WoW Cataclysm Raid Tactics – 10man Magmaw
Tactics to help down the boss Magmaw on its 10 man version in the raid Blackwing Descent.
This ends the trash leading up to magmaw. For our attempts, we use 1 tank, 3 healers and 6 dps. However there is a separate and sometimes considered to be easier tactic that will be discussed later. I play a mage as a main, and for this fight I find that the most intensive job is the healer’s job. There is alot of AoE damage happening, as well as periods of large spike damage on the main tank, and considerable movement involved with our tactic at least. However, once practiced, it is a solid and easy fight to contend with.
Melee: The melee damage isn’t really a major concern in this fight until later on.
Lava Spew: Raid wide AoE hitting everyone for about 18-21k fire damage. Resistance totems/aura’s should always be in use.
Magma Spit: Single target fire damage of about 30-40k. Both of these fire attacks are uninteruptible.
Lava Pillar: The defining move of this fight. A patch of fire will appear on the ground, giving you literally 2-4 seconds to move away from it. Afterwards a literal pillar of fire will spawn, knocking anyone inside into the air and causing about 22-24k damage. It also then spawns a number of Lava parasites, who must be AoE’d down as fast as possible, because if they reach about melee range to their target, they will cause you to become infected, which will make you spawn a full HP parasite on you. Lava pillar occurd every 30 second, so parasites need to be dealt with fast.
Mangle: Periodically Magmaw will mangle the tank causing massive damage every few seconds. Cooldowns should be saved for this. The tank will also be eaten, unable to do anything, and recieve a 50% armor reduction debuff, so heals need to be big.
Ignition: Steam will cover half the room, and after a few seconds Magmaw will slam himself onto that half, causing a large amount of damage to anyone caught inside. Avoid this. Do be aware that this can occur whilst parasites are alive.
In phase 2, undefined by a health %, Magmaw will slump forward, allowing melee dps to use the spikes nearby to jump on his head. This grants the constricting chains ability which needs to be spammed. If done correctly, Magmaw will be impaled on the spike, and be unable to do anything and take 100% increased damage. This is the burn phase, the heroism phase, and a good time for healers to regen mana as nobody in the raid will take damage.
