Guild Wars Two – The Next Big MMO?
Guild Wars two is a new highly anticipated online roleplaying game being released soon this year. It has tremendously grown in popularity over the past few months and sold out with preorders. But will it beat hugely successful games such as World of Warcraft and become the next big MMO?
Guild Wars 2 is the sequel to the ever popular Guild Wars online roleplaying game. The original Guild Wars was very successful and, unlike most other MMORPGs, did not require a monthly subscription fee to play. As a result, it became very popular as soon as it debuted in 2005, and went on to release many expansions. Guild Wars had very competetive PvP (Player vs. Player) gameplay, and it became further popularised because of this.
Guild Wars 2 is no different in this aspect. It retains the original Guild Wars pricing model, which would indicate many expansions will be released, earning money for the developers and keeping the players happy and with things to do. Guild Wars 2 will also focus heavily on PvP, and it is much more skill based than ever before, with the ability to dodge incoming attacks and aim with many abilities, rather the more simplistic auto-attack mechanics integrated in many other MMORPGs. Skill and strategy plays an important part in Guild Wars 2, and gear or level is not an issue in many of the game’s PvP modes, as in Guild Wars 2 PvP, all players are set to max level and given all the skills and gear they need to meet their opponents on even terms.
Moreover, the game boasts beautiful graphics, massive dungeons, which are divided into exploration or story modes, and a unique dynamic event system, built to be scalable and encourage group play! The huge game world in Guild Wars 2, unlike in other games, is a living world, filled with thousands of dynamic events which you will encounter during the course of your adventures. As stated on the offical Guild Wars 2 website, for example, “One day there may be a thriving village filled with vendors and townspeople, the next day that village may be a smoking ruin overrun by centaurs.”
But will Guild Wars 2 become more successful than WoW? Will it become home to more players than World of Warcraft’s 11 million or so? It is hard to say, and not easy to predict. In all likelihood, this will not happen, at least not for a few months after Guild War’s 2 release. However, the Guild Wars 2 pre-order sales have been incredibly high, and the recent beta-weekend saw a huge number of players wanting to try out the game. Surely this reflects a large interest in the game, and implies that Guild Wars 2 will be very successful; but to beat WoW’s numbers, this just may not cut it.
What do you think? How successful, or unsuccessful do you think Guild Wars 2 will be, and do you think it will be able to overcome World of Warcraft’s impressive numbers, among other games? Leave a comment below!
