RuneScape: Two Steps to Success When Solo Merchanting

Solo merchanting is far harder compared to merchanting in a merchant clan, however the profits are far greater. Many players ask me what items are good to solo merch, but the truth is no item is always going to be good to merch. An item I would happily merch one week would become totally useless to merch another. How do you know what to merch then? Simple, study the Grand Exchange chart every day hunting for such items.

Now when studying the charts I make two lists, items which will earn a quick hundred grand and items I would want to double or even triple my money (But take slightly longer).

  •  A good way to look for items which will double your cash are ones which are in the top five percentage drops. These items have have usually been merched by a number of merchant clans at once and now the price is steeply falling. Make a note of them, have a long look at the 180 day chart to see what their lowest drop in price was and also write that down. Continue to do this daily for all the potential items which are dropping in the top five and wait till one of them drops bellow its last lowest drop in price for the last 180 days.

Now providing it has been around twice its current price within the last 90 days then its the prefect time to buy into the item. A very good tip I picked up is that you can only buy so much of an item everyday per slot. So if you are a f2p and have to two slots, spilt your cash evenly between both slots and invest into the item. What price do you pay? I would recommend you pay maximum price, though most people will be selling for minimum, you want as many of these items before the price starts to rise again. At this point still remember you should still be making double your money even if you buy for maximum.

Now don’t be worried if the price of the item still continues to fall a little. As in the next few days it will slow down and level, before rising again. You just have to remember to update your offers every time the GE lowers the maximum price else your offers will become invalid. It can often take weeks, if not months, for an item to double in price but its worth it!

During this time train a skill, such as woodcutting, so you earn a bit of cash on the sideline and gives you something to do. Also try and keep an eye out if any merchant clans start merchanting your item. If they do this will be a great help at making the price rise quickly, though make sure you manage to sell all your items before they do! Be patient and once the price has reached your desired profit sell all your items for the medium market price. Now you can re-start all that researching into doubling your money again and again.

I liked this article. Well written. I’ve already made about a million gp merchanting myself, so I can vouch for the legitimacy of this. Merchanting is a great way to make money, and one of the only skills that involves more brain power than mindless clicking!
