Poker Terms. A’s
A large selection of poker related slang and table talk. I will be doing them alphabetically, and so here are all the A’s I can think of!
Poker terms for new players.
A’s.
ABC.
Predictable player. Someone who follows and recognisable pattern in terms of strategy and hardly ever changes gears.
Ace High.
A hand in which the highest card is an aces, with no pair or higher ranking combination of cards. And Aces High beats King High and Queen High, but is beaten by 2-2 or better.
Ace in the Hole.
A concealed ace dealt face down in a players hand.
Ace Magnets.
Pessimistic slang for a pair of kings as your hole cards in Texas Hold’em. So called because of the chance of an Ace to appear on the board when holding this hand, and therefore giving someone the only possible pair that can beat you.
Aces and Spaces.
A five card hand containing a pair of aces and three rag cards.
Aces Full
A full house made up of three aces and another pair.
Aces Over.
1. Aces Up.
2. Aces Full.
Aces Up.
Two pairs, one of which is a pair of aces.
Act.
The choice whether to check, fold, call or raise during the betting round. “It’s your turn to act”.
Action.
1. The game with a lot of action is one in which players frequently bet, raise and re-raise.
2. The turn of a player to act.
Active.
1. A hand is still in contention for the pot.
2. A player whose hand is still in contention for the pot.
Add-on.
An additional purchase of supplementary chips made just before the end of the rebuy period of a tournament.
Advertise.
Showing a bluff, in order to receive action when holding a winner.
A-game.
1. The game played by a player at the top of his ability.
Ahead.
To be in profit during a session.
Air.
1. To inform an opponent of your intention to draw a certain number of cards during a game of lowball draw, in order to influence their play.
2. To expose your hand inadvertently.
Ajax.
In Hold’em, ace-jack as your hole cards.
Alien card.
A card from another deck different to the one in play.
All Black.
Referring to a flush made up of either spades or clubs.
All Red.
Referring to a flush made up of either diamonds or hearts.
All In.
To bet all of ones chips in a single hand.
American Airlines.
Slang for a pair of aces
Ammunition.
Slang for chips. So called because the more chips you have the better game you can play.
Anna Kournikova.
Slang for AK as your pocket cards in Texas Hold’em.
Ante.
A mandatory opening bet made by all players at a table before any cards are dealt.
Ante Off.
An ante paid by a player while absent from the table.
Ante Up.
To pay an ante.
Any two Cards.
Phrase constantly reiterated by desperate players, meaning “any two cards can win”.
Athos.
Slang of A10 as your pocket cards in Texas Hold’em.
Automatic Bet.
A bet made in a situation in which the bettor is very unlikely to win, and is likely to be bluffing.
Auto-Post.
A feature in most online card rooms which allows all mandatory bets such as blinds to be posted automatically whenever it is ones turn to do so.
Axe.
The cut taken by the casino or card club.
