Mark are right. The truth could have been that only Mark was wrong and Kathy was right, and that is still different from Crow’s current claim. So Kathy is correct and you need 3 eggs.
Puzzle 2
Much harder than the “Odd One Out” random event that the Mysterious Old Man occasionally takes you to, this one focuses on something other than the object’s purpose.
All of the objects but one can be created by making them out of a material using the Crafting skill. The only one that can’t is the chisel, which must be bought from the general store and cannot be player-made. You can make ruby necklaces with a furnace, ruby, gold bar, and ring mold. Coifs are made of hard leather. Empty pots are made of soft clay. And you can weave baskets out of willow branches. The clue says you need 8 chisels.
Puzzle 3
This puzzle is quite simple unlike all the other complicated clues you had to endure. There’s 13 knights, each with 3 squires, for a total of 39 squires. Each of the squires had 3 mules, or 114 total mules. Each mule had 2 coins. How many coins is simply a matter of multiplying 13 knights * 3 squires * 3 mules * 2 coins = 234 coins. You need that much to complete this LONG, LONG journey.
What To Do
Bring 3 eggs, 8 chisels, and 234 coins to Roddeck in his house.
Reward
Roddeck congratulates you for finishing the Cryptic Clue Fest, and explains how he was bored when no one visited him, and started up this whole event to see what everyone would do.
Your reward is a magnifying glass, which in my opinion is a pretty fail reward for such a difficult event. Equipping the magnifying glass gives you negative attack bonuses, even though I could still hit monsters just as well as if I wasn’t equipping anything at all. When worn, you can go to the equipped items, right-click it, and select the Sleuth option to perform the Sleuth emote.

Thank you. Yesm the reward sucks, but at least now I can say I did it. Nobody needs to know I totally cheated at it tho. lol.
there is a mistake you don’t need 6 threads but 6 spider eggs.
