RuneScape Merchanting Clans: The Sad Truth Behind Them
A revealing look at the massive amounts of merchanting clans scattered across runescape.
If you are a regular player of the game Runescape, you might have seen the masses of merchanting clans being advertised. “Smoking Mils” and “Merchmasters” are some of the more popular among them. How do merchanting clans work? Well, let me first explain the concept behind them.
For example, say one person has 100 Air runes. The middle price for air runes would be 10 coins. A person selling 100 airs runes at maximum, will contribute to the rise in price of air runes, possibly driving them to 11 coins, although the volumes are much greater in-game. This also works the other way around.
A clan comprised of 100 people, eaching buying air runes at max(lets say 12 coins) would drive the price higher, to a possible 15 coins market price. When the set date/price has come, each member would sell their runes, making a tidy profit of 3 coins per rune.
This may sound too good to be true. To be honest with you, it is. I have tried and failed in these clans many times, each time losing millions. This is simply because the clan leaders, a group of 5 or 6 friends, in most cases, dump the items back into the hands of unsuspecting clan members MUCH BEFORE THE SET DATE. This is called a pyramid scheme in real life, and is a often frowned upon trading method.
Well some of you might think, “Well, what if I sell the items before they tell me to?” “I can still l make a little profit then.” This might be true for some clans, but not for many others. This is simply because clan leaders stockpile items BEFORE they announce the item, and start dumping a few days into the merch. So the key idea of this article is to simply STAY AWAY from merchanting clans and keep your hard earned coins.
