How do you deal with drama in your World of Warcraft guild?

If people start getting offended at the most inocuous things, or start becoming angry for seeminly random reasons, you have to put a stop to it early before it spreads. Start by simply talking to them. Their grievances might be real. Keep calm and find out the facts of the matter. Always listen to both sides, and innocent bystanders if they wish to get involved. Do this all in private whispers so no one is embarassed and so the drama can’t spread more.

If the drama has to do with a romantic entanglement, it becomes more delicate. Yes, people who play World of Warcraft often start flirting with each other and even cybering (having cyber sex). One person in the couple might think it’s more serious than the other. One person may flirt with everyone “just for fun” while the other thinks they are in an actual relationship. If the issue bleeds over into real life, it might be better to just say “not in my guild” and shut the people down or kick them out.

Kicking people out of your World of Warcraft (or other MMO) guild is always a good solution for the worst drama queens and kings. If talking doesn’t work, and they can’t be convinced to calm down and act reasonably, just remove them. Prepare for backlash. People who like drama and trolling will announce to public trade chat that the gulid master sleeps with goats and all the members are big meanie-pants who hate him. Most of this stuff is laughed off and you shouldn’t worry about it.

The reasons people start drama in online games are widely varied. Some do it for fun, or to see how far they can get. Others are genuinely troubled people. When dealing with it, always remember you don’t have to put up with it. World of Warcraft is supposed to be fun, including the social aspect of it. If it ceases to be fun, do what it takes to make it fun again.
