RuneScape Ranged Skill Guide F2P
This guide will tell you everything you need to know about ranged, including what you should use and what to train on.
0RuneScape Ranged Skill Guide F2P
Range is one of two non melee combat skills, the other being magic. Ranged is extremely useful because, like magic it can hit from far away, and players/monsters using melee will have to chase you down to attack you. Another benefit of ranged is that unlike magic, where you lose runes per cast, with ranged you just have to pick up your arrows, although you will still lose some as not all appear on the floor.
When you start range you will be level 1. At level one get a normal shortbow or longbow (shortbow recommended) and some iron arrows. The armour you should wear is, leather or fancy/fighting boots, leather vambraces, leather body, a cowl, leather chaps, leather body, if you have 10 defence instead of a leather body get a hard leather body and an amulet of power. At level one you should train on chickens, as they are level 1 and never hit anything. It is recommended to collect their feathers and the Raw Chicken and sell them on G.E, for funding of arrows, armour and bows. Chickens are found north of Lumbridge and also on the other side of the Lum River Bridge.
You should train at the chickens until level 5, getting their feathers and the raw chicken and selling them on G.E. At level 5 go to G.E and buy an oak shortbow or longbow (again shortbow recommended) and if you have the money buying some steel arrows is recommended, if you don’t have the money don’t worry, just keep on using iron. Keep on training on chickens until around level 10-15, and then you can start on cows. Cows are level 2 with 8 hp so they are relatively easy to kill. They drop cowhides which can be sold for around 180 on G.E.
Kill cows until level 20, then get yourself a willow shortbow or longbow (shortbow recommended) or if you have a lot of money, even a willow composite bow. It is 70k on G.E and gives a better ranged attack bonus than the shorbows and longbows. Something else you can get if you really want is some mithril arrows (not recommended as they are expensive) if you don’t want to use mithril, now would be a good time to switch back to iron as you can hit high with iron now. You should also switch armour, instead of chaps get studded chaps, instead of hard leather body or leather body (if you have 20 defence) get studded body and a coif instead of a cowl.
At level 20 you can start killing minotaurs and barbarians at Barbarian Village and The Stronghold of Security respectively. It is recommended to kill minotaurs if you have a higher defence, i.e you have studded body, if not you can range barbarians and use the rocks in the middle to safespot them.
You can train here until around level 30, this is when you should go to G.E and get a Maple shortbow or longbow (shortbow recommended) the best F2P bows. This is also the level you can start using adamant arrows, the best F2P arrows, but it is strongly advised that you do not use these arrows for training as they cost 100 each.
At level 30 start ranging on hill giants in the Edgeville Dungeon; you will need some food, and a brass key for entry. There are a couple of safespots in Edgeville Dungeon to range hill giants; a popular tactic is to safespot them and pick up their bones, body talismans, any runes and limpwurt roots then selling them on G.E. By using this method you get about 20k each trip. Another method, for fast exp, is just to kill them and still pick the items mentioned above up, but this time burying the bones for prayer exp, and staying at the dungeon even when your inventory is full; only going out when you run out of food. This way you might go in as level 30 and come out level 40!!!
At level 40 since you are F2P you have to keep your maple bow, but you can switch armour. Get green d’hide vamps, green d’hide chaps, if you have 40 def and have done dragon slayer then green d’hide body and if you want to spend some tokens from the fist of guthix minigame, green d’hide coif(you will need 40 def for the coif as well). This is when many people decide to stop ranging as they only do it for the d’hide, which by the way is the best F2P ranged armour in the game.
At level 40 you can start training on level 21 zombies and flesh crawlers on the second floor of the Stronghold of Security; it is recommended to bring food as they are aggressive meaning they attack you. This is very fast exp. You can train here until about level 50, which is when you can start on red spiders and moss giants in the varrock sewers. At around level 60 you should go back to the Stronghold of Security, go to the third floor and train on giant spiders. At level 80 you may want to start training on ankous on the 4th floor on the Stronghold of Security. You can train on Ankous until level 99.
When you reach level 99 if you decide to become a member you can get your ranged skillcape.
