Five Games Like Runescape (for Free)

Five alternatives to Jagex’ most popular game. [updated]

Now that Runescape is considered the most popular MMORPG by Guiness World Records, it’s time to clear your heads onto some different, yet similar games that will rock your world if Runescape’s getting boring, or you just need a fresh new one to play.

Keep in mind that some will require a good graphics card, but nothing top knotch, don’t worry. I also won’t rank them, I will put them into a random order, will describe them a bit and put a screenie. I hope you enjoy.

Runes of Magic

This one can be considered the free World of Warcraft. It is very similar to it in art-style and gameplay, and some similarities are noticeable in the game world as well. Instead of monthly payments, the game works on micro transaction system (players can buy game items for real life money from the official store, gaining some advantage, but they can be acquired  later in the game without paying any kind of real life money. Basically someone pays to get items faster), which makes sure the servers are intact. The gameplay, as I said, is much like WoW, so if you want a free option or want to try out how WoW is, it’s a good bet. Just make sure your card is 128MB with support for Pixel Shader 2.0, because otherwise, you won’t be able to play.

ROSE Online Evolution

This one shares a great feel with RoM, and although it may seem childish or immature, I assure you it’s lots of fun in an anime-ish art style. Simple gameplay, huge game world (7 different planets), fighting is a lot of fun, and casting skills is as well. You can pick one of four jobs at level 10, which are the usual soldier, ranger, mage and crafter. When you reach level 100 (will take a while, but you’ll have fun playing), you can turn into one of two inside your class. Take the soldier, for example, when you reach level 100, you can choose to become an offensive type, or a defensive type, and all that makes it even more immersive. There are PvP areas, which are lots of fun for high levels, it’s 3d without requiring much of your graphics card (64MB will do it) and it’s just uber pwnage, trust me.

Dragon Fable

Here is something for those whose computers can’t handle the more advanced ones. This is free roaming in 2d, impressibly well done. I, for one, could not think free roaming in 2d could work so well, but it does. You’ll have loads of fun fighting, you can have a party, and it won’t lag at all. It’s addictive, that’s for sure. It could be better done, but it is addictive. Most zones are single player, but you can also go onto PvP areas and fight the hell out of other players. Quests are repetitive, since they are all about killing monsters, but well, fighting is enjoyable. You’ll love all your boss fights, and the game is full with humor. Everywhere there is a small joke, which is great, and I think some games are missing on it. Some features are limited to people that bought a dragon amulet, which is a one time payment for unlimited access to the game. Overall, it’s fun. For some people it’s brilliant while for others it gets boring. It’s definitely worth a try though.

Dungeons and Dragons Online

This one has gone free this summer, after some years of being paid. It has great graphics and is popular. And it’s based off Dungeons and Dragons… Seriously, that’s a name every game would like to have, and although I haven’t tried this, I am probably going to guess it has great quests, fun dungeons, and by the screenie, it’s going to take some requirements to play. If you love D&D, this summer you’ll have the chance to try it out. I am personally going to try it as soon as it goes live, if my graphics card lets me.

Dungeon Runners

From NCSoft, the creators of Lineage 2 and the soon-to-be-released Aion: Tower of Eternity, comes a Koren style free MMORPG. Dungeon Runners is fun, it’s not heavy, and it’s considered to be one of the best in its gender, free or not, which is saying something. It’s a classic RPG, with classes and all that, but since it’s asian styled, you can expect a lot of grinding. It also has some similarities with Runescape, so be sure to try it out.

Other Games

Since it’s hard to pick just 5 games out of them all, be sure to consider these as well: Cabal Online, Rappelz, Metin2, Dofus, AdventureQuest, Mechscape, Mechquest, Fly for Fun, Granado Espada and Perfect World.

nice article, but the only thing these games have in common with the rune is that they are free online rpgs. Runescape in unique because you don’t have a class and you level skills, rather than a leveling a character. Runescape also has full loot pvp, unlike any of the above games. Runescape is actually most similar to games like eve online, ultima online, darkfall online, and soon to come: mortal online.

no offense here publisher, but are you stupid or just trying to be annoying?

you haven’t actually listed a single game similar to runescape…

the only game i’ve seen similar to it, is Eternal Lands, another oldie game.

in your very first suggestion, you even state… it plays like WoW… so your 5 similar games to runescape is actually 5 similar games to WoW right? muppet -.-
