RuneScape: Starting Good

The biggest mistake I see people make is when they first start.

I recently started playing runescape again and i said to myself “hey why not make an article on it”, for I noticed 90% of all populer game articles are of runescape, so here I am.

I was searching through various runescape articles and I didn’t see one on just starting out, so that’s what this article is for. Also this is for f2p

ON Tutorial Island

Now this is where the game begins, it isn’t hard at all really, but there is one optional thing you can do to get a head start; level skills to 3. You get free arrows, free runes,a furnace right next to copper/tin ores along with an anvil, over a dozen trees, tinderbox, and a pond right next to the dozen trees. I wouldn’t reccomend bringing all combat skills to 3,that would take forever, unless your being a mage or ranger, since you only need to level one skilll. For combat users id suggest 3 strength and maybe 2 or 3 defense, but dont get attack yet. As for the other skills, its so fast to get to level 3 its not even worth deciding if your going to do all or none of them, just do them all!

OFF Tutorial Island

When your off tutorial island you dont keep what was in your inventory, only the bare mininum of what you could have (1 bronze dagger,1 bronze shortsword,1 wood shield, some runes, cooked bread, cooked shrimp, bronze hatchet, bronze pickaxe, tinderbox, and a few other minor items). You start in a city called lumbridge. There’s several combat tutors about,id suggest talking to them all, the mage will give some runes, the archer will give a bow better then the one you got,and the combat tutor will give a better sword/shield. It’s worth noting you can only get this once, and when you drop it its gone forever. Now then you can start this off 2 different ways. You can go level your combat OR you can go level a money skill. Ill go into detail on both

Starting with combat,as melee

If your a Mage or Ranger i suggest you dont start off doing this, for you need a decent amount of gold to afford the arrows/runes needed. Combat users have it much easier.First of all, kill some goblins for some cash,20 gold should suffice. Now all you need to do is take out your gold, take out your wooden shield/bronze shortsword and any other items you dont plan on ever using, sell all but the shield(you can sell the shield too if you want) then from where you first started with camera facing north, go east across the bridge and to the gate. Cough up 10 gold and head to the city in the desert of Al’Kharid. Here go to the Scimitar shop. These weapons are probably the best combat weapons for f2p users,so whenever you have enough money and high enough skill level, upgrade your skimmy(scimitar). Now with scimitar in hand go to the cows and slaughter them, picking up cow hides whenever dropped and banking them(you can sell them at the grand exchange located in varrock north of lumbridge across the bridge for some good starting cash). Also, you can pick up bones and bury them to level your prayer, which is an extremely helpful skill. You should stay here leveling on cows all the way to atleast level 25, from there theres millions of other guides to figure out what to do, so good luck!

Starting with combat,as ranger

You start with some arrows, but you need to make great use of them,so you cant hide behind a fence or anything if your going to start combat as a ranger, you need to be right in front of the cow picking up every arrows that doesnt break, until you sell enough cow hides to be able to afford not picking up arrows. Like with combat, upgrade your bow whenever possible, and buy arrows with the rest. Theres no need to worry about armour with cows, becausew if you die with just bows/arrows or anything else you keep the bows/arrows and have plenty of time to get to your grave without losing any cow hides you had. After you get 30 combat(you should get 15 defense also) you will need armour, but by then, armour for rangers is chump change, also i suggest using bronze arrows for leveling, only use other arrows when your doing pvp, gutix, etc.

Starting with combat as mage

First off, this nay impossible, you should get atleast 2k from skills before doing this, probably 3 or 4 thousand wouldn’t hurt. When you do so, buy an air staff, and you mine as well by the wizard hat, robes, and a cape since that totals to like 500 gold, put the rest into the other rune needed for air blast, mind runes. Now if your interested in just getting fast exp,you can go to a magic dummy north of the castle, but this means no cow hides, meaning you will need to use skills to make money. You can buy all this at the grand exchange in varrock

Starting with a skill

I suggest this for anybody, not only does it make leveling easier because you can afford better items, BUT its needed for ranging/mageing because of the amount of gold needed for arrows/runes. I’ll branch this in 3 catagories.

Melee user starting with a skill

This isn’t required, but its always a nice start so you dont have to pay as much. First off,no matter what skill you plan on using to make money with, your going to want to use mining/smithing currently, and get smithing all the way to 18. To start, get out your pickaxe and head south of lumbridge, taking 1/2 an inventory or tin and copper, then bringing it to the furnace and making them into bars, then putting them in the bank, your going to want to save for 15 bars, the rest you can sell at the grand exchange. Once you hit level 18 in smithing, get 15 bars,a hammer, and head to Varrock. At the anvil in Varrock, you want to make A bronze scimitar, bronze full helm, bronze platelegs, bronze platebody, and bronze kiteshield. If you have a lot of extra money left, buying an amulet of power in the grand exchange is a great thing to get along with a cape, whom both provide some minor stat boosts, amulet of power being the best amulet for melee f2p users. Another option is once you hit 18 smithing,to sell all your bars, which should be more than enough to afford a whole set of iron from the grand exchange, and possibly steel armour, but if your starting with skills, you need 5 defense for steel armour and 5 attack for steel weapons, which you could easily just get a bronze skimmy and kill cows until you have 5 in both.

Ranged user starting with a skill

Since f2p rangers cant make there bows, or arrows, and since there armour is too affordable to bother leveling a skill to make, it doesnt matter what skill you use to get some money. Fishing can be good once you can catch anchovies, and woodcutting can be good once you can cut oaks, its worth noting that firemaking is entirely pointless for f2p users and is only leveled for an easy level 99 skill. So pick your poison. For wood cutting, whilst cutting normal logs, just cut them at the place near the furnace and sell them at the general store, once you can cut oaks you can go to draynor, which is west of lumbridge and cut the oaks there, which are inches from a bank. Also this is the best place to cut willows, since theres 5 and they’re so close to a bank, Draynor is also a great place to start fishing, since its right next to a bank and you can both net and fishing pole the water, but watch out for the level 7 dark mages, they can do tons of damage if your not leveled enough.

Mage user starting with a skill

The exact same money making tips are used for mages, the only difference is your goals of what to buy is top of a robe,a wizard hat,and if you want it to match,a skirt from the varrock clothes store. You also want an air staff to start off, an amulet of magic, and the rest of your money goes into mind runes. You could go ahead and try to level runecrafting, but you need to do the quest Rune mysteries( guide here http://runehq.com/guide.php?type=quest&id=0117) You don’t need to do anything for this quest, it’s just a lot of walking. I believe during the quest you get an air talisman, you got 2 options. 1 mine rune essance and bank it at the teleport in varrock and use the air tally at the rock south of falador to make air essance or 2 do the same thing but sell your air tally and buy an air tiera so you have an extra slot for rune essance. Level this until you can make mind runes, then get a mind talisman or tiera(goes on your head) and bank mind runes. This works for starting, but later runes you must buy or get off drops from monsters since they’re members only, the big ones being nature runes and law runes.

Well thats my guide for just starting, hope you all found it helpful, and if you did, please comment and “I like it” :)
