Top 10 F2p Mmos of the Now

10 well thought out and somewhat unique Free to play mmorpgs to help people get an idea of whats out there in the free to play world.

Now anyone who is sane and into playing MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing games) type games will tell you that most F2P (free to play) MMOs are not worth your time. Most of them are riddled with Bots and Gold sellers due to the fact that many of them are total Grind fests- a grind fest is a type of game where the only way to Advance is by killing X amount of monsters. Most of the time the leveling curve is so great in these types of games (look to lineage 2 for example) that it may take several weeks or months to advance 1 level at a certain stage in the game. Many people have complained that it takes around 3-5 years to reach Max level in Lineage 2 depending on how much of your time you invest in game.

F2P games are rarely free in the true sense of the word free. Most of them harbor Cash shops- an online store where players can buy different items to make their characters stand out from the rest of the crowd, for example Maple story has 1 of these types of shops.

The following list of games is of cours highly opinionated. I understand that many people will have differing opinions and I hope that they can still use this as a sort of guideline when choosing a game to waste time on.

  1. Maple Story Online.

Now this game is not your typical MMO. It’s a strange mix of the classic Side scrolling games of yesteryear and the magical worlds of the typical MMO of today. Now this game does have a Cash shop but there are no truly useful items that can be bought for your character for 1 main reason. There is absolutely ZERO PvP (player vs. player) content whatsoever. All of the game is PvE (player vs. environment) in other words you spend your time fighting monsters across the Extensive world of Maple Story. Now I must say that before level 30 the game is quite boring. Depending on what class you choose at level 10 (8 for magicians), Warrior, Thief, or magician, you will only have 1-2 useful skills for your class to use in combat. At level 30, 70, and 120 you will advance further into the class you chose gaining more skills and abilities along the way. All in all this game isn’t the most fun you could get on the internet. But it does have the ability to kill time if you give it a chance.

  2. Rohan online

This game is your typical baseline MMORPG, adding further to that I have to say it’s simply generic. I’ve seen the same thing in many other MMOs. Now with that said it can still be a lot of fun if you give it a chance. Rohan Online is a Korean import (aren’t they all?) that hit America and went public early May. The game has 6 Races that are each in themselves a Playable Class. They list as follows: Elf- The priest type class. Human- Warrior type class. Half-elf- Ranger type class. Dark elf- Mage or wizard type class. Dekan- this class is a hybrid of sorts that is hard to describe. You could say they are a mix between a tank, wizard, and assassin. Dahn- Assassin type class. This game can be compared directly to Lineage 2 but with a small fraction of the features. Just know that if you play this game you will spend a majority of your time grinding the same areas for a while. The main feature of this game is the Open world PvP system. Though the mechanics were a bit clunky the excitement was still there. You could be attacked anywhere on the map at anytime. This feature made you watch what you say and do around other people and sort of forced you to respect people who were a much higher level than you were. The worst feature of this game has got to be the grinding and the clunky mechanics.

  3. Angels online

I have to say that this game is incredibly boring and the Soundtrack will put anyone to sleep. I have literally found myself dozing off in front of the computer due to the terrible lullaby like music that this game spews from my speakers when I play. The only reason this game would be worth looking at is 1 very interesting and unique feature called the “Angel Baby”. Now anyone who just likes leveling and watching beautiful skill animations this game is definitely for you. The Angel Baby system is a built in Botting system that allows you to level skills, yourself, and gather materials while away from the computer. The main problem is that the Auto combat system has terrible AI and it’s nearly impossible to do Auto level runs without an ample supply of Healing items and Mana replenishing items. This game most likely WILL NOT hold you for any long periods of time but I have to say that its worth a try simply to experience the legal botting. I thought it was cool anyway.

  4. Requiem online: Bloody mare.

Yet another Grind fest. The only difference for this game is that it has some intense Gore and Violence. The shear grossness of this game is the only thing that sets it apart from all of the other Free MMOs. You will spend your time grinding hours and hours of your time while watching hideous beasts being decapitated and or Cut in half by your character. If gore is your thing and you want to be Cheap then Requiem may be something you will enjoy

  5. Shaiya online

Shaiya online is yet another generic Korean imported MMO. But this one is pretty and has an extensive array of skills for each class. I can’t say I know a whole bunch about this game because I only played to level 25 but the 25 levels I did play through were fun. There was a definite level curve after 25 seeing as it only took me 4-5 days to get to 25 but took me around 2 to get halfway through 25. That being said this is a definite Grinder but its worth playing for a while. The PvP system in this game is Realm vs. Realm. The 2 factions are the Alliance of Light and the Union of Fury. Both have the same class types.

  6. Grenada Espada or Sword of the New World

Both the same game published in different regions.
This game has some of the most beautiful graphics of a free game that I have ever seen in a F2P game. I only played to level 10 but the experience while playing was quite enjoyable. The #1 problem with this game is the fact that it’s such a grind fest and that there is so much Botting and gold selling in the game that it takes away from the grand experience. I’d recommend this game to anyone looking for a somewhat unique experience in the MMO world. The Spell animations are more than beautiful and the same can be said about the over all environments.

  7. Dreamlords: the Reawakening.

This game is quite interesting in the fact that it mixes some of the crucial elements of the standard RTS with the character control of an RPG. Dream lords is still in the closed beta stage but I suggest that anyone looking for a truly unique experience should try dream lords out. The most interesting part of this game is the acquisition of followers through the collection of something called Gnosis. Gnosis is highly important because you NEED followers to advance and develop your Empire. Though the game is still slightly undeveloped it has proven to be quite interesting and complicated enough to keep me interested. The game goes live in mid august so I suggest you try it out.

  8. Pox Nora.

One of the strangest yet most enjoyable games I have played in a long time. Pox Nora proves to be unique but it’s not exactly free. In the beginning it’s almost required that you sign up for at least a 3 month membership ($15 for the 3 months) and buy a few packs of Cards called Nora in the online store. Without buying any Nora packs you can play the game with preconfigured Nora decks. The main problem with this is that the Preconfigured decks are incredibly weak compared to what you can create on your own with some strategic thinking and the fact that the cards you buy and own are enabled to level and grow through points that you allocate on each card to your choosing through a process called forging. The game is very easy to learn but it’s kind of hard to master. If you like RTS and Trading card games Pox Nora could prove to be a fun time for you. Pox Nora’s Card designs are simply stunning. The artistry is vivid and very interesting. The different modes that are available in Pox Nora add a lot of depth to an otherwise shallow game.

  9. Dungeon Runners

Dungeon runners is most definitely the SPOOF of all MMOs. Everything from the Npc and Quest names to the Weapon naming system is a big fun poke at the Fantasy worlds that you find in MMOs. Weather your finding your rainbow label weapons with such labels as……Percio’s enchanted Toilet scrubber or killing monsters with names like flubnub the skuzzy, you will most likely get a good laugh out of the strangeness this game harbors. The PvP is not very good due to the strange controls the PvE is very enjoyable. It is however a Dungeon Grind. This means that you will spend hours upon Hours Fighting through dungeons filled with the same types of monsters and collecting all sorts of various loot. The main problem with this game is that if you don’t decide to pay the optional $5 fee the game is extremely gear. I’d say more than half of the gear available is only useable by paying members and it’s much better than the non member gear of course. Other than that the game is very enjoyable and proves to be a fun time from the minute you start.

  10. Guild wars

Though guild wars requires you to buy one of the campaigns (each costs around $40 usd. And there are 4) the game is most definitely the only Free to play game that has definite re-playability and a stable player base. Though the Gm support is lacking due to NCsoft’s over zealous production of MMOs Guild wars is a must play if you are into intense PVP. Guild wars has 10 different Classes: Warrior, Monk, Mesmer, Elementalist, Necromancer, Ranger, Ritualist, Assassin, Paragon, and Dervish. With the Ritualist and assassin being playable only with the factions campaign and the Paragon and dervish can only be played on the Nightfall campaign. After several quests each player will be given the choice to choose a secondary class. So all in all there are an amazing number of Class combinations and Builds that can be created from each combination.

About 90 if I’m not mistaken. Though through most of the game you will spend your time looking similar if not the same than people of the same class the Armor and weapon skins are very elaborate and ornate. Once you have advanced through the quests and campaign missions there is much more content to keep you well entertained and intertwined with the game’s story and further advance your character. All of the gear for level 20 has the exact same stats for each class excluding the customization that can come from insignias and runes. Though this may seem boring to anyone who has ever played games like WoW which has an extensive array of different types of gear, this feature works to balance the game out like many other games fail to do. The pvp in Guild wars is extremely fun and you are FORCED to be strategic especially, in Alliance battles. The ultimate goal in Guild wars is to make it to the HoH (hall of heroes) with your guild and Collect as much Faction to raise the amount of territory your guild owns. Any gamer looking for an interesting PvE experience and a Fast paced “on your toes” PvP experience should pick up Guild wars.

RuneScape, the Massive Multi player online game by Jagex Ltd is the #1 f2p game on the internet. It is the most successful browser game that ever existed. It is coded with java, so it is a lot faster then other games, it has 15 MILLION active free members, it comes in English, French, German, and soon Brazilian Portuguese. It requires no download, it has a p2p version of the game, it has 100+ quests, 24 skills, four updates a month in between upgrades (2009 only) and in March 2009, Mechscape will be released as Jagex’s second mmo. And btw, Guild Wars is b2p (buy to play) not f2p or p2p.

“Though the Gm support is lacking due to NCsoft’s over zealous production of MMOs”

ArenaNet made GuildWars and they do take care of their game. NCsoft is only the publisher.

All I can say is…where\’s Fiesta at? I\’ve been playing Fiesta for 2 years and I have yet to switch to another MMO. Anyways, I highly recommend anyone to play Fiesta. Great MMO, lot of friendly people. Always things to do. Before anyways says anything, no you are NOT required to pay for anything. That decision is entirely up to you. I\’ve enjoyed my experience in Fiesta and met a lot of great people :) Lots of quests, instance dungeon, item enhancement, lots of rare items, bosses, etc.
