RuneScape: How Drops Work

Have you ever felt that Jagex was "against" you by giving you the worst drops that anyone has ever been given or have you felt that Jagex "loves" you because they gave you best drops in the world? You not alone, many people feel this way! But how do drops work?

I myself have encounter a point in time where I have gotten the worst drops every then suddenly get the best drops in the world. Jagex aren’t just setting it so that you get the item when you kill the monster a certain amount of times, the speed you kill the monster or anything like that. Jagex set the drops so that a random number generator grabs the item off a table of all the monsters drops. All the main drops are put into one table and all the secondary drops into another table. Things like bones, I’m not very sure if they put it into a table by itself (it would go into the main table if the creature doesn’t drop it 100% of the time) or is just dropped by default. For example:

Item Name

Coins

A detailed view of some coins

Fire rune

Rune dagger

Rune dagger

Rune medium helmet

This example table is not what Jagex actually uses.

Jagex would make a table like the one above and make the rare items very, very, very small and the common items very, very, very big. In this way, the chance for a rare drop is very small compared to the other drops.

This drop rate is only for monsters and not PvP.

So now if you think that Jagex is ripping you off or making you too lucky, think again!

Hope this was useful to you,

Cheers!
