Swtor – Did It Live Up to Hype?

I have had a chance to play SWTOR for over a month now. Did it live up to the hype?

Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR), Bioware’s first and very ambitious Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMO), has been out for over a month, and people still flood the servers. The game was extremely hyped and everyone believed it would “kill” the king of MMOs, World of Warcraft (WoW). Did SWTOR manage to pull off what everyone thought it was going to?

One thing SWTOR did extremely well that no other MMO could accomplish was immerse the player in a very deep and exciting storyline. Each of the 8 different classes in the game had a unique storyline, so playing through each of the eight classes would get you the full storyline of SWTOR. Even the sidequests each had their stories, fully voiced and all. You can also make choices during the story that would affect your companions affection for you, and/or give you dark/light side points.

However, the story is the only point where SWTOR feels innovative for an MMO. The combat, quests, gear, raids, and pretty much everything else felt like it was taken from other MMOs. That of course isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It seemed Bioware decided to take all the good elements of various MMOs and implement it in SWTOR in their own way. The finished product is extremely polished (with some bugs at launch like all MMOs) and very fun to play, especially with friends. That being said, other than the story, there were no particular parts of the game that felt new or different than any other MMOs. Can SWTOR still “kill” World of Warcraft? Time will tell.

    Nice Article.
SWTOR was indeed super hyped, which was my main reason for not playing in the first place. though now I may have to check it out. I am a Runescape guy personally, always have been always will be. Though I do believe that now that swtor is here it will remain forever. Why? Because Star Wars will NEVER die. For example, its been how long since Star Wars came out, and we’re still playing games about it, talking about it, and making fan content of it.
I look forward to playing swotr now, may you have a great day ILIKEP2S.

Runescape is definitely a good game. I also believe SWTOR will be here forever, even though it doesn’t have as much lasting appeal like games such as RS and WoW. In SWTOR’s case it feels as though once I play through all 8 classes, there won’t be much there to keep me from looking toward a new game.
