Runescape: The Complete Cat Guide
Cats are a members only feature that can bring joy to any adventurer.
Have you ever wondered what Runescape would be like if you had a cat? Now you can have that feeling! I will teach you how to get a cat, how to look after a cat and some interesting cat related facts.
To obtain a cat you must complete the members quest Gertrude’s Cat. Once you have completed the quest you can talk to Gertrude to get your first kitten. If you lose your cat, you may buy another one off of gertrude for 100gp. You may only have one own one kitten, cat, wily or lazy cat at one time. Now that you have your cat, it is time to learn how to take care of it.
Taking care of a kitten is a simple process in Runescape. Your kitten will not grow into a cat if it is in your inventory. Cats can’t live forever without food. You will get a message when it is hungry and if you don’t feed it you will get another message telling you that it is really hungry. If you refuse to feed your kitten, it will run away and won’t come back. Kittens will eat and fish (it doesn’t have to be cooked) and drink milk. If you are around any level 1 rats, you can interact with your cat and tell it to chase the rat(s). Note that kittens aren’t as good at killing rats than fully grown cats. You must also give your kitten plenty of attention otherwise it will run away. To do this just interact with your kitten and select stroke. After a while (assuming the cat isn’t in your inventory) your kitten will become a cat!
Cats are even easier to take care of. You no longer have to give it attention or feed it. Grown cats can also catch rats better than kittens. Grown cats will become overgrown cats as long as they aren’t in your inventory.
Overgrown cats do not do anything. They can’t catch rats anymore. If you have completed the quest Rat Catchers, you will have access to wily and lazy cats.
The only way to get a wily cat is to bring your overgrown cat to Felkrash located in the Port Sarim rat pits. Wily cats are the best rat catchers. They even have the ability to catch butterflies and kalphite larva. If you don’t bring your wily cat hunting it will become a lazy cat. To make a lazy cat wily again, you must train it to catch rats again. Training a cat is not the only thing you can do.
There are special items that may be of interest to you. If you have completed Itchlarin’s Little Helper, you will have access to the Amulet of Catspeak. This allows you to communicate with all cats that you see. The Ring of Charos when it is activated may also be a useful item. It can be obtained by completing the Creature of Fenkenstrain and starting Garden of Tranquillity. By wearing this and talking to Gertrude, you can use the charm function to chose the color of the kitten that you want. Another item that is not really useful is the Cat Training Medal. It can be obtained by killing 100 rats with your cat/kitten before it becomes overgrown. Once you have 100 kills, you can talk to Gertrude for the medal. You can also do things with your cat.
Growing Your cat is not the only thing you can do. You can go to Rat Pits and challenge other players cats to figure out which cat is the better killer. You can Rename your wily/lazy cat by speaking to Felkrash. This requires completion of the Rat Catchers quest. If you need the death runes, you can sell your cat as long as it isn’t a kitten to the citizens of West Ardougne for 100 death runes. The final thing that you can do with your cats is hunt hell rats. After a certain number of kills, your cat will become a hell cat. They have the exact same abilities except that they look different and you will get a different response when talking to them using the amulet of catspeak. You can reverse the effect by feeding the cat milk.
I hope this has convinced you to get a loving pet that will adventure with you where ever you go.
My fiend has two cats, so how do I get two cats?
One of your friend’s cats are overgrown. You can have as many of them as you want. You can only have one kitten, fully grown cat, wily or lazy cat at a time. Also, you may only have one cat following you around at a time.
OKay, I just gave her the purple urgurent, and I’m a non member, how do I get the cat?
To have get a cat, you must be a member. Once you’re a member complete Gertude’s Cat quest to get a kitten. Take that kitten to maggie and she should make it purple. I’m not 100% sure about this but I am sure you already need a cat or kitten to make it purple.

Cats are strange :p
There are times where your cat will wander off, and if you get a message saying you already have a follower, it just means your cat is off somewhere around Runescape, and will return to your inventory, so be sure to keep a space free.
