Star Wars Galaxies: A Worthy Mmo. Returning to Glory?
It has been quite a few years since this classic MMO lost many of its subscribers to the NGE update. Has this critically acclaimed Star Wars game recovered in quality?
OK, so just incase you hadn’t heard, there’s already a Star Wars MMO out on the market called “Star Wars: Galaxies.” Released in the early 00’s, SWG was critically acclaimed for its deep and unique combat system. The game allowed the player to mix and match the many available character classes into your own unique hybrid class, as your character developed over time. While this game setup was known to be extremely satisfying, Sony (the company in charge of the game) saw the deep combat system to be too complex for younger players. Thus, Sony chose to “upgrade” the game, by making it a much easier affair, along the lines of “World of Warcraft.” The drastic changes caused by this update caused much uproar among the player base, and caused subscription numbers to plummet.
So here I am, 5 years later, reluctant to try out my ruined, old, favorite game, and to my surprise, the game no longer sucks. Sure, that wonderfull sense of control over my character is gone, but the game has certainly been well molded into a completely new level based MMO.
SWG no longer feels completely half ass-ed. Almost every aspect of the game has been polished into fun and working content. Sure, space still lacks a punch, and animations are poorly executed, but there is now once again some quality fun to be had with SWG.
The game’s crafting system is still in superb shape, and pvp is still a rush. All in all, SWG is a truely genuine game after all of this time. The 13ish planets are still vast and lush, and have plenty of cool places to visit. Instanced events are now a fun part of game. My personal favorite instance, is when you have to fly up into space and sneak into a pirated Star Destroyer along with you friends, to gain control over the ship.
Wrapping things up: SWG is deffinately worth a second look, and even better: a new first look.
