RuneScape – New Display Name Update

Introduction

As announced earlier, Jagex has released their new update that allows P2P members to change their display names.

How to Change your Name

P2P members can change their name by going into Account Management and selecting ‘Change the display name’

To let your friends know that you have changed your name, a little icon will appear next to your name.  When your cursor hovers over it, it will show others what your name used to be.

Note: Your username is still the same and you will use it for logging in, the display name just changes your name in all Jagex games.

Whats the Point of This Update

This update is a bonus to members as many Runescape users did not like their Runescape names when they signed up but later too strong to start again with a new name. However many F2P players think it should be available to them as well. This is what one particular user thought of the update:

This update also helps people in the game with an offensive name. They can now be changed and if they don’t change it, a Jagex moderator may change it for them to something appropriate. They will also receive temporary names while the change takes place (a sting of numbers would be a temporary, such as #123456789)

Once your name is changed, you will be unable to change it again for 28 days. After this period of time you will be given the option to revert back to your old username or to keep your current name. You will have 7 days to revert before your old display name will become available to other players (during this period, your old display name is said to be ‘Held’). You may get more than 7 days to revert if nobody else claims your name.

Conclusion

This is a very good update that will benefit the very high level players that have a very bad username that they do not like. People with offensive names are also being given a second chance as they can now have another username. However, this might cause confusion because if a high level player changes their name, any other player can claim their old name!

Note: It takes 28 days to revert back to your old name. In this time your membership might finish and that could cause you problems if you want to have another name so chose your name carefully.
