Runescape Rune Making
This guide gives you Step-by-step instructions on how to make runes in Runescape.
First complete the quest: Rune Mysteries. The quest start is on the second floor of Lumbridge. Speak to the Duke of Lumbridge to start the quest. The quest will involve going to the wizard’s tower and the magic shop in Varrock. After completing the quest, you will be given an air talisman and will be able to mine rune essence. To get to the rune essence mine (the place where you mine rune essence) you either go to the head wizard (At the wizard’s tower) or to Audbury (the magic shop owner in Varrock) Right click on either of them and choose the option teleport. They will say some magic words and you will be teleported to a place where you will be able to mine rune essence.
Find a huge rock, which can be found by following the ladder on the floor. (See pictures below) Mine a full inventory of rune essence with a pickaxe. When you are done, find the portal, which will bring you back to where you teleported from. Now you either use your air talisman to make air runes or buy/find another type of talisman to make other runes. Right click on your talisman from your inventory and choose the “locate” option. There should be directions such as (south west, north east…) in the chat box. Then after moving in that direction for a while right click and choose the “locate” option again.
The directions might change. If it doesn’t change, keep going the same direction. If it does change, start going the new direction. It should eventually lead you to a rock with a little glow and some bluish dots on it. (See picture below) If you right click on it, one of the choices should be “examine mysterious ruins” Click your talisman, then directly click the mysterious ruins. You can also right click the talisman and choose the option use. Then directly left click the mysterious ruins. You will be taken into the temple immediately. Find a big rock in the center of the temple. (See picture below) It should say “Craft-at-altar” when you right click it. Use one of your rune essences you mined on the altar and all your rune essences will be bond into runes.
Below is a picture of the four talismans. (Air, mind, water, earth) I don’t have the body talisman and the fire talisman.
People have been asking about the “Large Rock” where you mine rune essence from. Below is a picture of the “Large Rock”
Here is the Mysterious Ruins you use your talisman on to enter the temple. Below is the Air Temple’s entrance.
Then after using the talisman on the Mysterious Ruins, you will be teleported into the Altar. Below is the Air Altar and the “ Big Rock” where you use the “Craft-at-Altar” option to bind your rune essences into runes.

where r the the rocks? i never find them.if u respond i will be very happy cause im low on runes:-)
The rocks aren’t like tin,copper or regular rocks with ore. Rune essence is a big tall rock with ladders and scaffolding. Follow the ladder on the ground to the center of the area.
Just tell me which talisman you are looking for.(Air,water,fire,earth or body)And I will tell you where it is. I know where all of them are.

ok but were do i craft the rune essence into magic runes?
The huge rock is a tall rock. Just click around and you’ll find it. Its kind of grey. Its not rocks like tin and copper its not at the side or anything. Its tall like a huge boulder.
You find a talisman which are the objects in the picture above. You can buy one at the general store for about 4 coins. If its an air talisman you have then the temple you locate with it is where you craft air runes. Ask me the location of any temple and I will tell you. Use one rune essence on a round rock in the middle of the temple. It should say “Craft at Altar” Then all the rune essences will turn into the runes.
Where can I get an Air Talismin?
You will be given an air talisman in the quest rune mysteries. If you have lost it then buy one from players or General Stores. Sometimes you can just find them.

I will post a picture of the “big rock”
I have already edited the new version the this article. I have added about 4 pictures to clearify the “huge rock” and “large rock” But it might be a while untill it comes out since it has pictures in it. If we are lucky, it will come out tommorow. If not maybe next week.
Since the article is the same, I will create a seperate article with the pictures and later delete this article. For now, this article will be up and the other one will probably be ready by Thursday December 6,2007.
where to get talsmans
You can find them on the ground, buy them at the general store (If it is on sale) item dropped after killing a monster or trade from another player.
P.S You can get an air talisman by completing the quest “Rune Mysteries”

Water altar is in the middle of the Lumbridge swamp, south of lumbridge — For those that asked, fire altar is to the east of the Duel Arena in Al Kharid Desert.

IDIOTS!!! you have to go either to wizard tower or varrock to tele to the rune essence area. There will be ladders on the ground leading you to a large grey rock you must mine them then travel to the area you want to craft them.
