Guild Wars 2

Fans of the hugely successful Guild Wars franchise have been eagerly awaiting the release of Guild Wars 2 which is currently under development by ArenaNet. Guild Wars 2 will draw from the game mechanics that made the original Guild Wars one of the most popular online games ever and will add a fully persistent world. It was also revealed that, like its predecessors, Guild Wars 2 will not have a subscription fee.

ArenaNet has promised fant that Guild Wars 2 will defy MMO conventions and create a new kind of game – free from boring grind and static, unchanging worlds.

“Let’s say a village is being terrorized by bandits. You don’t want to find out about that because there’s a villager standing there motionless with an exclamation mark over his head who says when you click on him, “Help, we’re being terrorized by bandits.” You want to find out like you would in GW2: because the bandits are attacking, chasing villagers through the streets, slaying them and setting their houses on fire. You can stand up for the villagers, or you can watch their village burn to the ground and then deal with the consequences. We’ve worked hard to create a living, dynamic world for you, where there’s always something new to do.” – Mike O’Brien, co-founder and president of ArenaNet

As the makers of the current top MMORPG in the market, World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment’s every action is closely watched by the gaming press and MMORPG fans. When a job listing that mentioned a new game was published in 2007, speculation ran rampant and has not abated since. Not many details are forthcoming about Titan, called a “next gen MMO,” because Blizzard is keeping the project under wraps for now.

“Without giving away any details, we have some of our most experienced MMO developers, people who spent years working on the World of WarCraft team, working on this project,” said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. “We’re really trying to leverage all the lessons we learned through the years. Some of which we were able to address in World of WarCraft and others that maybe because of the design decisions we’ve made, you just can’t address. So we’re kind of taking a step back with all that knowledge to make something that’s completely new and fresh. We’re not trying to make a WoW sequel.” In fact, he explained that the two titles will co-exist in the future.
