The Reason Behind Monthly Fees
Why certain games have monthly fees.
A monthly fee is what keeps the game running. Without it, the game wouldn’t survive. The developers need to pay their workers, and the cost of maintaing the servers. Some games, don’t have a monthly fee. Why? Mainly because they have another mean on getting money. Take MapleStory, for example, it is a 2-D side-scrolling MMORPG, run by Wizet and Nexon. MapleStory has a ‘Cash Shop.’ A shop that allows you to buy unique in game items, for the cost of real currency. It’s not often you see a game that requires no real money to play at all (No Cash Shop, or monthly fee.)
There are some games (ex. Guild Wars) that only require you to buy the box. With Guild Wars, you buy the box, and you can play for free. There are a few downsides to monthly fees: If you forget to play for a few months, you have been spending money on a game you aren’t even paying, and if you are tight on cash, your gaming choices are limited. A monthly fee is not all bad, and not all good.
