The Sims Three

A personal review of The Sims three after its launch and in comparison The Sims 2.

The creators of the Sims 3 have done a phenomenal job expanding the lives of the beloved sims that players create. Now one can carry on the life of a child and leave the parents to take care of themselves while the town and sims continue to age. The new sim world is a diverse place full of new and exciting things to do such as look for meteorites, search for new and rare seeds, explore the catacombs in the cemetery, fish for sharks and various fish in the ocean, lakes and ponds of the community and establish new friendships with many people in the community through work or recreation.

Yet while the Sims 3 has wonderful new qualities and aspects I have been rather displeased with it overall. Expecting to have unlimited customization I found that in areas the customization was extremely lacking. The appearance of the sims is disturbing as well, their doughy unnatural appearance is appalling considering the extreme detail and clarity in all other aspects of the game. The hair as well is unsatisfactory, while the unlimited color customization is wonderful and very exciting the styles are frustratingly out of style and to be frank ugly.

To amend this problem I have scoured the internet in search of a remedy to the sims appearances. I began by investing money into the Sims 3 Store only to be relatively disappointed. While the new objects and building aspects I bought were a delightful addition to the game, the hair bought was placed in a deceiving way when viewed. Hoping that the new female hair I had purchased was a fashionable style I, with good faith and excitement, quickly logged onto the game and adjusted the appearance of my favorite female sim only to be thoroughly disappointed. Yet what made me upset was the fact that EA had advertised the hair in a way that made it appear as if it was something else making me question and distrust the store. I did, however, enjoy the clothing options and again the new objects and sets.

Another frustration I have with the game is that it appears that many of the custom content creators have had issues creating content, which in the Sims 2 did not appear to be as big of an issue as it is with its sequel. The Sims 2 and the original Sims was always a place where players could express their own creativity and download others additions to the sim world easily, and the game was designed so that it would be easy for even the noobs to add custom content. Yet in the Sims 3 that does not appear to be the case. While I am not personally a creator or modder I have found that custom content seems to be lacking and have found through forums that creators are having difficulties adjusting the appearances of the beloved doughy sims. Oddly enough modders have seemed to have very little issue adjusting the game to a more desired outcome. I have found that Mod the Sims has many new entries every day and mainly from modders adjusting the way the game functions.

While I know that over time the game will most likely meet my high expectations I found that the Sims 2 is more aesthetically pleasing and in comparison with its prequel was such a stunning transformation of the sims. Overall I expected more from the Sims 3, while it has many great qualities I do have to say that EA needs to add much more to the game for it to ever rival the way the Sims 2 expanded the sims world.
