Age of Empires 2 is almost ten years old but still very players online and offline. What makes this game so cool and unique that people can’t stop playing it?
This article will only show you the best civilizations and strategies to make your enemies go to the place where they came from.
The best civilizations are the Byzantines and the Teutons. If you noticed they are the only ones that say defensive in the unique bonus description. That’s because of their unique tech and abilities.
The Byzantines’ monks can heal twice as far making them very useful to heal people outside the walls without being killed. They also have cheaper counter units and that’s really cool. They have one super disadvantage, they don’t allow you to research Blast Furnace which cuts 2 attack from all units. Finally their unique unit is the only one with attack bonus against infantry.
The Teutons on the other hand have the second most powerful unit in the entire game, the Teutonic Knight. This guy has so much armour that most attacks will inflict only one of damage to him. The amount of health he has makes him almost unstoppable, like a walking tank. Most people don’t know how to counter this unit. The truth is you can counter it easily with bombard towers and Janissary. Most people don’t know it.
What’s the strategy? If you are going to attack you need only your unique units if you are the Teutons with the help of towers and castles. Don’t bother building anything or anyone else. If the enemy comes with archers or horses you can counter them with castles.
If you are playing with the Byzantines you should build only Catrapacths and camels. They alone are more than enough to beat any army combination.
Bombard towers are the most important construction you can build. Since the strongest units are very slow the bombard tower can’t miss them. Protect them with walls or cavalry like Paladins.
If you are playing with a friends then the game is already won. There is no way to defeat the Byzantines and the Teutons. They are invincible unless you don’t know how to play with them.
I like this game! we used to play it with kids over the network and had a lot of fun!

You really dont know wht you are talking about…… i could beat you with any civ in the game! a game like aoe2 goes through years of testing before it is released. Why would they include the other civs if they were pointles??? They wouldnt!!! every civ has advantages and as long as u play to those advantages any civ can beat any civ and it comes down to the player. some civs have the advantage on certain maps but no 1 civ (or 2 civs) rule any map. The most commonly used civ on most land maps is the huns because they have an extremely powerful feudal rush and the most common water civ is vikings because they have various water bonuses but once more i stress if u play other races properly they can still be just as effective.
ps. your byzantine army would get owned if a saracen simply made some elite mamelukes which totaly destroy cavalry. or even if any civ that has fully upgradeable camels (which are anti cav) because they would kill the cataphracts (byzantine unique unit) and because the byz dont get blast furnace there camels are weak and would lose to any other races fully upgraded ones!!!!!!!!!
The muffin man, you forgot that Bizantines have monks that heal twice as far, this means inside a fortress they can give you serious advantage. Mamelukes can be easily killed with cavalary archers or foot archers because of the xtensive range,
in age2 you cannot build a foretress against a half decent player the game is decided in the feudal and castle age. Monk healing in general is way over rated and compared to many other civ bonuses its very insignificant. mamelukes are made to bakup seige onagers which tear apart all those other ranged units such as cav archers or foot archers and the mame’s protect the onagers from cavalry. and try puting 60 arbalest vs 40 elite mame’s im pretty sure if controled properly the mame’s will domonate.
Mamelukes are easily killed by the Onager. Sure they have pretty good health, but they stand in the perfect position to be slammed by these machines. Do not forget they can be killes with Towers too, they have many more Hitpoints than all other Civs.
enemy onagers will get owned by your own seige onagers and your onagers shouldnt kill many mame’s because they normally stay behind the onagers waiting for enemy cavalry. just stop tryin to argue this because you clearly have very little online experience with this game.

well your clearly an idiot if u think this thread is even remotely right in telling u byzantines an teutons are the best civs…. i thought the same thing before i started playin the game online and realised just how diverse this game is.
I see you think you are a real player. Your not. I am game retired now. At 21 being my own boss life starts to get tough. Maybe and I say maybe, one day I might kick you with the Teutons, you will see how good I really am. Oh, and I will also use the Byzantines and YOU WILL use the Saracens like you told above.

You are the worse player here. With a good set of Bombard towers, only the Trebuchets could stand a chance but only if well defended, something it’s piece of cake to counter with Onagers and Cavaliers

^^^^ AGREED. and how the hell are u going to last long enough to build a “good set of Bombard towers” u will be dead before imp age. But even if u do get them up i will just go around them and kill your villagers and if u waste all your stone building towers u wont be able to get many castles so u wont be able to produce many cataphracts. and the best counter for bombard towers in my opinion is actually bombard cannons because they are also effective at taking out any onagers or other units defending them.
They’ve already played. Muffin couldn’t get around to killing the villies cause redburn actually had troops guarding and castles. In the end byzantines had too much hp and the saracens couldn’t protect the siege to take them out.
I believe Mamelukes DON’T get ANY/reduced bonuses vs cataphracts. So mamelukes would probably lose. Given the bonuses byzantines has, I would bet that if things got into late game, Byz would win. If early on, Saracens might (depends how much damage Saracens does).

First of all, all Civilizations are equal, it just depends on how you use them. Secondly, I do agree bombard towers are useful only IF YOU HAVE WALLS IN FRONT OF THEM AND HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GO IMPERIAL AND BUILD THEM BEFORE YOU GET RUSHED!!!

One last thing, if you use the Teutons you can just aid them with horses and Muf you have no chance to beat this.
ok u have fun spamming paladins and tuetonic knights and see how fast you run out of gold. plus the big weakness of the tuetons is the fact that they dont get light cavalry or hussar so they have no cheap cavalry that they can spam. your besat option in my opinion is to use skirmishers and tuetonic knights so that the skirms can take out the archers that are killing your tuet knights. Dont get me wrong i think the tuetons are a great civilisation just not when used in the way described in this thread. And all im saying is whoever wrote this thread is a total fool and has never played against good players online. And also all the civs are equal and the tuets an byzantines are not ahead of any other civ
i should also probably mention that the best army build is going to differ depending on the army you are facing

Voobly is the site with built client for AOE2 players; a fan made program (former igzones). Just google it. It includes ladders, rating system, anticheat etc.

And btw, there is no such thing as a best civ, the game is very balanced. You won\’t have the chance to spam bombard towers with good players. In an 1v1 byza war players would go pikes and skirms in feudal, you wont make it to imperial. Online experienced players drush, flush, trush, rush, grush, smush and so on. I used to say byza is the best too when i played offline, but found this totally untrue when i started playing online heavily. Huns are maybe the most used civ on land game. They attack in feudal like crazy. Mongols too. Don\’t think that you\’ll get the chance to get in imperial and start making army then in online matches. All the civs are good. Turst me, if you think byza or teuts are the strongest because you play until IMP and then start making fully upgraded army, then you are very noob at this game. Sure, they got Catas which are immune to any anti cav bonus from pikes and camels etc and rape infantry, but making enough fully upgraded cataphracts costs time, a lot of resourses, castles, time in which you will be attacked; or you need to help your allies who might be overwhelmed. And suppose you do get lots of catas, enemy just makes bunch of arbaletists, micro them tight and you lose all your cats and camels. Same with BBT (bombard towers), costs time and resources. They can be used in 2v2 maps like michi, otherwise you don\’t usually get the chance to spam them unless the match is very balanced and takes very long. Watch experts recorded games and see how you really play this game. Just google for aoe2 2000 rated recorded games. You would be surprised of how complex this game is. 1v1 games may be over in less than 20 minutes.
AOE2 is a micro and macro gem.
