MMORPGs: The Thing I Hate to Love
MMORPGs are a type of game that I see as both a blessing in the gaming community and the most evil scheme ever created by those nasty game companies.
For those that don’t know a MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) is a game played over the Internet involving hundreds to millions of players. An RPG (Role Playing Game) is a game where you have a character role (space explorer, elf mage etc). Together they create game with huge open worlds with an almost never ending amount of content, friends to play with and constant updates. Yes some of them can create jobless, friendless social retards that honestly believe that the game is real but thankfully that doesn’t happen too much. (as far as I know) They seem to be almost perfect but if you want one that isn’t full of bugs and gets lot of new stuff all the time then you hit the big problem. Monthly Fees. The evil scheme created by some nasty man to drain the life from you wallet.
I know companies have to make money somehow but couldn’t the one off purchase that works so well with other games be applied to MMOs (Guild Wars does this but Guild Wars is….eh not my style to put it one way), add in donations and micro-transactions (using real money to buy in-game money and items) and I’m sure they could be profitable.
What MMOs have I played? I played Runescape for while but eventually I got bored and the monthly fee wasn’t worth it. I also played Star Wars Galaxies for a few months but the monthly fee was just too much to make it worthwhile. I have look for a good MMORPG but every time I find one it has £10 a month price tag that sends me packing. As far as free MMOs go I’ve yet to find one that ticks all the boxes like the Pay to Play ones do.
Maybe there will never be an amazing MMO that doesn’t have monthly fees but I can always hope. (or if you know a good MMO without monthly fees please say in a comment and stop keeping it all too yourself!)
