10 Things World of Warcraft Teaches You

What can WoW teach you?

Although World Of Warcract ( WoW ) is a highly addicting game, it actually teaches you alot of things that schools cannot.

Many people brush off the idea that they are learning in any MMORPG, let alone one of the most popular. But what can WoW help you with? Let’s take a look at some of the advantages of being a World of Warcraft player.

Number 10: Typing Skills

In this day and age, a good typing and spelling skill is a must for communication. World Of Warcraft requires alot of button pressing alone, but when you are in a guild, it becomes a must to type out messages quickly, assuming you do not have a ventrilo server, in order to communicate during a raid, instance, or boss.
The more you play, the faster you learn which key is where, and the faster you type. True, you might begin shortening phrases, such as “lol”, but as long as you keep that type of communication out of work and school, you should be fine.

Number 9: Math

World of Warcraft actually seemed like it was cleverly designed to force players into doing math alot- simple and advanced. Players must constantly be thinking of these things when buying new gear- If 2 Attack Power is equal to 1 Strength, will I have more DPS with a 100 AP item or a 48 Strength item? Furthermore, if I have a talent that increases my strength by 5%, would I still get more out of AP?
All of this math will lead to you learning and being able to quickly calculate in your head without paper. Clever, Blizzard.

Number 8: Handling Money

This game is, strangely enough, one of the most realistic stock-market simulation i’ve seen. Prices on items will increase and decrease depending on the demand, and players will have to adjust to this. Most importantly, players will eventually learn that spending some money on alot of objects is not as good as spending alot of money on an incredibly good item. This encourages players to save up money, and only use it when needed.

Number 7: Friendship Skills

World of Warcraft is heavily focused on group work in many spots, and having friends at these moments is good. Although you can make friends just by helping them out, you’ll soon develop much better relationship skills not only in-game, but also in real life.

Number 6: Nerd Talk

Okay, maybe this doesn’t belong in the list, but I think that it’s pretty good. Have you ever come up to a group of people, and suddenly, they ask “Do you play World of Warcraft?”. You might say yes just to shut them up, but then they continue “Oh my gosh! Whats your DPS? Have you ever gone into VH? It’s loot is sooo OP!”. Okay, so this doesn’t happen really, but if it does, it’s good to know some WoW-specific and Universal internet-talk.

Number 5: Fairness

Being in a guild means you have to split up everything fairly. You won’t roll need if you don’t need it, and only greed if you care about it at all. Make sure everybody gets a chance, and roll before doing anything special. This is an example of getting young players to understand the concept of being fair, and it does quite a good job at it.

Number 4: History

Although World of Warcraft really doesn’t have an accurate portaying of history, it does have alot of subtle facts and greek myths build into it. It also gives a good portayal of how life was- everything wanted to kill you, and everyone wanted to kill them. Huh.

Number 3: Random Info From Chats

The chats in World of Warcraft are not always completely idiotic- in fact, alot of them talk about stuff you might not know, or are learning. You can truely learn alot by paying attention to intelligent conversations amoung players.

Number 2: Coding

Okay, so this really doesn’t apply to everyone- neither does the #1 slot, but a good number of people come into WoW expecting to do alot of addons and mods. You’ll need to learn coding languages to do these, and learning one of those is incredibly good for you and could help you later in life.

Number 1: IRL Finances

This again does not apply to everyone, but for the younger ones, you might have to work for this game. That means you’ll be taught respect and dicipline, and help around the house. Older players could cut 15$ from their paycheck at work, or even do some side-jobs like mowing the lawn for the money.
Although you won’t become obsessed with saving all the money- It’s only 15$ a month – It will teach you how to work for money, and will definatly help you in the future.
