Tactics Arena Online – How to Play, and Win..

Many of you know that strategy game Tactics Arena Online, but play and always lose. Heres how to win, peace of cake. This guide is only for those who are familiar with the guidelines of the game.

Disclaimer: I will only be talking about grey setups here.

The Avatar

One thing I have noticed is when people have their avatar as an orange scout, people are afraid to battle them, but generally put what ever you like. How’s that for a quick tip =P.

The Setup

There are lots of kinds or setups such as turtles, rushes, bombs, flanks, and more, but in my opinion, a turtle is the best kind with a rush being a runner up. In that case, I reccomend a turtle setup with both pyromancers being out of the game.

You can substitute the enchantress or assassin for a pyromancer, which also works, but less effective.

Now, placing the Lightning Ward is really important, as it could easily get killed and form a huge hole in your defensive line with wrong placing, so lets avoid that. I usually place it 3 squares from the end of the battlefield, with the barrier ward 2 squares behind it, left or right dosen’t matter. That way, you can easily zap anyone who wants to enter from your opposite flank-side, and anyone trying to break focus from your barrier ward with melee, as it is in range from the LW from all 4 sides. Alternatively, you can replace the barrier ward for a pyromancer, but that is not reccomended especially in conjunction with the enchantress. The cleric’s best place is in the very back row in the corner.

Needless to say, the knights MUST be up front in order to make a wall for crippling enemy advance right into your area. Which squares you put them in are up to you but the ones above are the best, in my opinion.

I have found that swapping the witch and scout squares is a valid choice also, but frowned upon seeing as though the witch is in so much danger.

Strategy

First of all, you want to decide: Are you gonna go offensive or defensive? Offensive is way better since you can hit where you want instead of where your opponent wants.

Assuming you are gonna go offensive, you should advance your flanking units on your first move, if you are battling opp side turtle vs. turtle. Then if he tries to do the same, you made the first move you should be able to get there faster, he shall retreat. If you do not get the first move, then move your flank pieces up and then focus on warding your enemies off, because they should not get near your flank units with theirs, seeing that they are on totally opposite sides.

If you go against a mage rush (a.k.a bomb), then zap their mage with a LW killing it, if it was in range. This still might not work because they have 4 turns to wreak havok over you with unblockable attacks, with you renderring helpless, or more likely they will destroy your LW leaving a HUGE hole in your defensive lines, which at this point is very hard to cover up. Think of the upside, they probably have no cleric to heal them and even if they do, then he won’t be much help because of the mages low hitpoints, he will be a waste of one unit.

Against a normal rush, it is easier to win, because of less unblockable attackers, which means more blocks on your part. But do remember that the scout is present so try to take him out ASAP, then focus on other units, depending on their dangerousness at that point.

I cannot stress enough that the enchantress is gonna be your best friend after one of those games. Which games? The ones where it is impossible to win, and there is your enchantress saving the day. Your chanty is only gonna take part in 50% of your games, and gonna win those single-handedly 25% of those games. Think of it like this: You have a cleric, BW, scout, assassin, and chanty against 3 knights, and assassin, and cleric. Your scout moves for cover beside the chanty and the knights get lured in to attack it, chanty freezes. 3 turn recovery, and the other knight moves in, close enough for next turn focus-breaking attack. Your form a barrier around your chanty so the knight breaks it’s focus. 1 turn recovery left. You heal, while the oppponent moves up his 3rd knight, 0 turn recovery left on the enchantress. The knight that was close breaks the focus of the enchantress so she repositions herself and freezes both knights. The scout and assassin can pick at the remaining knight and cleric into a victory. All by the chanty, see? I rest my case.

Now, that some strategy is laid out, I want to clear up some Tips:

-You will not win all games, that is a fact, there is always someone better than you.

-Don’t be afraid of how a setup looks, do your best and you should be great.

-An extra cleric against you is not always a bad sign, hence one less attacker.

-Don’t bother trying to kill a knight backed up with two clerics, it’s too hard. Here’s where you are supposed to use your enchantress.

-Try to go after the cleric, first unit. If it’s too hard, then do scout while threating their flank.

Conclusion

Tactics arena online is one of the best, if not THE best, strategy board games out there, and it really develops clear thinking and recognization of situations, and dealing with them. If you think you are experienced enough, then buy gold, and try your hand with those new units like Berzerker and Dragon Tyrant and more. There is a legends server back at DigisOnline but that has been offline since January or February 2009, with no sign of a comeback. If your really want to be a master at this game, try checking out other guides and following what works for you. Good luck!
