Black Ops Tips: Best Perk Lineup

A series meant to help readers understand Call of Duty: Black Ops better and get the edge on their opponents utilizing elements of the game and a tactical mindset.

Perks are an extremely powerful part of recent Call of Duty games including Black Ops, it is something that separates Call of Duty from other first person shooters. I’m going to go over each perk and why you should or shouldn’t use it and also what other perks you should combine with it, not all perks are created equal.

Tier 1 Perk Slot

Lightweight

Lightweight allows you to move more quickly like you would expect it to, and the pro version of it makes it so that you take no fall damage. It is a much more useful perk in competitive play but is outshone by other perks in its category for play on public servers, it is still a decent perk though but not necessary.

Scavenger

Scavenger allows you to replenish ammo and lethals off of dead bodies, the pro version allows you to replenish tactical grenades as well and also makes you start with twice as much ammo. Scavenger is a waste of this slot, it isn’t good enough to be used over the other perks in this category. If you want more ammo you can always use the Dual Magazine attachment for your gun and if you ever run out of ammo you can pick up weapons from people’s dead bodies, if you’ve killed enough people to use all your ammo you have probably found a dropped weapon you are familiar with. Do not use this perk.

Ghost

Irrefutably one of the most powerful perks in the game. Ghost makes you undetectable by UAVs so the enemy only sees your location when you shoot or they have a Blackbird, the pro version makes you undectable to all non Blackbird killstreaks, this includes everything from Sentry Guns to Gunships, it also makes it so that enemies see no color change to their crosshair and don’t see a name when they aim at you. The power from this perk obviously comes from being hidden from UAVs, most people use UAV and it only requires three kills to get meaning there will often be one up. In fact when you have Ghost equipped then the enemy having a UAV actually makes people notice you less and sometimes walk right past you since they don’t see anything on their radar, as long as you don’t stand next to your teammates when you have this perk equipped you can rack up a ton of easy kills, it works best in conjunction with a silenced weapon.
