Realm of Empires &Ndash; Strategy Game Review

A review of the Facebook strategy game Realm of Empires.

Do you enjoy online games but don’t have much time to play?  I have never really understood the fascination with games that take up so much of one’s time that they sit in front of the computer for hours on end.  Typically, these are strategy games of one sort or another.  I personally know a few people who sit in front of their computer monitors for hours at a time, day after day, absorbed and completely submerged in some enchanted, far-away world.

Recently, I discovered such a game that takes only a few minutes per day and is quite fun to play.  The game is called Realm of Empires (RoE) and their website is located at http://www.realmofempires.com.  RoE is a Facebook game where players start out with a small village and attempt to grow it into an empire.  A Facebook account is required to play the game.  The idea is to get your Facebook friends to participate and help you grow your empire by joining your clan, although anyone with a Facebook account may join your clan.

There are many different playing strategies.  The best one seems to be to build up your treasury as quickly as possible because silver is needed for just about everything you do in the game.  It is also important to recruit troops to protect your village and attack others.  In the beginning of the game, rewards (silver) are a little more easily obtained as you proceed through the beginners tutorial.  After the tutorial, silver is obtained by attacking neighboring villages.  Points are earned by constructing and updating various buildings in your village.  The goal is to get far enough to build your palace, hire governors and send them on military campaigns to take over as many villages as possible.

Players start as merchants and, as the game progresses, promotions and new titles are earned.  Currently (at the time of this writing), my title is Grand Knight and my next promotion will be to that of Baronet.  I have only been playing for a couple weeks and I have already built my palace.  I am in the process of obtaining enough silver to hire a governor who will be sent to take over another village, adding to my small empire.

I have had a lot of fun playing RoE and I encourage everyone to give it a try.  While you’re at it, you might want to consider joining my clan, Kuya Clan, located in the realm at Kuya Village (-303, -161).
